I'm really hyped for Hocus Pocus, from what I heard with the amazon samples I feel like it's going to be THE Painting With track like how My Girls is THE Merriweather track (like popularity and general recognition, not saying it's the best track on the record)
Also on Wikipedia John Cale has a credit as "drone on "Hocus Pocus"", so I don't know what whoever wrote that means by that or how drone is being defined but I'm super excited about that. Like you can't really play a drone it's sort of more of a genre or type of sound so I don't know. But then part of me is also like, you already got a drone dawg

I just found this review that refers to the record as "Painting Is" and calls Deakin a founding member.

I think the an album stream will be less than a week before release, if at all

litg only "officially" came out as a single on monday, on itunes and spotify and such, so i seriously doubt anything else will come this week.

Gotta predict the opposite, there has to be some kind of special roll-out. I know things have felt kind of sparse, but wouldn't it be weird for them to do something as absurd as debuting the album at an airport, then releasing the second single with a painting app, and then just let the album come out on it's release date like any other album? You'd think they'd want to continue to build hype, not just let it crawl toward the finish line...

The PBVSGR era dominated media. I also agree that the AC dudes will follow this model.

"Painting Is was recorded without founder member Deakin, busy working on his own record"
lmao not only do they refer to him as a founding member, but do so with "founder" rather than "founding"

I think you're right, maybe they'll stream it off the app. It plays the songs in order one with each play through. Or maybe there will be a video stream you can click on

here's how you play a drone. gotta listen to the velvets or the spacemen. it's all about the drone.

also, i am trying to ignore the many errors in that review and praying this comparison is apt.

looks like Painting Is is already riding a cool 75 on metacritic:

Hmmmm.....
A lot of people seem to be extremely lukewarm about the album. However, most of the people who have listened seem to have only heard it once to three times before writing about it. It clearly seems like a grower judging from people's reception to the singles and going off of BansheeBeat. I'm afraid that a lot of people are going to try it out once or twice and expect instant greatness on first listen because it's Animal Collective.
My personal hype hasn't diminished by any means (I'm personally stoked over their change in approach, and I'm a pop-AnCo guy), but I really have no idea how this album will be received (critically) to be honest. I do think that some people are a little afraid and uncomfortable will the direction that the guys are going, but it's honestly on them for making expectations about AnCo's sound.
I did however get a random text message from a friend who couldn't really get into any of the few AnCo songs that I've showed her in the past saying "Have you seen this Painting With Animal Collective app?" I was really surprised that she found out about it somehow without me talking about it. She said she actually really liked the song and that the album seemed cool. So, it's getting me thinking that the album can reach out to the tastes of a lot of people. I just hope that long-time fans will give it the shot that it deserves.
Also I'm not being skeptical here, just observing the things I've read from people who claim to have heard the album (who seem to have believable proof, but you know).

thinking about how it's going to be received from anyone but you is a toxic thing to think about. or wanting people to like it or to try and convince people to. it really does not matter.

True, but I'm not doing either of those things, or at least thinking about its reception isn't getting in the way of my hype. Critical reception won't make a difference on my personal view of the album; it is more than perfectly acceptable for me to be curious about what other people think, so long as it doesn't blind me from forming my own opinion.

Apathetic towards Joe Biden really. Fair play to him and all that. I find his opinions really jaded but he can be amusing sometimes. He does mostly just describe how the music sounds though and then tack on a score. Describtithy Tackscoreno.
Anyways, I bet he will 'feel' a mid to high six on Painting With. 'Floridada is a great opener but LP fails to reach that high again, hocketing is a little overused, not really too many standout tracks, but the harmonies sound great and the LP is infectious, et cetera...'

i'm like 90% sure he will give this a "loved" review or whatever. albums he loves are the kind that are not very good when i listen to them but the melodies really don't shine until 5th listen or so. PW is extremely catchy but a lot of those catchy parts seem kind of abrasive and repetitive on the first listen. However, when I listen to the album now it's almost kind of a relaxing album and I'm noticing that there is like 5 songs worth of amazing melodic progressions that they're melding together for a song that's less than 3 minutes.
Those metacritic reviews so far look trash

I would have said it will be received better than CHz, but not as much as the other albums (if the other tracks are about the same quality as FloriDada and Lying in the grass).

I'm real stoked for this album obviously, but damn I keep thinking about what Gnip Gnop might sound like.
