re hatredcopter comment: it kind of creates this really specific sound-world with a consistent energy/vibe/synths and textural things that run thru the whole thing i think, tho it is really varied, but its in a similar way that i think feels and mpp have with the way songs are related.. draws off st/sj/chz too tho.

makes me excited for gnip/hounds tho cuz bsides/ep tracks always sit kind of just outside or on the margins of an lp's sound, so maybe those will be even more different..

how is it 'crazy' though? I mean on a surface level you can't deny there's no slower jams or longer songs, and they all seem to focus on being 'poppy' (for a lack of better term) and having vocal interplay etc. Not that this is inherently bad but compared to all of their other albums it ventures into less places.

So it seems like this video on Avey's instagram was of a sample used in Recycling? Sounds like it's there at about 2:30 in the track

Summing the Wretch has definitely been growing on me, but I think it's still my least favorite compared to everything else here. It def feels like it's the most PBVSGR reminiscent song here. A lot of the synths remind me of Principe Real or something.
Recycling gets better with every listen, and I feel like I'm understanding it more and more as a closer. Golden Gal feels like the real, epic showstopping ending, and Recycling is a sweet little epilogue.
And I know they were purposefully experimenting with short, no-nonsense songs, but some still feel a little too short lol. Like to the point where the songs maybe suffer a bit from not having 30 seconds-1 minute extra to breathe. On Delay especially.

Summing the Wretch and Hocus Pocus are my favorites so far

The only one I wish was longer is Spilling Guts, seems like it doesn't go anywhere as-is but I really like where it starts out

like how spilling guts is short and sweet.

and ya i could totally see some songs being a little to much longer, OD especially. kinda interesting how tight and succint everything is. a lot of depth within that framework tho. and i think the momentum rlly does make it a unique full lp listen... they put that pace to good use in songs like burglars. maybe the bootlegs will be a totally different thing if they stretch out some songs

I caved. first impression favorites are floridada, hocus mcpocus, bagels, spilling guts holy shit!!! spilling guts is so good. and recycling.

I am super happy with this album it feels majorly good.

i caved too

i'm in an interesting camp in that i didn't listen to floridada or lying in the grass pre-album, so i went in totally fresh

completely blown away by floridada. really, incredible opener... just made me laugh out loud how intensely joyful and playful that song was! set the tone in an incredible way -- they just rode the wave after that. definitely their happy sharp pristine album.

a lot to take in: my early favorites.

floridada
spilling guts
vertical (THAT BEAT! best AC beat yet)
recycling (hoooooooooooooooooly)

Haven't listened to the album as a whole yet (meditation is KEY) but can I just say how happy I am that these "best of" track lists are so varied!!

That's a good sign for a balanced album -- something I thought MPP did so well and CHZ was lacking.

I guess I just used "crazy" to emphasize that I don't agree. In terms of the pacing of the songs, I guess there isn't anything super slow like bleed or something like that, but there is still a lot variance in tempo imo. Hocus Pocus and Golden Gal are both pretty mellow in tempo/rhythm compared to other fast tracks like bagels/floridada.

I also think that it is venturing into so many new places, that I'm not sure I agree with you saying "it ventures into less places". I might agree after I have heard it more tho.

So I previously had listened to the shittier mp3 versions, and then kept feeling like i couldnt properly hear the melodies or instruments or anything, it was just really fuzzy, even on high quality audio devices. Guys, GET THE FLACs. There is so much going on in the songs and the mp3s vs FLACs makes literally all the difference in the world.

TL;DR I once was blind, but now I see. STOKED

Listening to Verticals is making me realize just how loud and bass-heavy these are probably going to be live
This tour is going to be great

im liking the rankings too, lotta peeps getting different vibes from the one album

recycling - brilliant, Panda writes the best ballads, Dennis Wilson plus GR vibes
burglars - Perfect pop, ending harmonie$ are fire
spilling guts - more perfection in a little rocker
golden gal - classic Avey, the sample.... could be tied best praps?
lying in the grass - happiest final choruses almost rival burglrs
hocus pocus - Brian Wilson writing kids TV about elves washing the dishes circa SMiLE
summing the wretch - what was Panda caught watching?
floridada - Great opener but probs killed it a bit,
on delay - its growing on me
-
vertical
bagels
natural selection
i skip past these last three, hope the b-sides fill it out :)
....Of the album, some of these tracks are the best they've ever written

Recycling is quickly creeping its way into my favs from this album. Anybody have any idea of the lyrics for this song? I can only pick out a few words here and there, but what I do hear sounds really interesting.
Also, The Burglars is already like top 10 AC songs for me.

feel like chz would have seemed more natural if this album came between it and mpp somehow... this one has the rockier elements of chz/sj paired with the melodic/harmonic vibes off mpp.. half-way between those 2 album in a way

oh man, i had my first day volunteering at a uni radio station today, and literally the first thing that's said to me when I walk in is the host saying "Oh man, look at this song our music supervisor wanted us to play! It's so weird" and it was literally Floridada. Awk moment when I was like "oh, that's kinda funny because I actually love this band and this song and I'm really hyped for the new album!"

I made her play it on air later on and she relented, you're welcome ac

I totally understand (but do not agree with) the samey vibe comments. As someone who went into the album pretty fresh (no amazon samples or bathroom flacs), my first thought was that there were so many layers and the songs were so fast paced that it was difficult to discern the melodies. It all kind of blended. After about 4 or 5 listens though, the songs are starting to unravel and reveal themselves. There are so many brilliant moments buried in each song, I can't wait to really sit down with it and give it the attention it demands.

Random notes on songs:
Lying in the Grass is even better in the context of the album.
The middle part of Bagels is indeed one of the most beautiful things AC has ever written
The 2nd half (really the entirety) of Golden Gal is GOAT. Top 5 AC song of all time for me.
The marimba like synths in Spilling Guts really give me that prehistoric vibe the boys talked about.
The vocals in all of the songs are obviously amazing but can we take a minute to recognize how hard Geo goes in this whole thing? Unreal, can't wait to hear it live.
