I had listened to this only from beginning to end the first several times I heard it. then over the past week i have been listening to random songs from it. after a weeklong break from listening to the full thing from beginning to end, I listened to tho whole thing again while running yesterday. It's easy to overlook how well paced and sequenced this album is due to it's length, but fuck, this album is perfectly put together. Can't believe how great it is!

Make a bath, get real high, put some essential oils in (eucalyptus duh), light candles, put on the album, and enjoy the ecstasy.

hadnt thought of the bath experience with eulacyptus - that actually sounds like an ideal listening experience for this music!

i've listened to this in the bath too (though sans eucalyptus). agreed that it's a perfect listening environment!

I've been wanting to post this for a while
The freakiest film where nothing happens, the silence, the heat, wafting eucalypts and the buzzing cicadas....
Disappear into the portal of timelessness, sync it to the album and you're in for a treat
There's something to the slow unfolding aesthetic that matches this album, it was filmed apparently using unusual methods, lace over the lenses that refracted the light, kaleidiscopic with a soft focus.... magical

Guys, I'm at a loss on this one. I've listened to it countless times. Many different environments. It's just awful as a whole.I feel horrible saying that.
I can see some moments of beauty in the first half, but they aren't sustained or elaborated on enough for me to be wowed, at least at the beginning.
The first 8 songs admittedly have their moments, but they're few and far between. I know Avey's a little more into the freefrom (hyuck), but I just can't find myself willfully listening to these songs.
The latter half of the album is great. I want to stress that. I liked that In Pieces has a synth patch that I'm pretty sure was used in Oddsac (Lady On The Lake?). The song is fantastic. Maybe I'm just a pleb that needs a kick drum and good lyrics. Coral Lords is beautiful. As is Sports in July, When You Left Me is a solid closer. These songs just speak to me in a way the first half of the album can't. I get the whole Eucalyptus blooming thing... I respect that. But maybe I just don't have the patience for this piece as a whole. I feel the album could've been slimmed down greatly.
For the record, I loved all of Down There, loved Slasher Flicks, still regularly jam Crumbling Land, and love what he writes with the band. I'm just torn on this one. I think some of it is great.

Album is a flipping masterpiece. Actually frightens me it might not have gotten released. What other treasures have the guys held back on, for real

So you think the lyrics on In Pieces aren't good? Or did you think that's what I was saying?

This album is so gorgeous. Really love the quiet jazzy undertones that snuck into Selection of a Place and Coral Lords--the horns especially in CL are exceptional. Does anyone else kinda get some The Books vibe from the way Avey is using samples and production on this album? Also, wanted to put out there that the monologue at the start of CL may be the climax of the album to me, like some serious music is about to go down.
God, and Melody Unfair maybe my favorite murky Avey tune to date. Love the way the soundscape gets slowly introduced until that train whistle sound, which sort of signals Angel's vocals to come in.
Much more I could say, but I think I'll end by puttit it out there that Season High, In Pieces, Selection Of A Place, Boat Race, and Sports in July are some of the most interesting Avey songs I've ever heard. Really love this expressive voice he uses on this album.

I mean, I get what dude is saying. I like the album a lot but every few listens, I'll let myself wonder if this album had more bold walls built around the project? I think, for me, personally, a more Panda Bear-ish assembly with tight production and more shall we say structure could have made the lyrics, which are for sure the star of the show, more of the main event.
That being said, when I'm down for the full EU experience, its immensely rewarding. I just wish I didn't feel like I had to do all four sides of the LP to enjoy it...

It blows my mind that Boat Race was written in a stream of consciousness. So genius
