For those going to the show tonight, please ask Avey if this "Eucalyptus" solo album is legit

Anyone seen Circuit des Yeux on this tour? I really like Haley's music but I wouldn't imagine it fits well with the current iteration of AC....

It's excellent, I think it's in the spirit of what ACs doing. Catch Circuits Des Yeux if you can

Haven't seen any shows on this tour but I saw a couple of instagram vids of CDY opening, in one she was screaming and in another one she was doing some sick fx pedals manipulation shit. Seems like it'd be worth seeing

You'll have to allow me this CA, I've been seeing these guys live for over 12 years now...
Last night's show was the most disappointing show I have been to. I actually couldn't stop thinking about Spinal Tap. The band has changed the way they do things so much since I first saw them: from the dialing in of old songs by triggering the original samples to the garish and distracting sets and lights.
I admit I do not like the new album, but they weren't even able to pull off old songs convincingly. They turned Bees into a ravey dance thing when on the last tour it was one of the few songs that actually worked BECAUSE they took their time with it and let it stretch out. Would it have killed Avey to reinvigorate the jam and bring an autoharp on tour to actually play the part from the song. I guess there was no room because of the giant plastic heads (aka stonehenge).
The absolute lowlight was this moment when Avey was repeating the phrase "experiiiiimentalll guittttaaarrrr" over and over while the lights bobbed up and down in the giant plastic heads. I was cracking up laughing at how stupid it was and how it made painfully obvious that there was no guitar or anything remotely experimental or interesting going on. Maybe that was the Dada point of it all; either way it was not entertaining or exciting.
One of the best parts was when the band actually did get experimental and dropped off of Bearhug in the middle of the bridge. They actually sounded like they were using their synths and oscillators like instruments and did a cool little experimental interlude...of course they then had to go back to triggering the 505s to finish up the MPP song, a crowd pleasing choice, ironic in that I've never seen an AC crowd so mellowed out and not feeling the music in their bodies; only the hardcore few at the front were moving to the music.
They seem to be trying to live in the experimental zone and the pop zone all at once, dressing up songs with weird squishes and squiggles that don't serve the actual writing in any way...they really are just trying to tell us what to feel instead of showing us how they feel through the music. And jesus! either let Jeremy play ALL the percussive parts or don't have a drummer! If they had made a decision either way it would have made for a interesting choice that would have affected how they present this music. As it was, Jeremy was just dressing up whatever thumping electro beat that was being triggered on the 505's or Octatracks.
The best part was Daily Routine. For a fleeting moment it felt like a Panda solo show, and he was allowed to have room and space to really show off his voice. And they allowed the arpeggio to fill the space entirely, a stark and beautiful choice; I wish they had approached the whole show in that way.
Circuit Des Yeux blew AC out of the water. Her raw, experimental, intimate, loud, virtuosity on the guitar was really affecting; and all under just minimal house lights. I miss the days when AC would let a song like Cuckoo Cuckoo unfold and waft through a room, inviting and surprising the crowd at every corner.

out of all the things in ur post that are perplexing about ur post gotta say avey allegedly saying "experimental guitar" is the funniest...
(also it's funny you mention them bringing the autoharp for the bees out since even in 2004 the few times they played bees the autoharp part is played through a sampler)

Yeah they've always been really good a reinterpreting old songs in new ways i.e. having a live instrument would really make it different, interesting, new, challenging. I think they did a good job of reinterpreting Taste last night in that way but unfortunately it didn't pack much of a punch.

jerry your post made me sad and angry
I tried to write some counterpoints because I think some of what you wrote was really inflammatory but ultimately your opinion can't be wrong so I guess it wouldn't be productive of me to argue
Being Australian I haven't been able to actually see them live this tour but I really loved the recent stream of the Moogfest set because they appeared to be having so much fun with the songs. Maybe this show was different and it didn't come through when you saw them... idk

Avey Tare is allergic to harps, or anything with a harp in its name. His throat starts swelling up. His face gets beet-red, and he can't stop coughing. It's really awful to see. Please be more considerate next time you see Avey play Bees without the autoharp by his side.

I actually enjoyed the new version of bees, it was fun. Wednesday's show was a lot better than when I saw them last February. All the Painting with tracks seemed more well-rehearsed and developed. Also was super excited when they played Water Curses. I would have to say I enjoyed the Centipede Hz tour in Boston more than both times I've seen them on the PW era tours. But this recent string of shows seems to be better than when they just started debuting the songs. Also, I think they played maybe two brand new songs I had never heard???

i dont agree with majority but epecially that ac doesnt let their songs just unfold...ALL the painting with shows i saw including this one gave plenty of time for the songs to develop and take up the space of the venue..from all the shows ive went to all the boots ive listened to i dont think theres a time when ac doesnt do this
and conversly i liked cdy cuz she reminded me of the band natural snow buildings but seemed more meandering and like a one note act..like every song eventually turned into the first one with the deep howling and up down rapid strum pattern.

Been a fan for 12 years too, and while I don't agree with most of what Jerry said, I really appreciate him sharing his thoughts - fans are allowed to be disappointed and should be critical of their favorite bands. I was let down by the AC for the first time with ODDSAC and then CHz. But I didn't abandon them, and now I'm happy that, imo, they've never been a better live band. But I think most of Jerry's points are valid and worth thinking about. Jerry's disappointment doesn't diminish your excitement or mine.

i'd always imagined them rehearsing changes between live sets. The moog fest "interview" only seemed to tell me no they don't. They guess their way based on the drum or bass beat(don't remember which) and align things as they go. This made me think of different posts i've read on here of criticisms of when they've been off key or tempo during performances. They must all tweak certain things at times, geologist especially, and panda and avey vocally for sure. I'm continually amazed by the complexity and yet simplicity of their musical adaptations. I just recently discovered there are multiple versions of 'always you' that i hadn't heard and am graciously pleased by the growing dedicated portable hard drive i use for their music. Cuz fuck there's so much gold. Just special.

Having seen AC 5 times on this tour I thought their recent sets are really good. Some of the new versions of songs I also really dug live like Sweet Road which I recorded- https://youtu.be/s-xonK4bLEE and the fast version of Bees we thought was fun.
Being on a road trip with someone I'm sure made us more hyped about the shows but we had a lot of fun at them.
I would agree with one thing though- to see them bust out some more instruments I think could really add to the shows. Like if they would bust out a guitar and play Reverand Green and some other songs with guitar.
Personally I'd rate this tour positively though and I also noticed like is being said here that the songs do sometimes vary at different shows. For example the middle part of songs could be different or even the way they mix up the vocals, etc.
This may also be normal for AC to do but we got to met them after most of the shows which was cool. They all were friendly to meet. Avey, Panda and Geo were all down for signing stuff and chatting a bit after most of the shows we saw.

Most likely can't make it to the Seattle show. I spent $43.50 on this ticket, plus $20 as a fee for transferring money to checking. Dammit.

Just realised the OC show I'll be attending next week is the first of the west coast dates. Gonna be one chill Saturday, I wonder if they've prepared anything new for the set in the month since their last show (will be content to catch Sweet Road / Taste at the very least).

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I don't want to get my hopes up on any song in particular, but I imagine we might get one new one at the very least, like we did last year after their breaks. They could just bring back something they dropped in a new way, though.

This might be a dumb idea but I was thinking about it: should CA users at any of the upcoming concerts somehow wear their CA name, so if anyone else from CA shows up, we could recognize each other?

I just searched for #animalcollective on Instagram and didn't hear any new setlist additions in any of the vids posted. But they did play Daily Routine, Guys Eyes, Summertime Clothes, Bees, and Pride and Fight, seems like a pretty sick show

Pretty standard but was a nice mix of songs. There was something between Peacemaker and Sweet Road that might have been new or it could have just been Avey improvising, sounded like he was singing "dismembering the (something)" or it could have been "this memory". Anyone recognize it?
