yeah I feel like that bootleg Looms in a way that nothing else in their live recordings can match. It really kicked off a decade of really awe-inspiring creative choices from panda in debut performances I think. I felt that way about Drone the first time I heard it and in retrospect the groundwork is there in the mid-00s shows, but the confidence and boldness of the ATP set is just incredible

I actually think Lisbon Zoo turned out great. Especially when you consider that Noah was going to throw it away and Boom saved it from the eternal prison of unreleased demos. Jabba on the other hand...

I completely agree and love how the studio version turned out. I'm surprised that so many people seem to be turned off by the bass synth, I love it! My only gripe with it is that it doesn't transition into Jabba (which is turned out pretty disappointing anyway).

It’s so so amazing how the melody like moves back a beat and gets all spooky at around 0:38 in Lisbon zoo. That mix is def odd though

I FORGET WHO IT WAS WHERE IT WAS, BUT SOMEONE CURATED A MIX OF PBVSGR THAT PRESERVES THE LISBON ZOO --> JABBERWOCKY MONOLITH AND INFUSES THE ANSKY COMMERCIAL INTRO AND EVERYTHING.

I remember getting wildly stoked on the early PBVSGR live tracks/performances too but I didnt get too burnt on demoits that time. Like I knew what people were talking about... the recorded versions def didnt really capture the kinda wild and rough energy of the first live versions... seems like if anything that record should have almost been under produced and loose, and like PP's insane cousin, but clearly thats not what Noah wanted.

I think part of it is I stopped like... fully downloading live versions and listening to them heavily post CHZ since that kinda burnt my Mercury Man experience slightly... I just dip my toes in now.

But I may have fucked up with old Cherokee/Passerby now so who knows..

The Avey solo stuff right after down there was so good. Mountain games makes it seem like it coulda been converted into a whole ac album. In another universe…

It was brave/noble/artistically and spiritually correct to not release the oddsac soundtrack but I still wish they did. It’s the best

Bon sang. What was he thinking? Everything about it screams, “Domino, have your cake.” Double exposure of a coupla leaves, get out a Sharpie, call it a day. Weird.

Trying to get over the Bolder into We Go Back changes. Feels more congealed now but I miss some of the raw energy from ‘19. The more autotune, the better.

The evolution of Defeat is a topic worthy of in-depth analysis (which may be on another thread I haven’t found yet). I’m still abstaining from the Music Box material until they officially release it so I acknowledge I’m missing 1/3 of the puzzle from the get go. Defeat ‘19 helped me get through covid times so demoitis was inevitable going into the ‘21 shows. I don’t feel the same raw electricity but it’s also masterfully woven together now and much more coherent and fluid. I truly miss the off-the-wall bonkers energy of the middle carnival music section. The edges of it feel sanded down; creamier but not as punk. Or I’m just the only insane one flipping out and dancing like a maniac whenever that breakdown happens.:)

Overall I think the soul of the song has evolved to give equal weight to both the “grab something, take hold” hopeful section and the downward spiral of the coda. For me, ‘19 plays like a bolder, sadder journey. It plays more experiential; in the moment. ‘21 is more hopeful and knowing, anticipating the cycle shift (of time, life, mood, the universe), embedding words of wisdom and love to prepare the listener/wanderer for the long (tragic) journey ahead.

The song is a masterpiece in every iteration. It crystallizes the strange cycles and movements of life through unconventional writing techniques that warp the structures of myth and story into something misshapen, odd and transcendental.

I really don't feel bad about most of the live songs that have never been recorded in studio. like, From a Beach, Sleeper Factory, Happy Singing Band, etc. are all wonderful to listen to in their current recorded form.

if I had to pick, maybe their decision not to tour the PW material before recording it

legit yeah. i love the way pbvsgr turned out in the end and i have nothing but love for Pete's work on it but part of me wishes we truly did get the chaotic songs that made up what we used to call Peezus

I actually personally dont mind it, i still love that song, but if it didn't have that effect, everyone would love it. it's actually a gorgeous song and a lot of people dont even realize it because the whole song goes WAaAwAwAWawAWawWAwa

i STILL haven't heard shit like it. perfect mix of noisy-ass groovin beats and simple, lullaby melodies. i honestly feel like it would have been another MPP or Person Pitch had the atp versions been dropped during that era

Not putting Safer on SJ. And then releasing it on an EP that has 3 peacebones.

Avey Tare not recording and releasing the extra songs he played on his 2011 solo tour.
Avey Tare releasing the album he did with his ex wife recorded backwards.

Always You not being recorded and released, as well in a beach

For me noah not putting jabberwocky, cosplay and faces in the crowd in grim reaper. I think it would fly high the incredible pop potential of that album and it would become an istant classic of stoner culture, instead of the niche gem of stoner culture which is now.

I feel Greaper started off with those classic drum breaks being central with the other ingredients thrown on top. Over time working on the tracks they became their own thing and the breaks sort of faded into the background. The drops wouldn't have made sense on the final versions of the songs given how they ended up sounding and feeling, for better or for worse. They don't hit hard enough in the mix

thought this was an awful idea for a thread bc of the negativity and i hate to bump it but now i am very happy it exists (lol) because i just revisited cows and i gotta say, i cant believe avey changed the chorus of remember mayan from 'what a thing to be growing' to 'what a thing to be called king,' i barely listened to the studio version of that song and couldn't remember why and now i remember

as an general aside, i've found that as a big listener of the bootlegs ahead of an album release/sufferer of demoitis on first listen, the vast majority of changes i'm initially upset with go away when you put the studio album down and pick it up again a few months or a year later. only a handful of things still bother me (namely selfish gene sounds absolutely declawed like it's coming out of a goddamn nokia phone rather than the huge beast nadir was live, also several other pbvsgr tracks arent as good as their rawer live versions)

edit: wow just read the thread and most of it is about pbvsgr so i'm definitely not alone in feeling that way lol
