not having lyrics / the words being indecipherably fast / vocoded out is a major pet peeve of mine. earlier albums are, in part, so enjoyable because i can (almost) exactly emulate the singers (ok, only dave) to the point where friends have recognized i've actually gained singing ability through sheer force of will / fandom.

CHZ and PW are extremely difficult to understand and it will take a huge number of listens to even start to piece stuff together.

being able to sing along with equivalent excitement and joy (or even the sorrowful emotions) is a big factor in determining how much i enjoy or return to a song long-term. this is why nearly every other piece of work in their discography gets so much play time for me.

also, as an aside, when considering CHZ and PW, I think a simple statement goes a long way: "Sometimes, less is more"

It's strange to hear that people find it "samey" considering the distinct aesthetic of the album.

The shape and structure of the music is so idiosyncratic to Animal Collective...Their synaesthetic, visual approach is as refined and articulated as it's ever been. That is the thing that drew me to them in the first place, and that is also where the emphasis seems to be on this record. Modern, high fidelity, sonic engineering at it's finest. Imagine AC as Bob Ross, and each of the songs on the album are every painting Bob did in season 3. Each painting is it's own unique world, but each painting was done by Bob using nearly all the same colors...

It's suppose to sound "samey" in a way...Putting the same tools to use to create vastly different environments.

When it comes to the sound of the music, stylistically, I completely understand how people might not vibe with it. I personally don't often listen to electronic music of this aggressive, in-your-face nature. It's bizarre, it's confounding, it's a juxtaposition of itself. If this were music created by pretty much anyone else, I probably wouldn't listen to it. But because I've always found their sonic manipulation and ability to build really peculiar little worlds to be my personal favorite quality of theirs, this falls pretty well into that category. I wholeheartedly agree that the album is not emotionally trying or reaching some profound depth...It's just an excellent display of something that you'll find pretty much only from AC.

Point is, we're all listening to it for different reasons. Due to the unsuspecting, ever-morphing nature of their work, this kind of response is expected, always should be.

Well said iKahn. AC has always been a band that won't meet your expectations because they purposefully sidestep them entirely. Since I started listening to them each new album release has been so jarring that I initially have a kneejerk response that it's not as good as what came before, but once I get over that and spend time inhabiting the new space they've created I find it's just as good as all the rest, just in very different ways. PW is no exception to that and I think it'll hold its own among their other classics.

I've listened 5 or 6 times now. I definitely think it's a great album, and it's full of catchy melodies and quirky sounds.. but I'm not sure where it falls in their discography for me. I don't think I like it quite as much (or maybe just in the same way) as MPP or CHz etc just because there's more of this immersive quality on those albums which creates a sonic world for you to get lost in (in my opinion). I think partly I don't feel that way as much about this album because of the absence of reverb, it's a very direct sound and feels less layered. But I'm not saying this as a criticsm necessarily, in a way I think the bare-bones sort of sound will be its strength as time goes on, and a factor which makes it stand out in their catalog. Some other thoughts: Summing the Wretch doesn't get enough praise, it's definitely grown a lot on me, has crazy sounds, and is really catchy... Recycling might be my favorite, the outro is soooooo gooodddd. Anyways, there's not a single bad song on it, great album, will continue listening!

i remember people saying they were over the hill when Feels came out, that they had become just another indie band. it's always been curious to watch them change and people react.

I feel like I am the only member who hasn't listened to this album yet. I can't find a dl link but I also want to listen to higher quality than a vinyl rip. Not sure if I missed out on a higher quality file but this is the first freebirded AC related release that I haven't listened to before official release. I always cave. I've been busy traveling and campaigning for Bernie Sanders so I haven't had much time to think about anything else. BTW, vote for Bernie! I was kind of annoyed to see that there are already so many reviews out before the album is even on shelves.

First Listen: Laptop Speakers. Pre-coffee. angrily felt there wasn't enough depth. Saddened.

Second listen: Headphones. High as a kite. Running in circles on the trampoline beneath the stars. Exhilerated.

Conclusion: It's 100% YOUUUUUUUUUUUU (with this band)

the biggest problem is that there are lines that i feel like i know the words he's saying, but they don't make sense:
"not trying to be short side scoping breaks to score a ride"
"who needs slicker toes to feel a portrait out of place"

Yeah those are pretty close to some lines that I came up with. I'm pretty sure the second line is: "can't tell if this lesson matters less than what's to eat" or something. I just wanna know the lyrics because the melody is so amazing.

Maybe he recycled old lines from other things and pasted them together, Beat style.

This record benefits so much from being viewed in the context of AC's uncompromising trajectory.

I always saw cHz as an active repudiation of MPP's heightened spirituality ... a sick impish experiment in which the band reveled on the debauched floorboards of the material plane... all sweat, heat, crammed bodies, hoarse voices, unshaved faces, dirty fucking, etc.

You'd think, after the somewhat flaccid response, they'd flee to some more secure comfort zone. But in typical bugfuck unyeiding fashion, the band decides to double-down on the man-made materialistic sound palette of cHz... in the hope of LOCATING spirituality there. And they find it in the sheer exuberance of the human voice. These guys love to sing. It's what they were born to do. It's their ticket to spiritual apotheosis and its whats been reclaimed here. I fucking love it.

Haha. Sorry. I'm way down the rabbit hole here.

What, that was beautiful...

This album is so refreshing for me, I love what the direction they went with here. The sound choices they used on this album...I'm not sure if simple or straightforward are the right words, but they're all I can think of at the moment. A lot of the instruments almost sound like 8-bit MIDI sounds...almost. Feel free to disagree with me here, but it sounds to me like one of those albums that anyone could've made if they had just thought of it first, much like the Ramones that they compared it to. I really like that aspect about it personally. I almost want to say that they sound more mature and refined on this album, but I don't want to imply that they've lost their playfulness because they definitely haven't.

Really love the album overall, don't want to jump the gun but I can see this becoming one of my favorites. I see where people are coming from about the songs being kind of same-y, I remember feeling the same way about ETSH and PBVSGR at first. But the more I listened to those albums the more the individual songs stuck out, and I think the same thing will happen with Painting With. Right now Verticals, Bagels in Kiev, On Delay, and Recycling are already standing out for me.

Feels good to be an Animal Collective fan right now!
