Yeah dude really enjoyed reading that, I remember your massive post on CHZ too which was equally awesome, love reading people go into that much detail about what they like about certain music.

I think it's safe to say that the record vibes totally differently than other popular recent LA records (the new xiu xiu, the 2010 liars album)

Interesting how an 'LA vibe' is being felt here, but I can't really relate to this being from Toronto. Though, I will say I have always had a fascination with that particular vibe and how its related to countless music, and pop culture throughout history. I always dream about moving there too, but im not that crazy.
There's some good discussion food here: what is the LA sound? and how do we hear it in Slasher House?
I think the LA sound is hard to pinpoint, because its kinda like a melting pot. Artists from all over come to LA and influence the vibe in many different ways. So generally speaking, I think the 'sound' could be influenced by the mythical like setting of LA, which is imbued with its own ghosts and legends. Maybe the sound can be defined more broadly defined as a dichotomy of light/dark. Think the opening scene from Blue Velvet.
I'm guessing that you can hear it in the simultaneously dark/sunny sounds that Avey has been very apt to make since the beginning.
Side note: I woke up with Strange Colores in my head. I work out the lyric to be:
"Soft color, bright color, yellow color, some are mellow"
FUCKIN' love this song right now, "night's just like you would have in day(?)" I love how it sounds like blaring horns. And the drums are so gooood.

All those things you pointed out as having some trace of that LA aesthetic I agree with, especially the synth lines at the beginning of Outlaw. Those sound like taking the 10 to LAX for a red eye flight or something. And I get some kind of Cali/skater feeling on Blind Babe and Strange Colores. I was thinking whatever this sound is, if its a real thing, I think it was present in Down There too, like he was headed that way already. Mostly on Oliver Twist but Hieroglyphic too. And I heard it in Sometimes and Slow Words kinda too, might just be crazy though.
And I remember Avey was saying he dug that Ann Steele album and I hear that on here I think, mostly on Modern Days E, like in the way that song almost sounds funny, the harmony in the beginning with the down pitched voice makes me laugh, but it sounds so good too. And that sonic punch of the chorus sounds so bright and fast.

PioneerPreserve, I know right? Catchy is my favourite right now, love the brazilian rhythms in the chorus and the post chorus part--i have no idea what the lyrics are there.
The Outlaw is creeping on me though. "The Future" part is really rockin'. I'm so glad I didn't listen to the boots!!
yeah I knowwww! Catchy was contagious just gives me these warm vibes, haven't felt that way about an AC song so much since Feels/MPP. and it feels so good, that chorus takes me to a different mind-state!
I'm also digging on the Outlaw too, it's another highlight from the album that just shifts around and takes me on a journey. especially that first verse, maaaaaan. I love the vocal effects Dave's using on some of these tracks, just like morphing morphing indecipherable. stoked on this guys!

i bet we'd get really varied responses if everyone posted there current 3 favorite in their next post..
catchy
modern daze e
your card
(sorry duplex trip) the first two of these make me laugh and they're light and funny but also so good and they're just like really well built songs (catchy chorus makes me melt). And Your Card gives me the best imagery of any of them, I picture a lot of purple smoke pluming everywhere and like weird transmutation circles and a stormy beach.. and fire. If I knew Duplex lyrics better I think I'd like it more. The vocal harmony during the final part of it is so nice

My favorites at this moment are A Sender, The Outlaw, and Modern Daze E. I've already talked about my love for A Sender in other posts, its just fantastic. The Outlaw is top notch as well, love the drumming on it and it has a really great atmosphere. Like some others have mentioned its vaguely Modest Mouse-ish in some way. And Modern Daze E is the catchiest song on here IMO, awesome drumming and great backing vocals by Angel and the song in general is just well built. I don't mind not being able to understand most of the lyrics on this album but not being able to figure out what Avey's saying during the "All I ever wanted to do..." section really bugs me because its so damn catchy!

Really enjoying the discussion in these last several posts. One thing that absolutely stands out to me with all these songs is definitely, as mentioned before, the sheer unpredictability and dynamism of each song. From a songwriting and compositional standpoint, this sounds like some of Dave's best work to me. The combination of guitar, keys, drums and effects reminds me so much of Spirit, but with the aggressive rocking energy that Centipede had. Current favs are A Sender, Blind Babe and That It Won't Grow, though I have a feeling that Roses on the Window will replace one of these whenever it shows up.

Thanks aziza for expanding and somewhat validating our thoughts about the 'LA vibe'-ness of the record. You make some great points!
Funny that you mention this. I have the exact same thought, but I hear it more so in the verses for Blind Babe.
Man, I just feel completely spoiled by this album so far. Either that or I must be spoiling myself by compulsively listening to it. Here's my top three according to itunes plays:
Strange Colores (most listened to, but not one that hooked me right away)
Duplex Trip (staccato notes in this song remind me of one of my favourite avey songs Unsolved Mysteries)
Blind Babe (wildest track)

(speaking of that song, please tell me I'm not the only one who hears this Jane's Addiction sound in the chorus. That would make this the obligatory roll down Sunset Blvd. a la the Entourage theme song hahah)

can we talk about that awesome part in Blind Babe, where Avey is singing 'does she feel it?' and Angel comes in and sings this totally dissonant harmony overtop that sounds like she's singing on a completely diff song? Yeah, that awesome part. Takes the song to another level.
Edit: I like the quiet part of That it Won't Grow a lot too

aziz love yr post and i agree with a lot of that, I also get kind of a 90s underground vibe from this. It's probably just me projecting my own music tastes, but the really upbeat/crazy stuff (Your Card, The Outlaw, Blind Babe) reminds me of TFUL282.
and as foxtrot said, there aren't so many dynamics between tracks because the tracks are so dynamic themselves, gone is the more structured Chz style and Avey's back to just writing killer hook after killer hook

when I think of one album that encapsulates the more breezy/smooth/sheen aspect of what someone might think of with the "L.A" sound or w/e I generally think of Aja by Steely Dan. I think that's here in some sense, but in a more muddy, fucked up way. in some ways it sounds like a punk drummer playing along to some warped Steely Dan tapes. in a very vague way.
edit: but I dont really put much credence to L.A relating to this album very much though.I don't know.

only two songs im not that into are duplex trip and the outlaw. I was never into the bootleg version of roses on the window so we'll see about that.
this album is my favorite AC release since fall be kind. A sender is just incredible, pure avey
also, this is a very "bassy" album, all the basslines are groovy and great, they really remind me of of montreal

Changed my vote from The Outlaw to A Sender. One of the freshest things dave's written and honestly just a fuckin' good song.

^Yeah, I also like the bridge part later "there's a song that I know". And the first chorus-y part of Outlaw with the whispery delicate vibe and the cool synths, that part is so fucking nice. makes me feel the breeze, heavy though
what if avey pulled a tarantino and cornpilled the album and we never got to hear Roses. The fact that Roses is still missing is nagging me and making me feel guilty for enjoying this so much.... Sorry Avey

I wonder if the sound of this record is any kind of reflection of his relationship with Angel?
I'm not really into prying into ACs personal lives but I think it's quite interesting that Dave made PR when he was with Kria and then has gone and made this with Angel. It is interesting too that DT felt like such a solitary album but his release feels very pro-social or something.

the one thing i don't like on this album is the part of Your Card thats like "some people are naked, some people etc"
the melody and lyrics both are a bit cheesy, and the melody sounds very familiar

I also hear "Some people can't make it," not naked sort of, could be either. That part is really weird but I like it for some reason, it's this really catchy simple melody but the background gets so tense and then it turns into that amazing jam

dam the few blind babe verse lyrics i can decipher are super relate-able and emotional
"u wouldnt even look me in the eyes
but i wanna know what ?? inside your mind"
ugghghhhgh does she feel it?
does she feel it??!!?!!

right good call
the background is definitely awesome and sneaky, and the jam it turns into is amazing. i guess i just have to get past the simplicity of that melody, let it grow on me (but it won't grow...)
other than that though this album's fucking awesome

That's the only part on the album I haven't been able to fully get into so far. Probably because I thought it was "some people get naked" as well.
