Hello all, new in town.
For the past year or so I've been obsessed with the music AC likes and is inspired by. It's mostly a distraction and something to eat up my time while waiting for their music to come out. I realize creating a spreadsheet of this stuff will probably strike many of you as overkill. I'll take all the help I can get. Maybe we could figure out formatting and all that.

Isn't there a huge list of bands that the band stated they were influenced by on some website? Is that what you are talking about?

Yeah, it's the SPIN article. The Cenitpedia. I'm on my phone and too lazy to search for it.
Although I think that article might be focused specifically on those artists that influenced CHz...maybe? Either way still a pretty huge list of their influences.

That article casts a pretty wide net, including movies and non-musical stuff. Certainly don't think it's reason to abandon this, especially since there's plenty of stuff not included in the article.

This is a good idea, I've probably discovered more music thanks to AC than any other band and it'd be good to catalogue it all for newcomers.
I remember Noah saying he liked the album "Music and Dreams" by Robert Lester Folsom.
There's also the year-end guest lists they did for Pitchfork a couple of times.

That Robert Lester Folsom album is amazing too!
I think something that would be helpful would be looking up any records that Pavement also name-checked in interviews in the 90s, as AC has stated that they got into a lot of bands this way.

To what degree should we qualify entries here? I think there are some artists (i.e. Black Dice, Madlib, Ariel Pink, Gang Gang Dance) where we can probably safely assume they like the entire catalog of. Where do we draw the line on inclusion?

I'm still amazed when i read interviews with the band and it seems like they've listened to every goddamn record that's ever been released.
For all we know Geologist could be the world's biggest Slayer fan or something. We'll never know everything.

In that Eye interview they talk a little about being into black metal, burzum in particular.

I was next to dave and brian during the guided by voices set at pitchfork in 2011 and they sang along to every song.
not sure about slayer, but I know he's a Boris fan.
also pretty sure noah's on record saying he doesn't really listen to much music

I always find it extremely weird when a musician says they don't listen to much music.
In general I've found I prefer what Brian, Dave and Josh are into more than what Noah usually talks about (stuff like Actress, Gang Gang Dance, Basement Jaxx etc...).

Also The Residents seem to be a pretty noticeable influence, just looking at ODDSAC and some of the early stuff. Plus Josh talks about Duck Stab in that Spin article.
Also, do you have the source of where Dave talks about Disco Inferno?
