AT: A lot of new material. Since we haven’t ever played it live it’s what we’re most excited about. Also some old favorites, surprises and things we may be tinkering around with.
The last bit means new stuff though, which is exciting

OK so The Burglars lyrics are insane obviously.
And Panda's bit at the end is doubly cooler now. I thought he was just singing "1.. 2.. 3.. ah-ooo, uh-oooh-ooohh-oohhh, uh-uhhh-uhhh-uhhh" but he's actually singing, "What you think you oooooown, you doo-oo-oo-oon't, buuurr-uuurr-glars". Or at least that's why I infer from the lyrics Avey gave. Radical.

yes! got mine yesterday
the official lyrics are a real game changer. Just listened to some of my favorite tracks with lyrics. Damn. Gonna hold off on looking at the rest for awhile. I'm still digesting this baby. Half the fun with new AC is coming up with your own interpretations of the lyrics. I needed to know the words to golden gal and natural selection though. Oh and is it just me or is On Delay one of the best songs ever?

After a couple listens, I've gotta say that I'm really enjoying this album. There are even a couple songs and moments that stand out to me as some of my favorite AC moments already. I wasn't too keen on CHz, so I'm really glad to be digging PW as much as I am.
Highlights for me are Bagels in Kiev, On Delay, Summing the Wretch, and Golden Gal. This albums a grower, for sure. The 2nd half of the album stands out to me more than the 1st right now.
The P4k review really was terrible... He hardly even touched upon the album's actual content. But I have much respect for how Dave took it in stride.
What I'm most interested in is the equipment used in these recordings. I know there has been a lot of talk about modular equipment, and I started geeking out when I saw the pics of AC at Make Noise headquarters. They make some of my favorite instruments, and I'm curious how Make Noise and modular equipment in general played a part in this album. I feel like I hear use of the Make Noise DPO in many of these tracks.
I feel as if PW combines the best elements of pop music and experimental sounds. The tone of these album is very clean, and for me personally, the lyrics are more distinguishable on PW than most other AC albums. It's really easy to hear everything clearly in the mix, and I find the subtle nuances enjoyable rather than distracting. It kind of gives me an ASMR sort of vibe. Little brain massages. The melodies and chord structures remind me a lot of older psych pop. I also love the zither/harp-like instrumentation. Almost like Strawberry Alarm Clock meets the Ramones at a synth expo with this album, for me. lol idk

I've been getting excited to get off work lately just so I can listen to this album more. That's a very good sign. This is easily my favorite release from them since mpp, solo included. Recycling is one of the coolest songs I've heard in a loooong time.

Man... This thing is really such a complete portrait with lyrics. It hit me really hard listening and reading along. Fucking phenomenal; this band never ceases to amaze me with their creativity.

I've heard it several times nice and am thrilled! PW has an essence, a spirit, that reveals itself more with each listen. And Fuck!, the sequencing suites I'm hearing (FloriDada--Lying : Burglars--Natural : Bagels--Recycling) are soooo sweet. I can almost eat some of these sounds.
(That p4k review borders on self-parody btw: Whether you enjoy PW or not, that's one of the biggest pieces of supra-critical nonsense-garbage that my eyes have been unlucky enough to see. Not that we need to go on about some dude's [abysmally conceptual complaint about the supreme ideal of the idea of Animal Collective that has been grossly violated with their last two LPs] subjective [probably one-time] hearing of this album).

So on Instagram Abby posted a picture of Dave and Jeremy and it says something about production rehearsal and the photo is tagged with a Washington DC location. The photo is slightly manipulated but it appears to be at the Lincoln Theater in DC right down the street from 930 club. big stage and no shows scheduled for tonight. Seems reasonable they'd be there running through shit. Someone should try and scope it out. Possible animal sightings.

It seems like they used very little equipment, or just got creative with mostly analog equipment. Avey told me that there are "little to no plug ins, the pitching on the vocals are done with my tape machine"
I'd be curious to learn more. Remember that big article on the gear behind MPP? that shit was great

The part in On Delay after the piano section where the beginning synths return, and Avey and Panda sing the chorus but their voices are super tremolo'd and chopped up

This album has completely grown on me, and is rising as a favorite of all time. It's challenging, a puzzle, and bewildering. It's SOOOO new and original and listening to it at first was so surreal. But every song has just infected me like a fungus. All I wanna do is listen to it over and over. I can barely think about anything else.

Hey guys, I had a crazy AnCo related coincidence recently.
So, my band has just finished our first debut album. We finished production on it back in December, and I decided to set the release date on February 19th to coincide with Painting With.
One of our most personal songs is called Vanilla Coke (Note the food/beverage related title). Despite the lighthearted title, it details how our vocalist misses his grandfather and reflects on how he used to envision his future would be. He had hopes of his grandpa showing him how to drive a car or getting to see him perform music one day, but these were all dashed to the wind with his passing.
Imagine my surprise listening to Bagels in Kiev (food related and lighthearted again...) for the first time and hearing Avey sing, "Grandpop we had sweet days on the beach in Ventnor I remember. Wish we could walk along and you could watch the waves and talk the current Septembers."
It was just the coolest coincidence for me, especially with setting up our album to release on the same day as theirs. Hope some of you enjoyed hearing about that.

tbh not sure what people are finding in recycling... it's kind of boring to me...
just another track with hocketing vocals
edit: as i said in the thread about summing the wretch, sometimes the hocketing really works. others, like in hocus pocus or recycling, i just feel like it would have been fine without. Imagine the impact of the hocketing tracks if theres only like... 2 of them

took me a while to get into recycling. that was prbly the only one i could distinguish from the others or that blended in at first cuz of the hocketing.

recycling took me awhile too, at first i was like "eh it's okay"
but man, the way it builds up to such a weird, muted, kind of poignant ending kills me. feels like such a strange closer for them.

Jeeeeez... The lyrics put a whole new layer of top-tier to The Burglars. Already was my favourite off the album, but it just might be my favourite thing period.
