I totally agree. But really those reviewers jobs, above critiquing, is to make controversial or memorable quotes so that more people notice what they have to say and in turn more people visit the site. They are well aware of the large super fanbase AC has spawned and they are totally capatializing on it
A bad review of a popular artist usually means more people will check out that review

After reading those reviews I can't help but wonder: Is it cool to hate on Animal Collective? Obviously I don't think it's cool, but after all the MPP glory it's like people feel obligated to do it, haha. At least this band is taking risks

without being flippant, if you like writing and music and think you could do better than try to get a job doing it yourself! not that it would change all the shitty writers

I'd be surprised if those reviews are written with more than 1 or 2 listens.
The thing that I find personally about AnCo's discography is that I can go back and listen to songs I've heard many many times, and when I'm sitting and actually paying attention, I'll find harmonies (panda singing in the background of some song) or instruments, or sound textures, or patterns I didn't notice before.
There's this deep complexity to the music that you really can't just "review" with a listen.

I'm pretty sure the reviewers gave it at least 5 listens or so. Tbh, the song is somewhat polarizing and I kind of expected some critics to pan it. It's not like everyone should have to 'get it' before they finalize their reviews. A lot of these people just don't care for Animal Collective, and I never expect an individual to like Animal Collective. They can throw whatever scores they want around, so long as I get what Animal Collective wants to release to us.
I honestly wouldn't even say that that site is relevant anyway; I mean, who are these people again?

I always wonder how long music reviewers get the music before the review is published?
A lot of music takes significant time to take it and digest.

Thanks, that's awesome

great interview after they were savaged by single reviews. interesting about live performances and 'demoitis'. will they ever promote an album without mentioning wanting to sound 'organic'?

new interview with animal collective
"Lennox: There was another intent to doing it that way. At least in the past bunch of years, it seems like it’s common for people to come to the shows and record them and pass around the recordings on the internet. Which is a great thing, and I think we like that a lot. But it also means that people’s first impression of the song is that live version or live recording, and then when the studio version comes out one can get attached to that first impression so I think it was exciting for us to present a version where the studio version is the first impression. The jury is still out on that, but we’ll see how it works."
lol who does that..?

I am a professional music writer, and I can tell you guys that the exact reason the reviews are like that is because it gets people to read them. I love Floridada, but if it would get my site more traffic to pan it, I could easily write a christgau-esque three line shit soliloquy and that would be that.

I take the demoitis thing as a direct response to my entitled embittered moaning on the forum for the past few years. I hope they've paid close attention to all my suggestions. This could be a decent album if so.

Such a stark contrast to the egregious shit-fest they did on FloriDada.
Speaking as a former journalist and sensible human being, I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, and of course as a critic you're paid to share that opinion, but I just feel like that FloriDada review page was bizarre and over the top. They referred to it as self-parody, didn't they? That reminds me of the embarrassing Pitchfork review of Belle and Sebastian's The Boy With the Arab Strap, where they gave it a 0.1 and said B&S were just a self-parody with that album. It's understandably been removed from the site.

the tour announcement and presale is the biggest thing to happen this week, obviously discussion should move to the live forum eventually but give people a break, they are excited

This should freebird now. It's moved on to the second page of CA now, which means the new approach-- not testing the songs live and giving us bootlegs-- is defeating the hype.

Ughhh it's so close! Petek I need this! I am not doing well mentally and my life has spiraled out of control. Last night the only thing stopping me from doing something awful was my daughter and missing the new AC. I know that seems outrageous but their music really means something to me.
