The box that he's touching is an Eventide pedal, although I can't say which one. I'd guess the Pitchfactor since his new songs don't use excess delay or reverb. The rackmount with XLR ins and outs looks like another effects module to me.

I'm buying an SP-404 off of Craigslist today. So excited to mess around with it.

(Sorry that this is not completely relevant to this thread)

For sure. I've only had the chance to toy with it for a few hours and have already created some really wacky sounds. I should have the chance to post something this weekend.

nice to see someone else found the elektronika flanger!
i found out it was that one like 3 years ago by e-mailing the effects database dude that picture and he got back to me saying that was the unit. every now and then i check ebay and find one but they're not that easy to come by with 1/4" jack replacements. i always figured he used that on some of his vocals.

These seem like the gear to get. I posted in the other gear thread that both avey and panda use them as well as thom Yorke (most of the atoms for peace record is on one of these guys called the machine drum) and I saw mgmt using one on a late night performance. I'm guessing there's a ton more people using them as well. I would love to get my hands on one but they go for 800 used. You can kinda tell the drums for the principle real are done on a sequencer.

Does anyone think domino is forcing Panda to put this out this year? I mean the news for the album didn't come with a single. It was just "hey panda bear is making something (that better) come out this yea"r the news seemed a little strange for me considering the title isn't even official

i know for a fact they're not octatracks.... my friend's have a few and they are tiny... THE MYSTERY CONTINUES!!!!
also, avey was using an octatrack on the DT solo shows, not whatever you guys said earlier....

EDIT: after checking elektron's site, they could be the new Analog Rytm machine... bigger, better, has drum pads...

What sort of sampler would you folks recommend investing in? Nothing too crazy expensive.

Guys, some dude offered me to trade his Dr Sample 303 for this OD pedal I've got. I recently got an AKAI MPX8, pretty basic sampler. Is the Dr Sample a lot better? I'm new into sampling and electronics altogether, been solely a guitar player for a long time. THX.

They're cheap, which is sweet, but it's also been a major hassle in that I've gone through four of them. The 404s look sweet, and Brian from the band has one and seems to be psyched on it, so maybe I'll go for two of those. I liked how the things led me into a new way of writing and performing, even though it was slow in coming. I have to say, I was inspired to use one when I read that Madlib used one. This was after The Unseen came out. I feel like it's only fair to mention him, as I wouldn't be using one if it weren't for him. I remember him saying, too, that they were simple, but if you worked a little you could get a lot out of them, and I'd say he's totally right.

I also recall him saying something to the effect of them being hard to load samples onto

Thanks Fovrodi. I stumbled upon that pitchfork piece when the deal was offered... I think what I need is to get a lot more into my actual sampler and see where its shortcomings are. I'd like to use these things live, fwiw.

I would offer this advice: I sold my SP-404 because it didn't have velocity-sensitive pads, something that the 303 doesn't have either. So if that's important to you, I would factor that in. They're still highly versatile and useful instruments, but the pads are a far cry from something like an MPC.

Kind of crazy to think that without Madlib, PB's musical trajectory (and as a result, AC's) would have been quite different. Of course, he probably would have heard about samplers from another artist, but it's just interesting to think "what if?" with these kind of things.

The MPX8 has both velocity and pressure-sensitive pads and I like that a lot. I think I will use the little guy until I have a wider understanding of how to use samplers/loopers before GASing for the 48th time.

I believe instruments definitely shape your ideas. The quack of my stratocaster leads me to playing certain stuff that I don't think about when holding other guitars, for instance.

Panda also said he was bummed he had unwillingly led to the huge promotion of SPs.

Let's just say, theoretically, that BOSS has probably made more off of panda bear using SPs than Panda bear has using them.

V true, I'm way more comfortable on my Tele than most guitars. It's not necessarily a good or bad thing, sometimes to get the desired results you have to get outside your comfort zone, but I'd def agree that gear affects aspects of your playing, often in subconscious ways

Hadn't heard this before, interesting. One the one hand, it's surprising, because I wouldn't think that the majority of fans are obsessive enough to actually find out what gear PB uses. But on the other hand, when an artist is unique as PB or AC, they always inspire tons more copycats than your typical rock band might.

I find that very hard to believe. Link?
