My favourite Christmas carol and perhaps my favourite piece of music of all time. The lyric reduces me to tears.

"What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give him: Give my heart."

I've been agnostic my whole life but that calls me like little else. The voice of God, the universe, a reason for being. It's alongside Raphael and Michaelangelo and the I Ching and Chuang Tzu as heaven on Earth. Man channeling something divine but essential to mankind.

I recommend the King's College, Cambridge version:

https://youtu.be/U0aL9rKJPr4

I mean, I literally can't believe this. A few weeks ago, I stood in the snow on Christmas Day outside my house, it's been a very hard year in many ways but everyone is healthy and happy now and I've always got my wife with me which I'm grateful for. Anyway, she was watching some Christmas telly, just chilling out after a lovely day with the family and I stood in the garden having a smoke, listening to this on headphones, snow falling, looking up at the skies, crying my eyes out. I really needed it. I'd held it in for months. Went back in, cracked open a bottle of champagne and watched Home Alone, laughing together all night, but it'll be a long time before I forget the catharsis of that bloody good cry. This music is almost more resonant to me now than it has ever been. I can't fucking believe Animal Collective recorded this.

Man, what a special story. It's a rare treasure when music and life sync up that well. Thanks for sharing.

this is my presumption, when he says campfire songs recording session he means the band. I think this has nothing to do with the songs recorded in 2001

also very nice post stan, heartwarming

Is the synth sound at the end part of the song or is cross-faded from whatever was next on the o'brien system?

It’s cross-faded with the next song he played. There’s overlap so I attenuated it to seem quasi natural.

This plays nearly every day in December at my work and it upsets me so much:

i had a dream that i suppose was inspired by the campfire songs - in the bleak midwinter discussions in the other thread, in the dream i somehow made a breakthrough discovery that in 1999 AC released an album under a pseudonym/different name that went under the radar, the band/self-titled album was called INVENTIONS and every single track name was one word long and they all began with the letter "I" like the title lol thought that was pretty funny, album cover was bright orange with a bunch of silver mechanical indiscernible invention-like thingies on it

Not yet but I did once loop the clicking and pitch it to 130 BPM when I was DJing in China and played some Studio 1 dub techno over it. It just gave it a bit of fidgety life. I know this reads like a joke of some sorts but it's not funny and is just a boring thing that happened when I was DJing. I used to put lots of AC sounds in and loop them purely for my entertainment and to feel like an artist when I was just pressing play and stop.

That astroseismology thing looks like a cool INVENTION

What's seismological about it though? I don't get that part

yeah there doesn't seem to be anything seismological about it, at least not from that description. maybe it's just that he's 'geologist' lol
