Hey, I thought it would be cool to get a new equipment thread up again being that I think we lost the old one.
My main question is does anyone know what Avey was using on his solo tour?

I'd be curious to know what Panda is using on his new stuff.

probably a bunch of samplers. new stuff doesn't sound like it's too synth heavy like tomboy.
for his songs with harmonies, is noah playing a back track or is there a pedal/harmonizer vst doing that?

yo he def wouldnt be usin a backin track i dont think. i kno he def in the past triggered his harmonies (bros) live with his sp 303 pre 2007 and his sp 555 post 2007. i suspect he's spinning looped discs more n more these days bcos of that big box with four xlr's and the plastic cd cover lookin thing.

Does anyone know exactly what gear Panda Bear was using during his Person Pitch shows? Was it just two SP-555's or was there more?

Person Pitch was two 303's. When he played with AC he used two 555's.

Whoa I always thought it was two 404's on PP.

The 404 came out 2005. I'm not sure when Noah started working with samples, but the Homebase EP came out in 2004, so that eliminates the 404 all together for writing the PP songs. Not to mention the artwork for PP has 303's. And yeah, Dilla and Madlib and a lot of the Stones Throw dudes use them religiously.
As for the sound of the 303, both the 303 and 404 are built on the same engine. Any perceived discrepancies between the two are most likely due to another piece of gear or are imagined. You could also be hearing the effects on the 303 since the Boss version used a different algorithm for some of the effects.
Aside from general curiosity, if you're planning on making music with samplers, there is no difference between the 303 and 404, other than the 404 is portable, has more pads and is easier to store audio on (the newer 404SX uses SD cards). If you really want something with a 'sound', try a MPC 3000 / MPC 60 or a SP-1200.

i think sp 303's sound different and p bear said that as well so idk maybe it is my imagination but the 404 sounds brighter to me

I've never heard the difference - not that my ears are the Old Testament or anything. But I do tend to err on the side caution before I label audio equipment one way or the other. It'd be interesting to do a blind listening of both samplers, or really of all samplers.
I've come to think that many people like to believe something sounds good just because they hold a dogma based off of the cultural ideology for what the item represents (i.e. FLAC files and cassettes/vinyl records). Not that there aren't real differences in sound quality between various equipment, but one has to weigh in the coloring and distortion added by mixers, pre-amps, compressors, DA/AD convertors, software, and speakers. Frankly, I don't believe so many people in the world have such vast and deep knowledge to speak with certainty as to categorize what they hear. I can testify personally that I do not.
Anyway. Animal Collective. With all the growing complexity of AC's music, and consequently gear, I can't help but say I fiend for more simplicity. Simplicity and slowness. Dave & Angel's improv show is a step down my favorite road.

BTW in slasher flicks Angel is playing a Juno 60 and a Voyager and she has some kind of multi-fx pedal
The only pedals I can pick out from dave's board are the Pigtronix Mothership that Jen mentioned and the purple pedal off to the side.

I can also make out a mxr distortion +, crazy horse distortion, Arion flanger, Apollo phaser, memory man, and boss delay. There is 1 more that I can't figure out

Dave needs one of these bad boys:
Also, how did a collaboration with Grouper never happen when they toured with her in 2009? "Bleed" would have made for an excellent Grouper remix.

haha I did some hardcore studying of that photo since saida initially posted it months ago. I only figured out the Apollo phaser yesterday after an intense google image search of analog phasers.

That was after Merriweather. Could have been used on FBK though.
There's also a Novation Bass Station and a Fender Rhodes on MPP.

it's hard to say for sure because there are so many different makes and models but i always picked avey's strat as a 50's reissue (maybe '56 or '57). they have the same maple neck and vintage style tuning pegs as avey's and are made in the same colour (seafoam green).

when they recorded mpp and chz panda still used 303's becuase of his preference to them over ze sp555. i cant find ze interview but he says they still used ze 303 on chz and its their 'secret weapon' cause he thinks everything sounds better out of it. and from ze photo of the studio for mpp u can see his two 303's. sorry all the information i have is basically about the 303. cant not love it

Anyone know what Avey used for Spirit? Also, did he actually go record at a studio or did he do a home recording?

That sounds about right. Maybe the symbol on the front is a clue but probably not.
