It's the title from Marcel Duchamp's lampoon of Mona Lisa in which he gave her a mustache.

Here is the meaning behind the letters "The name of the piece, L.H.O.O.Q., is a pun; the letters pronounced in French sound like "Elle a chaud au cul", "She is hot in the arse";[2] "avoir chaud au cul" is a vulgar expression implying that a woman has sexual restlessness. In a late interview (Schwarz 203), Duchamp gives a loose translation of L.H.O.O.Q. as "there is fire down
below" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.H.O.O.Q.

It's funny that the band is reappropiating work from the artist who was the king of reappropiation.

part of me really likes that idea, but the other part likes when the band creates cool new song pairings and segments out of old songs

I also dislike when bands play their albums live in the exact same order of the track listing. Not saying that would be the case though

I don't expect them to play any PB reaper stuff, but a live reworked AC + Jeremy Hyman version of Faces in the Crowd would be $$$$$

Haven't found a thread where to ask this..

I think we all know that the equipment animal collective make is influenced by equipment they're excited to use - or something like that ~

what do you guys think the live equipment will be like this year ?
pretty sure panda won't be bringing back the drum set with all the vocal trade offs ? you never know tho i guess . .
I'm thinking maybe a set up a lot similar to mpp era maybe ? octotrack maybe but we'll see .

anyone speculating anything ?

people are talking about the possibility of an additional live drummer, which im kinda iffy about. would prefer the 3 boys with mostly samples... feel like having the live drums is more limiting for them

oh yeah not doubting him at all, he was incredible with slasher flicks.

I feel like ac songs benefit from flexibility in sound though, and adding a live drum kit is inherently limiting. if you compare the diversity in sound from the mpp shows to the chz shows, the chz stuff has a pretty consistent element with pbear's drum kit, where the mpp sets have an astonishing variety of sound. plus I feel like lots of AC stuff has very simple rhythms, would almost be overkill having a drummer of that skill.

not doubting the boys either way, i know they're gonna put on an amazing tour. im just a nervous nellie :D

I'm no drummer but Panda's kit on the last tour seemed a little unconventional and more tailored to the CHz songs no? I'm sure a drummer like Jeremy who also appears to have some electronics handy will be able to adapt nicely to varied material.

Based on the description of the new LP though I'm very curious as to how they'll integrate older tracks into the set list or if they'll stick to mostly short, punchy songs.

My money is on Colin playing with the boys. The woodwinds seem pretty high in the mix in 2 out of 2 songs they released. Would they replace that with synths? I don't think so. They couldn't just drop all those parts unless they're reworked like someone above said.

i see what ur saying but if u look at the instagram of his set up it looks like he has a pretty flexible non-traditional kit..looks like some electronic drums and a synthesizer alongside a more traditional kit

edit: what sam said

painting with lots of strawberry jam + applesauce on the side

it's hard to imagine what a lot of these songs would sound like with J Hyman on drums. i mean, can you imagine how Hyman would play "brothersport" or something? it's hard for my mind to comprehend, the songs would take on a whole new character with him on drums

I was thinking, in part because of Jer Hy & in part because of how I'm framing old-rules Animal Collective (tour heavily on new songs) with new-rules Animal Collective that we might get to see lots of Painting With tracks on the tour. Like the whole album? Their first tour date is release day, so even that kind of reflects their wishes that the first impression should be the studio versions, meaning no boots until the LP is also in our hands. Especially considering how short the songs are - and it would seem to sort of contradict a lot of what they've been saying about how they want these songs to exist - to jam them out, so like, whole album?

That would be dope. That would leave room for about 20-40 minutes of old jams worked in with Jer Hy, or like, I guess dude could just chill while the big three rip through some classics. That's my theory and until release day / the only day in my life I've wished to live in Philadelphia, proves me wrong, I'm sticking with it.

I asked Jeremy about it at the last Dan Deacon show and he confirmed that he is drumming for AC on this tour. I reeeeally want For Reverend Green with Jer Hy.

Avey said in his new interview w Zane Lowe that the upcoming live shows will feature AC's typical "long expansive pieces". So I think we can expect to hear transitions and extended jams even though the new album is all short songs

That's going to make boots from this era so interesting to listen to.

I think I may try a different approach to this tour. Normally, I obsessively check this site to hear people talk about the sets and arrangements. It's fun to hear about those concerts (and any bootlegs are a joyful thing) but I end up feeling like the "surprises" are spoiled for me before I get to see them.
I may take a break from visiting the forum (if my curiosity doesn't get out of control) once the tour starts and let AC surprise me with their set and arrangements.

Betting they'll bring back a few danse era songs since it's the same trio that made that album, plus they've been talking in interviews about going back to their earlier more primal New York era sound.

Same. February - May is going to be TOUGH but I don't even want their new stage set up spoiled. ChZ era stage was so bonkers I couldn't imagine what they'll conjure up on this go-around.

I think it's cool for those of you planning on going into these shows blind, but I don't mind being spoiled. Sooo looking forward to boots a setlist posts. I feel like they're probably going to keep most nights pretty fresh in terms of order.

I feel like they are going to open these shows with Hocus Pocus or On Delay.

Gonna stay clear of the board from Friday until the NY shows...going in to a live set surprised for the first time in 8 years. Eeeek!
