"Collective" is usually a bit of an eye roller.
I think because of their true underground roots and consistently earnest output they sidestep the silliness of the name

There's def interview's/quotes from at least Avey where he says he thinks the name's kinda whack too. And like, thinks Vampire Weekend is a better band name lol.
But yeah the stay tru to the Collective thing, basically this whole time. Remember when panda quit the band and Avey/Geo/Deak made 2 of their best live performances of the decade (Tangerine/M-Box). And then just 2 of them went to the Rainforest 2 make their second best EP of the decade. And they all did fire ass solo shit the whole time
I call them Animal boys

I didn't really want to add something to this, but I couldn't resist. Outside of a few music videos like who could win a rabbit, I feel like most of their music videos are pretty bad. As much as I love the album cover and general asthetics of Time Skiffs, I felt that the recent music videos including walker are pretty corny and awkward. I feel like their sound and music evolves and matures, but often time their asthetics, especially in music videos, doesn't. The art direction from spirit up until merriweather was really good, then they just became a perody of some asthetic that seems a bit immature. I don't know, just felt like I had to get this off my chest, and it hurts me to say, because they are my favorite band. However, I usually enjoy their posters and t-shirt design, especially recently, besides the panting with era. I mean, their recent poster for the ashville show is amazing, and the stuff they did for the sung tongs tour was great.

I honestly feel a similar way about it. Their aesthetic has kind of just become "psychedelic stuff". I don't mind it but it does feel more restricted and less natural than before. I enjoy the new videos, but not because of the art, just because they're fun; other than that, especially with the Walker video, it really is just "let's throw in as many colors and zany things as possible cuz we're so psychedelic!!!" ... but again, I don't mind, it's all fun, just a bit silly

I think I kinda always knew not to take their vids seriously... esp compared to something like ODDSAC where it feels that is a cohesive vision that the band fully approves of. But yeah, if it's not Perez or Abbey Portner directed, than I understand it as non-canon way of getting more people into the music.
I def don't mind it, and would never really think to go to their videos for real Art on the level of their music. TBH I remember precisely the Bro Sport video is what confirmed that for me. Besides the cool animated dudes, that video literally has like little kids playing with paint and shit and its like, way too obvious in a bad way.
But yeah, I mean I would never go to music videos for like good, serious "Art". That being said, I will say the new Walker vid looks "fun" from the clips I saw. And that's probably all vids should be.

IMO the only canon AC videos are pre-digital-FX-orgy Perez stuff, so just who could win a rabbit and Oddsac afaik. Fireworks is not bad tho. The boys Latin video is also pretty great

That monkey riches music video... What da fuck. I like their Abby/Perez music vids though . Matches their maximalist ideas really well.

Yeah ones that seem legit/"canon":
-WCWAR
-FWX (some also like Peacebone, I'm good on it honestly)
-In the Flowers (Abbey directed)
-Guys Eyes? (Geo is in it)
-ODDSAC
-Today's Supernatural (Danny Perez dir., Avey in it)
-Bridge to Quiet (CA member created and it owns)
-Walker (Prester is aight)

Ha! Yep, fair call.
Re: Art and vids - I'd agree that the cover art up until MPP was all pretty rad. The only one I really don't like is CHz actually. And the Tangerine Reef cover is AWESOME. I've never really loved any AC vids. WCWAR might be the only one. Even ODDSAC has big stretches that I'm not really into visually. Doesn't matter, I'm in it for the jams.

Wrote that before I saw this video lol. It is awesome, but the square aspect ratio is strange to me in a post-Instagram world- makes it feel like just a visualizer, even though it is high quality

I honestly don't tend to think of AC music videos as being in any sort of canon - it's always interesting to see outside visual interpretations of the band's music, whether they're from close repeat collaborators or fresh faces, and whether they're psychedelic textures or abstract glitchiness or animation or performance vids or mini narratives or anything inbetween. Of course there are a few that I like less - I wish FloriDada had more of the worldly 2D animated scenes like the dancer and the grooving titular state rather than the 3D figures, and Golden Gal just feels more like a visualiser - but I don't think there are any that are invalid per se.
(also on that note, kinda feel like the Prester John and Walker music vids have the costumes the wrong way round thematically. The otherworldy priestlike robes + fantastical makeup seem like they would fit better with the dramatic rocker about an ancient mythical religious figure set in a dark and mysterious woodland; same with humble painter-type overalls and the more down-to-earth song set in a bright and clean collage environment)

The digital mix of Homies is so sad to me. That muddy vinyl rip is so good mix-wise. Anyone else feel this way or is it just demoitis?

nah its not just you. digital mix feels like it blatantly misses the theme of the vinyl only mix, maybe even on purpose, as it heโs trolling. could make sense considering โa day with the homiesโ being vinyl only is kinda like a man cave / no girls allowed thingโฆ he ended up letting girls allowed but trolled them by making the manโs cave boyโs fort lame

Vinyl version of Sunset might be my favorite panda ever honestly. Close at least. Digital Sunset? pretty good still but not quite the same for sure.
A digital rip of the vinyl might be better than digital honestly. But I don't like dislike the digital, it's fine for other songs like first track

Bad faith interpretation of lyrics is a bridge too far for me, just shut the fucking hell up if you're even considering going there
I'll go as far to beg you to stop posting, jesus fucking christ
Breath bro, it'll be alright. It's not bad faith lyric interpretation buddy, it's whats on the fucking record. It doesn't work and aged really poorly in that it's immediately recognizable as sounding like a slur accentuated by the performance of the line. This is a shit topic that will go no where for sure. It's best to drop it. But i stand by that shit.
But speaking of poor vocal performances, i think buoys vocals actually sounded good, but the "oooh" at the beginning blows so hard. I really like how cranked turned out on the record though, and i wasnt too high on that one live.

Probably Avey Tare getting that Panda jerk to play drums on Spirit.
Nah but I think The Painters EP is probably the low point of the band. Peacemaker is ok though. I'm mad theycalled that song "Kinda Bonkers".

Kinda Bonkers is a bone thrown to the kinda soft core rave head mpp noob heads who THINK they have a deep appreciation for ac. I'm happy for them that Bonkers exists
Rest of Painters owns and if you add Gnip Hounds it's like a small, strange album that is comparable to PW proper

ya it's not a "bad faith interpretation," it's literally what i thought he was saying when i was a teenager and it made me super uncomfortable until i saw someone clarify on here what he's actually saying. i remember googling it because i was like "there's no way that's the lyrics." it can definitely be dropped because it's beating a dead horse but like, chill
Also im on the same page re: buoys vocals, the "ooooh!" makes me cringe every time which sucks because i love that song
