never got the hate for father time. honestly, i think it is due to its placement on the album. I was listening to a playlist of Chz-era tracks following the 2011 live setlist that I made, and it works well right after another a hyped-up number (Today's Supernatural), rather than Wide Eyed, which works best as an opener imo, but Moonjock is a better opener than it, which makes Wide Eyed have a weird placement on the actual album. I kind of think the 4 new songs don't fit that well with the ones that were originally written, I would have more enjoyed them on a follow-up ep with that extra Pandy track. It's kinda like the FBK/MPP songs; same structure/musical techniques but they harness a completely different vibe. a Moonjock/Applesauce/Pulleys/Amanita ep would have slayed.
Sorry this turned into a bit of a ramble. Just stoned and thinking about why i don't like this album more. I love all of the tracks individually, but haven't loved the album like the others

Father Time is groovy and mellow and hypnotic and all these wonderful descriptions which makes it a good song. All of AC songs are stellar and it's hard to find one that isn't bad.

lol no that is phrased incorrectly, it implies every song that AC has made is bad. a funny goof.

Love the production on Father Time. One of the only tracks on CHz that doesn't sound cluttered. The drums are clear. The bassline is groovey. Vocals are catchy. Geo's samples are perfectly placed. What's not to love?

I first listened to this album the same day I first listened to Strawberry and Merriweather, so it was really jarring for me. I remember not liking it much at first. I later listened to it with my best friend (who also never really liked it) and we both had this revelation that it was actually good haha. I cannot listen to the album all the way anymore tho. When I do, I find myself just getting so tired of Aveys voice by the time Mercury Man comes on.
I think the album as a whole is average, while there are some great songs on there, there are also some not so great songs. Personally, I think New town is the worst. The biggest issue is that its way too long. If I actively think "wow when the heck is this song gonna end" then you know its too long haha. Six minutes isnt really that long for an AC song, but the song wasnt interesting enough to make me want to listen for six whole minutes. As for the rest of the album, Aveys voice gets really annoying about halfway through. I dont think theres enough variation in the intensity and how he delivers throughout, its all just way too much for me!
About Father Time, my best friend really dislikes that song, but I really enjoy it. The music is really cool, it sounds like a relaxing beach vacation or something. And the lyrics are nice too, but, something about the way he sings it puts me off a bit and prevents me from saying its the best.
The best songs, I think, are Moonjock, Wide Eyed, and Amanita. Moonjock is just really fun and exciting. The ending is one of the best sections theyve done, with the moving background notes and Aveys breathy vocals. Deak's voice is really lovely, and Wide Eyed is really soothing. The way he sings "whats the change for the better..." is especially wonderful. Amanita is just a powerful song, and I love how it starts with the heavy bass. The lyrics are fantastic, especially in the last half. Its a wonderful album end!

New Town might be my favorite in terms of the sonic atmosphere and sounds in general, and like counter punctual stuff and the timbres. I used to think the melody/lyrics were too simple but it's just like the foundation for them to do really sweet instrumental stuff, and avey's keyboard kills it. Plus the break/drop thing that happens "Out of my body, out of my...mind" destroys me, and then the rhythm get's kinda fucked and I get destroyed again.
And yeah Father Time is great obvs. So I was thinking how on the last forum we poll'd the best track on Chz, and somehow Amanita won. Sweet song but I think that's fucked up. Like, to me it's kind of obvious that Applesauce is the best. TS comes close for me, but it seems like Apple is just the clear winner here. I almost burned out on it cuz I used to play it on my keyboard like constantly, but it's still just like the best. Right?

i would agree, except it ties with NTB for me. Applesauce is the purest pop tune and is just classic Avey nailing it
so ya, its at the top

Still wish Avey's piano stuff on Applesauce was louder in the mix.

^ya it'd be cool to hear a stipped-down piano-centric version too, spirit style. Hearing that acoustic Pulleys and Wide Eyed make one realize how many different directions their songs could go. Wish I could hear infinite versions...

I can see why some people might get burned out by the time they reach it on the album, but I still think Mercury Man is one of the best songs on here if not the best. It was my favorite in the boots and probably my favorite on the album as well. The keyboard rhythm Avey plays sounds really tight to me, the chord changes are dramatic and awesome, and Panda goes absolutely nuts on the drums. Emotional lyrics and vocal delivery, especially in the ending, and to me out of all the songs on the album it hits the concept they were going for on CHz the best.
New Town Burnout is one of my favorites too. The warped synths are really atmospheric and those huge chords (I believe Deakin triggers them when they play it live?) are so amazing. And yeah, the climax. I get chills.
Father Time is pretty good too, I really like what Deakin's doing on his guitar in that song (I assume its a guitar?). Applesauce is great too, like you guys have said its classic Avey and he nails it. I still have trouble getting into Todays Supernatural though, I really like the "Today feels so supernatural" part and everything leading up to it, but the bulk of the song doesn't wow me or anything. I like it but its probably my least favorite personally, still waiting for it to grow on me more.
All in all I really love this album though. I'm kind of making assumptions here but it seems to me like its their most collaborative album to date, with all 4 members firing on all cylinders. I can understand why some aren't into it, and to be honest even I have a hard time listening to the whole thing sometimes because its just so much. Almost like a sensory overload. Maybe it could've been paced a little better, I dunno. But I like the sounds and themes they went for here, it has a lot of great emotional moments, and I don't really dislike any of the songs on the album, so its a winner in my books.

Mercury Man was tied for fave in boots with TS and I still love it. I associate Merc, TS, Honeycomb and Apple for some reason and those are prbly my favorite. They all share this hyper-kinetic pop vibe that I think they just totally nailed.
But yeah I remember the petaluma boot, when Merc blasts in after the tubby sample, I think it brought me to tears at least once early on. Like the melody is kind of painfully sincere and reminds me of Annie (the musical), but that wasn't even it, it was just such a good vibe with the keys and drums. Also remember the end had different lyrics "To live with someone, in the heart of nowhere..." and I didn't like that too much, but now that's one of the peaks on the record with the new lyrics and the descending, super epic bass.
And the night the Petaluma show happened the first clip that got posted was a tiny 45 seconds of TS, and at the end of it the "sometimes you gotta go get maaaaaa-aaaa-aa-aaad" part happened and it felt like someone punched me in the gut, I was so amped on it. Love that song, weird that that was almoset exactly 3 years ago, feeling nostalgia i suppose

Yeah, that and Panda being behind a full kit, man I was so psyched. I remember I only allowed myself to listen to Rosie Oh/Crimson boot at first, trying to avoid spoiling myself, and I really fell in love with those songs. But eventually I gave in and listened to the whole thing, hahaha.

Yea, I remember really liking Applesauce the first time I heard it, even before I warmed up to the rest of the album. But gosh I just burnt myself out on it!
You guys make me want to listen to New Town again and try to listen more carefully. Its been a while since Ive heard it anyway. Ill probably pick up a lot of things I dont remember.
And yea Im totally not surprised that Amanita won that poll haha

omg ballpark I kind of forgot that the encore was the Rosie Oh/Crimson 1-2 punch... taking me back
songs like Crimson and Gotham especially seemed like such new vibes/new territory for the band. Only old names I can remember now are Change, Let Go/Shaker, Long Time Ago and Frights. And they did tweaked out Bro Sport, Summertime and We Tigers. It felt like so much of a jungle vibe back then during the first shows

And that live version of Did You See the Words as well! I'm glad they left a snippet of that transition at the end of the album version of Todays Supernatural, always takes me back to how excited I felt while listening to the CHz boots.

still kinda bummed about the whole rosie oh-crimson thing not happening on the album. also bummed that honeycomb and gotham didnt make the cut, those are the best songs from the centipede era
centipede is like the tomboy of ac albums. really cool and good enough, but certain decisions keep it from being a classic

I'm realizing that this is one of the busier albums i've ever heard. There is sooo much going on, so much sample triggering. I guess it's pretty ambitious in that way. I think Moonjock and TS really use this quality well. I wish the rest of the songs used that saturation better. Just relistening to TS after a while, I think it's one of AC best songs, and miles ahead of the other songs on CHz
