We’ve gotta trudge through two more months of waiting until Isn’t it Now? is released. Last time as we not so patiently waited for Time Skiffs, Foxtrot gave us an incredible listening schedule through the band’s entire discography to pass the time. Perhaps we’ll do that again this time around, but I’ve got another little game that will help us pass the time.

Background:

It’s 2024, and all four band members have tragically died at the hands of the Paw Patrol, who initiated a war with the band after they lost the sales & critical praise battle of September 29, 2023 -- hurt dog egos and all that. An estranged family member of Deakin’s whose only mention in the will was a cut of posthumous album sales had been sitting on some massive dirt on Domino Records and blackmailed them with this proposition: though against the band’s ethos and against their wishes, he demanded Domino release a “Greatest Hits” album or else he would spill their tea, surely ending Domino’s famed run as indie music’s favorite turtle-paced album-rollout record label.

Domino reluctantly agrees. The de facto greatest hits album will be called Simmer Limber Hits, and will be a limited edition 2xLP that has the below image as the cover in embossed gold (think Watch the Throne) and each copy will be sold for $1,000.

Image

Rules:

– The album can be no longer than 88 minutes. (4 sides x 22 minutes)
– No more than 3 songs per album can be used in the compilation.
– Unreleased songs such as “Sponge Luke” ARE valid for this compilation, as completed studio versions of these songs were found on Geologist’s hard drive, however unreleased fake songs such as “Cherry Berry” are not.

The weird/amazing thing is that AC are so good that I look at Stan’s and still think “yeh that’s a fun listen”

Yep I gotta say, Wish I Knew You is the only proper stinker from that tracklist imo. Otherwise, all flubs no duds!

The best I can do with these restraints

A
My girls
Applesauce
The purple bottle
Floridada

B
Chocolate Girl
Who Could Win a Rabbit
Essplode
Slippi
Prospect Hummer

C
Prester John
For Reverend Green
Fireworks
Tantrum Barb

D
Water curses
Man of Oil
What Would I Want? Sky
Brothersport

These are not all my favorites but (mostly) what I think would constitute a collection of their most popular tracks from most of their releases. Side A and C are crunching it in there a little but the band is dead and getting a greatest hits album so we’re not going to honor their wishes about quality. Tried to represent most major releases but timing was a little tight so no Campfire Songs and Tantrum Barb instead of Screens (which would have been ideal but too long). Why Man of Oil and not Doggy? Tik Tok.

I interpreted "3 max from any album" as 3 max from any era. I would do honorable mentions but it doesn't seem in the spirit of this and they'd be real easy to guess. Actually listened to this and think it makes a good set of songs

1. What Would I Want? Sky
2. Honeycomb
3. Strung with Everything
4. Who could win a Rabbit?
5. Turn into Something
6. Chores
7. Daily Routine
8. Royal & Desire
9. Grass
10. Slippi
11. Winter's Love
12. For Reverend Green
13. Fireworks
14. Brothersport
15. Golden Girl
16. Purple Bottle

Gonna sort of ignore the 'greatest hits' aspect of this.

Hair Cutter
Street Flash
I See You Pan
Bat You'll Fly
Peacemaker
Also Frightened
Banshee Beat
Sweet Road
Loch Raven
Cuckoo Cuckoo
Kindle Song
I Think I Can
Crimson
Mouth Wooed Her
I Remember Learning How to Dive
Two Sails on a Sound
College

Roughly 88 minutes. Was a minute off on first go so tacked on College

Yeah I’d rather listen to this than the one I made but LOL @ imagining Crimson or Mouth Wooed Her on a hypothetical “Greatest Hits” album

Too difficult to do an actual favourites comp that sticks to 88 mins but here's a legit submission:

Banshee Beats: Best Behemoths

A1. Defeat

B1. Two Sails on a Sound
B2. De Soto De Son

C1. Safer
C2. Visiting Friends

D1. Banshee Beat
D2. Alvin Row

We all know that if there was an actual greatest hits though it would 75% of MPP plus Peacebone, Fireworks, Today's Supernatural, Golden Gal and Prester John.

I like this one. reminds me of getting into the band- one of the first things I understood about their discography was that most of their albums have some massive slow burn-centrepiece. [s]Maybe the first time I discovered cathartic music could be slow[/s] thats a bit bs actually but certainly got me listening way deeper than I ever had been prior

Tough exercise. This track listing doesn't split evenly into 4 sides of 22 min or less, but I think it'd work well on CD. I'd go with the big crowd pleasers and songs that I felt embody their "sound." I stuck mostly to their poppier stuff as it's a "hits" record:

Soul Capturer (single edit)
Cherokee
Fireworks
The Purple Bottle
Who Could Win A Rabbit
Peacebone
Summertime Clothes
What Would I Want? Sky
FloriDada
My Girls
Today's Supernatural
Prester John
Banshee Beat
Applesauce
Kinda Bonkers
We Tigers

I think this is really the most likely of the bunch, maybe with Kinda Bonkers swapped out for bro sport

Thanks!

If I could add one song to fit with this set it'd be Brother Sport, but I'd put it as the first track. I like Kinda Bonkers for its "Unity of all kind" lyrics, which I think is a nice sentiment/vibe they try to put out there with their music

ETA: I feel bad not putting a Deakin song on here, could absolutely be convinced to replace Applesauce with Wide Eyed (although I prefer Royal). Final list edited into the quote.
