Can't say I'm surprised by the reviews it's been getting given I said early on the singles were pretty weak. Having listened to the full album, I have to say this the weakest album in the discography. Many of the songs just fail to involve the same emotions I felt listening to offerings like SJ, Feels, MPV, and even CHZ to a certain extent. Being a Cubs fan I'll hold the same optimism for AC. Maybe next LP

i don't think it's supposed to involve those same emotions, it's supposed to be different. not saying you aren't allowed to not like it, just saying that they went in a diff direction for a reason

POWER RANKINGS:
Spoiler: show
Avey:
1. On Delay
2. The Burglars
3. Vertical
4. Bagels in Kiev
5. Golden Gal
6. Floridada

Panda:
1. Recycling
2. Lying in the Grass
3. Spilling Guts
4. Natural Selection
5. Hocus Pocus
6. Summing the Wretch
those pb tracks are really hard to pick favourites! also as you can see I think it'll be a while before I can hear the album just as "animal collective songs" rather than "at/pb/at/pb/at/pb/at/at/pb/pb/at/pb"

^ya i have trouble trying to compare panda's songs with avey's. their styles here are so distinct.

but my ranking of avey songs is the exact same as yours..for panda its like i like spilling guts the most, then NS, then everything else is pretty much tied.

the new panda-y song they played last night seemed like it was gonna be reeeeally sweet and a bit different than his album cuts possibly.

just had such a wonderful experience listening to this album. golden gal + recycling gave me so much joy and hope and all around good feelings.

and these experiences i have are 10000x more important than what some person I've never met and probably never will meet that lives a thousand miles away thinks about this record. to people who love this album (and any other album, movie, piece of art, etc.) i'd say maybe try to stay away from other people's negative opinions on that piece of art. i understand the feeling that discussion (positive and negative) surrounding art feels necessary... that's part of the culture we live in and always have lived in (but now it's way more intense with the internet) but reading people's negativity towards something seems to have an effect on our own experience. no matter how hard we try to avoid that effect it definitely seems to. so if you're loving this album go have amazing experiences with it and make them your own because that's where those special exciting moments in life come from. and maybe stay away from other people's opinions as much as possible ??

and to those who don't enjoy the album i definitely understand the need to vent and discuss and pick apart why you don't like it. (especially when its a band you love and are maybe disappointed by their new album) and you have every right to do so. but as someone whose been reading/posting my opinions on message boards for the past 10 years or so it just feels so much better to just be like okay this album or movie or whatever just isn't vibing with me, i don't like it, it isn't FOR me. but there are definitely people out there who love and enjoy the shit out of this and there is literally no point for me to try and take away from their experience. because like it or not in some way shape or form my negativity IS diminishing someone else's experience even if its in the slightest way. so id choose to just move on to something i do like and have good experiences with those. because there is just way too much negativity out there and the only way to avoid it is to focus on the things in life that YOU love and enjoy and ignore the things that YOU don't like because they're not for YOU.

i realize I'm not saying anything new and that these things are repeated everyday on the internet but i guess i felt like i just needed to get that out

tl;dr have beautiful moments with the art you love don't worry about what other people think, move on to something you do love if you don't love this particular piece of art :metal :metal :metal

had n impulsive all night road trip by myself (10:30pm->5am) the other night and listened to Danse, sung tongs, strawberry jam, MPP, and finished with PW. after PW I pulled off the road cz there weren't any towns around so you could see the stars real nice. sat on the roof of my car looking up for a bit... Painting With is defs my favorite animal collective release right now. they went for so much and fucking pulled it off... and yet there is a sense of restraint throughout the whole thing that is really admirable and refreshing. like how is bagels in kiev even a full song??? but it is. oh how it is...

i really feel like this album makes a lot of sense in the discography and where the bands been heading and IMHO the feels and moves on this album are really something else. I highly recommend anyone who is interested to do a back to back of MPP and PW. not trying to short cHz but that thing is like eating a 10 course meal and don't think i could go to another animal collective album after that (i really really love cHz tho).

The album is pretty amazing once you get past the first song imo.

Lying in the grass, the saxxxx, and the beat of vertical. I love how they blend some of that low end electronic bits, jazzy sounds, and weird effected vocals and samples. Their melodies rock in this album.

Ive already had quite a ride with this album. The initial single I enjoyed a lot and it made me excited for the release, yet I never felt any deeper or more emotional connection to the track throughout repeated listens. I heard the Amazon samples and was captivated. I revisited these pretty often and fell in love with the sound. Then, LITG left me feeling dissapointed and a bit confused, mainly because while the track was a blast, again, I wasn't "feeling" the song so much as just listening and enjoying the musicalites of it. Fast forward to the freebird. I get my hands on it. A bit drunken and mega stoned. I'm listening.... Enjoying it.... A lot of it was what was expected from what I had heard prior.... Then by natural selection I start feeling uncomfortable, irritable, head is spinning, I'm overwhelmed and in that moment I think the vocals of the album are about to give me a medium sized anxiety attack. I throw off the headphones and stand up real quick and shciztoid like. Okay I'm thinking calllllm down. It's animal collective, we love animal collective... Okay deep breath and sit back down to try again. Wait another quick hit of the bowl may help...

I start listening again and again, while in moments the Beauty of it all shone through, and I knew I would love songs like Vertical and On Delay, I was left feeling confused. I couldn't grasp at any of the songs. It seemed impossible to be moved by thesE electronic sounds bubbles. Sleep it off, listen again tomorrow...

The next couple days..... Repeated listening attempts and frustration. "The animal collective magic cant be found here"... a sign my brain put up in front of the album. i wasn't really enjoying it. I wasn't Feeling it. I wasn't having the buzzing emotional reactions I have when listening to DYSTW. While falling in love. Or while listening to the Purple Bottle. While being in love. Or while listening to Amanita on a car ride heading towards a month in the wilderness.

Silly me. In hindsight, what I was essentially doing was just throwing on the new album any opportunity i had (got stoned lots too to try and "help") and expected it to move me in a deeply personal and felt way. I was trying to be in love with a stranger. It's possible to do, sure, but it doesn't happen often. And with an album as packed as this, it's only made harder.

the unskillfill act was to expect the same reactions from a new set of songs that I experience through music that I've been marinating with for years. It's like trying to find the same depth in a relationship of 5 days and a love fest of 5 years.

I eventually realized what I was doing in trying to obsessively squeeze out a meaningful experience with this album and let it take the back burner. I figured it might take months or longer for this one to click. It happened with CHz!

Life changes. Moving across the country. Transition period. A great day climbing an amazing route on some amazing rock in an amazing place with an amazing life long friends. A long car ride back to the city. I throw on painting with. Windows down and a crazy wind and a strong sun and a 70 degree day in February. Instantly, I'm sucked in to the place I've been trying way too hard to get too. The music surrounds me and I feel as though I'm floating in it. Soaking in it. "It" being the song but the substance of it being the Emotional spectrum associated. This is a familiar experience, yet one I've only experienced with the music of animal collective. It totally consumes me and i am excitedly along for the ride. The lyrics conjure images. themes and ideas effect me, reflecting my own life back at me. On Delay and Golden Girl bring smiles as well as tears to my eyes.

I'm not so sure how to comment on these songs as an album. They way I've been listening to it, which is typical of how I listen to all animal collectove albums, is more often as individual songs or a non-album-order listening of tracks.
But I do know many of the tracks already stand out and speak to me, and if the moment is right, allow me to wade in the waters of its substance and "feel" rather than listen. Since initially clicking with the album, I've already developed strong relationships with many of the songs, and any time I listen any of the songs, am left with sense of stronger, more personal, more magic buzzing heart burst moments to come in the future. It just takes the right moments for the songs to reveal themselves to you in such a way.

For these already deeply felt experiences, and the endless possibilities of connections to be made with this album still to come, I am excited and tremendously grateful. i already know that someday this will be an album that I will look back on with fondness and nostalgia and Memories of many moments spent in the unique places these songs create when used to accompany the moments of this mind blowing life . The magic is real and it is here.

I will add that reading the lyrics while listening made a huge difference for me

I also wanted to ask where a nice place to discuss the themes and ideas or "meanings" behind the songs may be? I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on songs like On Delay.

Sorry if this post is a bore or a bad because I'm a bad it writing and typing

I love you all and this awesome place designed to celebrate and awesome band

New interview Avey talking about the magic http://www.people.com/article/animal-co ... _peoplemag

I think people are criticizing it a lot for missing the magic or themes that are in some of our older records. In terms of the magic and our enthusiasm, I can assure everyone that it's still there, though I understand the music that is presented is a bit different. At this point in our lives though, we are pretty different people from the guys who made Feels ten years ago. I can't imagine why anyone would expect us to keep playing with the same themes and sounds. As a musician or artist, that seems so boring to me.

Patiently waiting for this to click. After obsessing over FloriDada for months, my first listen was late Thursday night. After 3 complete listens (24-bit, vinyl, car) and some random song one-offs, I still really can't get into it. I know I'm too quick to judge after 3 listens but I don't have a lot of desire to return to it. When I try to revisit any of the songs individually, they rub me the wrong way.

For me, its the first AC release that doesn't possess a distinct, original sound of its own (which i know is absurd to say). Up until now, nothing else has sounded like my favorite band. But with this, all I hear is AC doing Dan Deacon, PBVSGR, Flying Lotus, Vampire Weekend, etc. Most of the songs sound too similar to one another to remain interesting. The album clearly has its feet planted firmly on the ground, while everything else these guys have made seems to levitate.

I commend them for trying something different and taking a left turn. I know the shows will be legendary. I understand the problem is with me and I will eventually come around to it. I just want that to happen sooner rather than later. But for now, I'm bumming.

I have listened to this on repeat too for days.... a truly creative album, and Panda's lyrics are next level, the guys an elusive genius. Every review has loved it and gone on the journey with them, except P4 and TND, they're suckers with no originality......

Sorry I don't ascribe to the belief that we shouldn't voice our opinion if it's negative because it could take from others experience. As much as we like echo chambers, interesting discussion tends to favor disagreement. That being said, the only tracks on the Lp that have stuck with me are Hocus Pocus, Vertical, Lying in the Grass, and On Delay. Everything else fails to captivate me or enjoy. I think it might have to do with the songs I do like draw elements from older AC work I'm fond of.
