i really dont like the metallic-ish reverb on aveys voice in every goddamn song

duplex trip is my favorite. i still cant even make out a melody or song-structure for the outlaw or your card. this is a sweet album but your card is such a stupid closer ugh

Forreal? How does this even work. Don't know what ppl mean when they say they can't discern a melody/structure for ac stuff... Some ppl said that with chz, and I know they're often asymmetrical structures or a little different than a verse-chorus-bridge thing but dang, its always still so hooky to me that it always still only takes a few listens to understand the structure/remember the melodies. And Your Card is the best song on here dammit..

There was a positive review in the wire but I'm not gonna bother typing it up. Basically said it was fun.

How bout a copy/paste?

It's probably only in print right now.

I found it online, but you have to have a subscription, so (I'm assuming) if he has a real subscription, he can access the digital version?

I never set up the digital one. I'll type it up now, I have nothing to do atm.

"Animal Collective's Avey Tare has tended to be overshadowed by prolific bandmate Panda Bear, whose solo material has been almost as well received as the group's. It's therefore interesting to note that Tare's new project in collaboration with Angel Deradoorian (ex-Dirty Projectors) and Jeremy Hyman (ex-Ponytail) finds him forging an identity distinct from his fellow Animals.

The casual feel of this debut allows his group Slasher Flicks (who have nothing to do with horror films save from their teasing moniker) to be more easily enjoyed than recent Animal Collective whose material has tended to become bolder and brighter but less permeable as the group's influence has take hold. Speaking of which, it's a revelation to discover that Tare's vocal remains untainted after what seems like hundreds of irritating imitations. At no point do you think he should turn off the fucking reverb - which says much for his uniqueness and little for the legion of dizzy babblers that has sprouted in Animal Collective's wake.

There's a generous sloppy fistful of day-glo power-pop in these songs. The hypermelodic "Duplex Trip" sounds a lot like Ariel Pink collaborator Spooky Ruben (no bad thing at all), while "Blind Babe" is a ragged bounce of a tune which makes much of Tare's irrepressible energy. The almost straightforward "Little Fang" blends a strutting Hall & Oates bassline with vocal repetitions that recall Tom Tom Club's 1981 debut. Not an inappropriate reference point - Talking Heads' Tina Weymouth and Chris Franz's side project demonstrates precisely what can happen when the weight of importance is permitted to slip from the shoulders of innovators. In a word, fun."

Absolutely. However, I don't know what he means about tons of Avey imitators out there, if anything Noah is the most imitated. And also the album is full of horror themes and such, it doesn't just stop at the name. Despite AC (and side projects) getting such critical praise, I'm starting to wonder if critics even listen to their records more than twice.

great to get the 320 version of this today. despite uninformed people's comments, it sounds obviously better than the freebird. glad i held off on listening after the initial listen before.

No one was saying that it sounded like a perfect freebird. We were just saying that it didn't sound as bad as everyone made it out to be. I'm also glad that the good quality version freebirded finally. Time to listen to Roses.

People were reviewing it and talking about production subtleties. It was embarrassing.

Does anyone else wish that he would do something in the vein of the snippets he released for Centipede Radio? Those were more colorful, albeit very close to what Panda is doing I feel. This album is more black and white feeling (with the exception of Strange Colores lol). That's not a put-down; I think this album does exactly what it wants extraordinarily well. I just would like to see a different direction from murky and dark.

Modern Days E is my favorite track. It feels so emotional for me. Catchy is Contagious and A Sender are tied for second, but I really like all the songs. They're just a little too tied to a pop format as others have been saying for a little while.

Almost done with my first listen. It's so beautiful outside and it fits the mood I've been in today. I love all the vibes on this record. :smoking: :weed: I can't wait to listen with headphones and pick out some "hidden" sounds / hear more of the details. :eng101:

I was kind of obsessed over the live boots from last year and these are great evolutions/versions of those sounds.

Also can't wait to get the vinyl and see them in Columbus! Going to have great avey vibes all month long!

My opinion:

Duplex Trip-Your Card-That It Wont Grow (Ok)
Little Fang-Strange Colores-Blind Babe (Great)
Modern Days-Catchy-Roses-Outlaw (Even Better)
A Sender (Maybe my song of 2014)

Im So Happy Right Now :)
