loving this thread and hearing your guys thoughts.. especially after what seems like a lot of negative reviews and such all over the internet.. the person who mentioned he heard the "i hear it doubly clear" in the bathroom airport audio and how we could now all hear it doubly clear was such a sweet comment.
lots of interesting things to pay attention to after reading your guys thoughts. Its day 3 of me listening to Painting With and its really starting to grow on me even more.. I have to say its easily a contender for top 3 albums by the boys for me.

The Burglars: the lurching synth that starts in the "when I was young" part
On Delay: The high note in the harmony in the first "it happened twiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice"

Theres a lot but im just gonna say the ones i havnt heard anyone else mention. The "Mmmmm" at 1:52 on recycling. How the 2nd "chorus" in on delay is cut in half and replaced with "so turned on by the delay". That first noisey section in summing the wretch at 0:56 and how that part ends sounding like a spinning top.

^all good ones! especially the 2nd On Delay verse at the end when panda starts it by singing "on delay," and there is a little delay on his voice i think... love panda's voice singing "on delay"

And how recycling starts with a disphoric madness then ends with a similar sound but more of a uphoric madness.

1." So turned on by the Delay", Panda Harmonizes with himself.
2.Spilling Guts back round.
3.Intro to "Bagels"
4." These days im not to sure who was getting along,
or if they were before, I wasn't there when moses
parted the sea" Awesome line
5.Dave in "Burglars"
6. Chorus drops in "Lying in the Grass"
7."You think the gals should feel so comfortable these days
But sexy genders bring some troubles to the fray" Golden Gals
8."I hear it doubly clear" the delay effect, not the lyrics.
9.Opening Synth Patch in 'Natural selection'
10."What you think you own you don’t watch out the burglars"- Burglars. Perfect way to drop out of that song.
Best sample work is on Spilling Guts in my opinion(has most entertaining background noises.).
*SPOILERS IN FOLLOWING TEXT*
I was in Philly for the first show to kick off the Painting With Tour.I must say after seeing the album preformed live I have a much different scope on the substance from the album. A.C. always has a very dimensional, outer-being style of presentation (which upon first listen to P.W i had felt they got away from), hearing the intricate transitions from song to song really gave character to the samples and synth patches that were rather dull upon first listen. This album is much more animated and life like each time I listen too it.
Also A.C. just puts on one FUCK HELL OF A SHOW, they were dropping into old song from new songs back to back. (They played Hocus Pocus into Loch Raven,Burglars into Bees). Also!!!! they played Daily Routine and Panda dropped the ORIGINAL SAMPLE from the original version!!Breath Taking.

^Hey you should put spoiler tags when talking about the new live shows and setlists, just for the consideration of those who haven't seen them live on this tour yet and want to go in fresh without setlist spoilers. no biggie since I know you probably didn't know, just fyi

I'm peeking out of the shelter of the Live Forum to chime in on this post because it has been my fave to read (lurk on). A blast to see all the nuances of the album that ya'll have enjoyed, too.
I think the first one has to be the last section of "Burglars" - like many have already said. Noah's vocals soaring behind the closing notes really do it for me. Every time that song ends, I just have to say, "Nom Nom Nom." It's just that tasty. And then I play it again. And again.
Beyond that, I keep finding myself singing, "Bagles for everyone, that's the kind of thing he would have wanted..." Something about the phrasing of that line. Bagles isn't my favorite on the album but that line is just perfectly delivered.
I love how Avey's lyrics are so intent on telling a story (almost said painting a picture. hmm), like in Bagels or On Delay, where Panda continues to write little mysterious lyrical puzzles with such a heavy emphasis on word play.
How many times have I tried to visualize a "people patch" in the past week? That might be my favorite.
In Vertical, I love the line about creatures making their homes in leaves. "Lifted above the din, their world's a peaceful dome." I want to live in a little, peaceful, leafy dome. Yes, thanks.
Sonically, I still can't get enough of the vocoder at the beginning of LITG. Is he saying "eat that lava?" Probably not. But I will continue to say it that way, anyway. Because... well, lava.
Same with Avey at the beginning of Vertical. Sounds like some sort of Tilt-A-Wirl from the Twilight Zone in the best possible way.
Most of all, I love that I can listen to this album 1,000 times and hear something new each time. A layer, a nugget of synth, a well-placed squelch or vocoder loop... I wonder if I'll ever internalize it all.
I wish that all the reviewers who gave PW anything less than a decent review could at least strap on a pair ... of good headphones that is.... and listen multiple times.
It's like reading a follow-up novel from a favorite author. Yep, you can speed read it to see what plot develops (and then complain it was weak), but then you have to read it again and again to dissect the words, tune into the nuances, and appreciate the craft.
That's PW to me.
/first real post.
whew.

Haha really good post MimsyBorogove.. oddly im trying to stay away from the Live Forum.. seeing them in may at the 9:30 club and I want to go in not knowing or expecting anything.
The bagels for everyone line is just perfect isn't it?... its sooo ANCO specific in its cuteness and uniqueness.. melodically and lyrically... not a lot of musicians could pull that lyric off without sounding silly and awkward.
This album has been killing me and still growing on me and getting better. Im starting to see how much depth it has.. imo people have been wrong about saying its simple, fast, and just happy. It feels quite complex to me.. the endless sounds, the vocal layers, the lyrics... also its not as happy sounding as reviewers and people were saying.. i feel a sadness in it through out the whole record.
Hocus Pocus and Vertical has been my recent favorite the last few days.
In Hocus Pocus that super distorted synth thats lurking throughout the song but really starts going all out around 1:17 is amazing.
In Vertical how the opening verses start simple then slowly layer on top of each other is just so good.. into a solo avey.. "So high it still sends a feeling through me".
im in love

In order
1. the cool as vocals at the beginning of Vertical and Avey's voice when they get turned off. Fuck that song is so fresh and awesome.
2. The climax of The Burglars with Panda's insane vocals. Also the drums throughout that song are seriously cool and I wish they were more prominent.
3. The entirety of Bagels through Golden Gal. Absolutely nuts stretch of songs.

I don't like the beginning to golden gal, I feel like aveys was trying to hard to sing low but I love everything else about that song, some of the vocal tricks get annoying but I do love the chaos of the whole album.
I especially loved the hidden track. A +20 minute DJ song? Hell yes. It reminded me of the DJ sets they were doing last year. I felt like I could tell when they traded off the song, like the ending 7 minutes were pure Geologist
