inspired by recent talks in the Time Skiffs and live shows threads, this might be a bummer thread but what in yr opinion is the WORST choice they've made re like... anything. Could be an unreleased track, a LP tracklist thing, a "demoitis" type thing and/or major change in live-to-studio recording choice or something I'm not thinking of.
For me, I think I just want From a Beach to be studio-recorded and also on FBK. Maybe just instead of I Think I Can or just throw it in as track 3 idk.
2nd place is I think the CHZ track-list could have been more choice. Maybe release Monkey Riches/NTB as a non-album single and put on Crimson I guess. Or swap out MR/NTB w/ Honeycomb/Gotham. Make Wide Eyed more like the acoustic version possibly... etc.
people are freaked about Defeat not being on Time Skiffs (probably) so maybe that one doesn't count, cuz its semi universal (tho we must accept...). Also include solo stuff.

oh, and live-set choices also count. Or the absence of songs during live-sets rather.

hey, monkey riches has always kinda stuck out like a sore thumb for me in terms of things-i-barely-get. Don't really even sound like Avey or AC to me. But that whole middle section of CHZ is kinda distancing for me (Monkey, NTB AND Wide Eyed) so it gets blurry for me. Love the opening and closing third of the album so much more.
but yeah ok. Big disagree on Buoys tho, shit slaps even if Homies is strangely superior and I don't really ever listen to Buoys tracks anymore (same goes for a lot of solo stuff... I like fresh shit I guess and full-band might age better for me...maybe...)

y'know, i think it's kinda funny that since 2019 we've been crossing our fingers that they're gonna turn all this material into a masterpiece studio album. thinking about it for a second, animal collective have never really been in the business of big, self-conscious magnum opuses. they've always leaned way more towards their id rather than their superego, so to speak, doing what feels good to them in the moment rather than what will result in the most objectively unimpeachable final product. that philosophy is baked into the fabric of their sound and identity; it's so much of what makes them special.
and on the other side of the same coin, they've been consistently frustrating fans with seemingly odd decisions ever since they closed sung tongs with whaddit i done but never even released covered in frogs or sleeping factory. we almost certainly have some analogous head scratchers to look forward to as the proper album rollout gets going. but in retrospect, every era of the band has ultimately been about the untethered sounds, ideas, and feelings surrounding the released material rather than the released material itself. time skiffs, and the followup record, and whatever eps and singles come of this particular creative wave will be what they are. i think it's best to keep in mind that really, it's about the wave and not the .wav (sorry)
this post from Stories and Games inspired me cuz like... I trust them and am ultimately ok with all their choices, but we can't deny we have things we-- as superfans-- would do or handle differently and thats kinda interesting to me. but yeah either way

Don't silence dissenting voices, ya babies!
Instead of me having to take a dump in the pool of excitement that is Next AC LP/era 2019-?, Dio has built me (us!) a gold-seated crapper.
'Rhetoric'? Come on.
You gassers/nukers have been 100% on board with their whole discog for the past 21 years? No!
We must be able to admit and express our frustration about the Glasslands Suite (part 2: Grandma/Dog); keeping that suppressed is why people drop dead out of the blue at 50.
All of it always comes from us all being huge AC-nerds, loving a lot of their music and having very high expectations every time. I don't think Stan should STFU; I feel for the guy, I love studio Jabberwocky...
What's this one? Demoitis from the ARTE recording?

1st would be Principe Real studio version, easily. Other PBVSGR tracks also got overproduced imo. The first ATP boots sounded so raw and powerful
2nd imo would be Monkey Riches studio version, I loved the energy of the Pitchfork 2011 version so much that the studio version felt bland. Got used to it eventually

It's cool man I know it's toxic, but it seems fair given there is so much outpouring of love right now (??). The force must always be balanced
Really just an excuse for me to post more rn cuz I caught fanboy fever from the new live shows and am Too Online (on CA) yet again

Mine would for sure be all the songs that just never got recorded/released
Sponge Luke, glasslands suite, always you, covered in frogs, dont believe the pilot, from a beach, jungle heat, hey friend, ice cream factory - a lot of these stand with the best of their released stuff
And also just imagine if all the stuff from the hollinndagain era (full pumpkin trilogy, etc) got a studio treatment as clean and polished as HCTI - actually thatโs probably my biggest lament that it never did, that era is still so entrancing to me

Down There tour songs, along with From a Beach, are my biggest casualty. Esp. Slow Words..
It must be this really intuitive vibes-based thing for them. For all we know, they love those songs too, but something must just not feel quite right about them in terms of recording/releasing. Sure they did in fact record a lot of that too in a studio. And just made some difficult editorial choice to forgoe it's unleashing . The world may never know..

What's this one? Demoitis from the ARTE recording?[/quote]
i just think he handled the recording poorly, the "oooh" at the beginning is so bleh and i dislike the influence of autotune rather than the lower pitched vocal overdubs he had going on the og tour version

Definitely feel you on this one. Still love the final track but that ARTE recording version went so hard. Sad it's gone from the tubes

I think the dramatic title is why the first reactions were negative. I can't speak on worst decision, but Ii thought Ballet Slippers sounded pretty bad for most the tracks (really distant sounding from my memory)

Signature material right here
The pbvsgr production is particularly tragic to me because of how psyched I was on the raw, wild sound of the earliest bootlegs from that era. a tale as old as time...
Maybe jumping the gun to say this because time skiffs isn't out yet, but I think it's seriously regretful that they didn't pursue an album more based on the sound used at the 2018 music box show. especially since the newest shows feel weirdly tame and predictable to me. i miss that manic, spooky energy so much, for magicians and defeat and even prester... and if spider bit my lady never gets properly recorded (it won't) i'm going to be sad forever

Most of the (few) gripes I have had with their decisions have already been listed here.
I was especially devastated when the lyrics to mercury man were changed for the studio version. "to work/sleep/talk with someone in the heart of nowhere..." was one of my favorite moments from the live version. I'm glad the og mercury man is at least available on the bonus DVD.
Altough it gives the album a very unique sound, I do question the decision of mixing half the instrumentation on STGSTV to sound like it's coming from a tiny phone speaker. Maybe it wasn't so much a decision but more like inexperience, idk.

Whattttt? It maybe isn't as HQ as I want their live recordings to be (and their newer ones probably are) but I think it sounds great on vinyl at least. That Banshee Beat is so huge.

domino really made zero effort to promote Lisbon Zoo, not even in the vinyl theres anything wrote about it... if you are not on CA i don't know how you are suppose to know about this track
It was an after thought . Once i mixed it , Noah approved it ,
But it was thought to be a dead end until that .
It may be bcuz of that sample that Domino went very soft on it......

It was a monster but it turned out wimpy, unfortunately.
Still, thank goodness we got the ATP rehearsal demos. In hindsight, that's really very very generous and open of Noah (and no doubt prompted by Peter's enthusiasm and affection for the material). I just wish they'd leptospirosis that rawness.
Edit: hell of an autocorrect. I'll leave it.

I actually think Lisbon Zoo turned out great. Especially when you consider that Noah was going to throw it away and Boom saved it from the eternal prison of unreleased demos. Jabba on the other hand...

It turned out better than Jabba, but still very limp and the added bass line made it sound goofy.

I really think the original ATP performance of the greaper songs influenced my love of music and interest in making music more than anything else in the 2010s, which is wild
