funny ac-related experience i wanted to share with y'all:
Spoiler: show
so today is my 21st birthday and last night i went bar hopping and my friends got me waaay too drunk. by 3am we were at this sketchy dive bar in a bad part of town, and i noticed that there was a juke box directly behind me. I put god knows how much money into it and selected the following in this order, without much thought, although the 3 HCTI songs i picked solely because they are really inaccessible to the general population and two of them are very long:
1. banshee beat
2. i feel ya strutter by of montreal
3. two sails
4. slippi
5. infant dressing table
6. nothing at all by gentle giant
7. the power and the glory by gentle giant

and i just sat there with a big grin on my face and people-watched / listened to thier conversation, a lot of which i documented via text

during banshee beat:
-'is this seriously the whole fucking song?
-'if this is the whole song i'm gonna stick somebody's head in the toilet'
-'twilight fucking song, the humming is cutting right through me'
-'you really like this fucking song?' (bartender to me, to which i just smiled and nodded enthusiastically)
-'sounds like something you'd listen to on halloween if you had a haunted house'

then during two sails:
-'a fucking album of this shit would kill me'
-'this is straight-up slit your throat music'
-'the bartender should be fired for even having this on the juke box'
-'i can't stand this bullshit excuse for music'

about halfway through sails i went to the bathroom and while i was in the bathroom the bartender went and skipped the song, hoping for relief, only to be greeted by SLIPPI, i was laughing my fucking ass off leaning against the stall i was in

i come out and it's ending and infant dressing table comes on. my friends tell me that people walked out during two sails with disgusted looks on their faces, and then after a just couple minutes of infant dressing table someone walks up to the bartender and says 'three bucks if you skip this' and she does.

the next two tracks were also skipped shortly after they started

i also remember at some point (i think after i came out of the bathroom) telling someone to 'try to vibe with that ambient shit' lol...embarrassing but funny in retrospect
tl;dr i very drunkenly put on several tracks from HCTI among other things at a dive bar and wrote down the funny stuff people said

happy bday!
how come "nothing at all" was skipped? i'd almost call that song a prototype of "stairway to heaven", depite the drum solo. the drumsolo is pretty tedious...

haha thanks guys!!

yeah it was a digital jukebox, i'm pretty sure they had a lot of AC but i can't say with much certainty lol, they definitely had at least most, if not all of their albums

also yeah bullseye they played nothing at all until the drum solo kicked in lol that was too much for them to handle

I've been going backwards through their discography and I'm at Campfire Songs now. What do you guys think of it? It's really odd to me in that there are only two very discernable parts in it, which are the "so still..." parts in Doggy and the "marshmallow people" bit in De Soto De Son. The rest is an acoustic haze like Visiting Friends. This isn't bad but it is difficult to tackle, if you know what I mean. It all sounds nice but I don't get a lot out of them and it's hard to determine one apart from another. Anyone have similar issues with it? I still like the album but I'm not totally sure if I get its aesthetic yet.

Short answer: listen more until the songs sketch themselves more clearly in your mind. There's much more to it than a strum haze.

Longer answer: I was totally in the same boat as you. It's still my least listened to AC album, I reckon. I have to be in the mood for it, or rather, I have to have time to sink into its mood. What I love about it is that it's like a snapshot of an evening sitting out on the step with Animal Collective. It's not happy clappy, it's pretty gloomy and sad in parts but it's real and beautiful. Initially, though, I did think it was just a mush of strumming and gentle wailing. As with most of their records, I almost wish I could remember what it was like to hear these 'formless' sounds before they clicked. Wonderful times, being intrigued but not yet hooked, meeting them halfway by making yourself sit down and listen and then suddenly it starts to take shape.

Shortest answer: Doggy transition, ya dummy!

Listening to the backwards Opis Helpus is sorta helping me understand why they put it backwards. I mean I love it forwards, but the backwards sounds very nice. I like the melody and chord progression.

EDIT: Woah, timeout. My forward version was also not half as long. It's apparently supposed to be 8:33. Meaning there's part of the album I've never heard forwards. BRB reversing it.

I can tell ya what it means to me.

When I first got into these guys, I had a strong visual relationship to their sounds(because of psychedelics)...and a lot of their sounds have this living quality to it, no matter how fat, short, skinny, small they are...Kind of reminds me of the coral-esque looking green stuff on the cover of Water Curses.

Basically, I always just assumed them to be talking about these little creatures they were creating with their sounds. Always got to wash them at their ends, as in polish them and make sure they're functioning correctly in their place. Clean them up, eliminate the fuzz, add life, then they're good to go.

Kind of wacky in retrospect, but that's still what I think of even years later.

Deakin's fav song off of Feels is Banshee Beat, or at least it was ca. 2007 (this is from the CA2 Q&A)
Spoiler: show
Fan: hey
i was wondering if you guys had a specific song off feels that you espesially enjoyed making or just stands out in general over others? or do you just like them all as a whole and dont view the songs as being separate from eachother?
thanks
chris

Deakin: I loved the whole record honestly. But i will say that for the entire time leading up to the recording of Banshee Beat... most times that we played it whether practicing, performing or recording i would cry or at least tear up. It is hard to explain exactly why... some of it is personal and some of it is just one of those things where when the right combination of sounds and melodies and vibrations come together i would get choked up. after we spent two weeks mixing the record that stopped because it got so involved in the sound specifics and i lost a bit of the emotion. but since we have taken time away when we play it live it has started happening again. it means a lot to me and probably always will. I also really liked Flesh Canoe. It just felt good when it really came together just right.
Regardless, Daffy Duck is fucking awesome

Thanks for this post. I still have trouble with Queen in my Pictures and Two Corvettes but listening now to De Soto De Son it's a lot easier to pick out the more melodic bits. Compared to the rest, it's like when the clouds clear after rain and everything is easier to see. Fantastic song too, very helpful advice!

In the '09 Paradiso video, I love when Avey says they'd like to dedicate the show to their friend Fitz "because it's St Patrick's Day where he's from," and then just a moment later he adds, "...and that would be Ireland." For some reason I find that last bit hilarious. I guess there's just something funny about the fact that he had to clarify that he's from Ireland

Think of her as Mother Goose and AC as her stories.

I love Vashti's collaboration on that album. Her contribution is so archetypal and really nails the spirit of the "happy singing band" days.
