had a shit last night.. it was an immaculate conception; the ben allen of turds. all the shit was in the right place, perfect mixure... i kept it on the mantle. that is, until stan showed up.
"gimme the allen," he said with a brash confidence. "you don't want to know what I will do.."
"well why don't you, :dolewitit.jpg:
the crowd goes wild, anco pops bottles, abd everyone gets blowjobs.

I'll be happy to see them harmonize and be more interactive with each other live again. CHz felt so fragmented.

Ehh I see how you could get that, but it still gels so nice. CHz is the one where geo really shines. He makes it all so much smoother.. and I still maintain panda just didn't feel like singing much on this one cuz of drums and tomboy

I would love to see them record something with no effects but instead use different environments with a multitude of sonic qualities.

Realistically, I think the next album is going to be tropical and garage-y as fuck.

i'd actually love to see them do something like this. avey and panda vocals only with geo looping/sampling them LIVE on the fly, deakin also singing maybe doing some very minimalist guitar shit. maybe pitch shift some of the vocal layers down/up to get bass parts or high pitched frequency pushing stuff. but the dudes can sing AND do excellent sound effects shit with their voices, check out sung tongs boots to see what I mean. LAYERS bro. I would love to see this and i think being stripped of most of their toys would make some purer jams.

also I'm late to this but I think stanshalls review was pretty much right on the money. I think ac have reached the point where they feel capable of creating of just about any sound they can think of, which is sweet, but they overused that ability big time on this album and it's the sound of everything and the kitchen sink to a T, there is just too much sound happening, period.

what i like about chz is how minimal and spacey it is and how smart ben allen is for forcing the band to change the sound and refusing to let stanishall produce the album cuz heh would have make album with 10.12 pitchfork rating and invernt time travel and go kill hitler

The problem with CHZ isn't "too much sound", there's plenty of music that's more dense and layered without having the same issues. It's just a matter of certain sounds not working/fitting with the music (sometimes things buried in the mix can be distracting, but not in a good way imo) and diluting the effect of the tracks. It seems like I have this complaint less often than a lot of other people here though.

if no one pointed shit out like this and people just listened to music without the internet's commentary a lot less people would have noticed any fault in the production. at least i wouldnt have. im gonna stay away from reading peoples quarrels about future albums until i can form my own concrete opinion

Criticism is inevitable though, especially over a year after its release. If other opinions tamper with your listening experience then it's probably best to not read through threads like this, if you haven't formed a full opinion yet. Because the purpose of this thread is to discuss what we like and dislike about the album.

all the pleasure to ya on that, i wasnt actually trying to say "dont point out criticisms". im just talking about myself mostly, like i didnt even know what production was until i came here so i would probably love CHz unconditionally if stanshall and the like hadnt enlightened me on the value of production. ignance iz bliss

yeah that's another way of looking at it. some of the 'sound effecty' stuff just really doesn't sit well with me at all. They said they sampled like mainstream radio bumper soundeffect shit right though? because that would explain a lot that's about as obnoxious as you can get sound effects wise.
I don't mean to be a bummer, I don't really see the band as GENIUSES like I did 5 - 6 years ago anymore anyways. But i feel like it's just plainly obvious the muse wasn't with them this time. And I don't think its Ben Allen's fault either (though his clean style wasn't really a good fit for these songs) Mpp was almost as dense and he did an amazing mixing job giving everything it's own space on that. the percussion on that sounds incredible especially, but never ever gets in the way of anything else. quite the juggling act.
anyways *shrugs* these guys have made enough great music I will give them the benefit of the doubt and always check out the new thing but chz left a bad taste in my mouth. the formula needs to be majorly fucked with next time around, and my hope is they go for a 'less is more' approach.

I see your point but I disagree. Once I learned to let go and stop internally critiquing the mix, the sounds, etc. and just enjoy CHz for what it is, I loved it! This is what they gave us. It's not up to us to make those decisions. CHz is their piece of art and this is the way they intended us to hear it. Relax and get lost in human pleasure!

The only problem with 'just take it all in and enjoy it for what it is' is that it reduces all experience to the exact same level.
I initially thought CHz was half good half crap, then I listened to it loads and basically forced myself to like it. Then I just didn't listen to it for about a year and then wrote this re-review. It's about half good/great, in my opinion. MPP was almost all great. Almost everything they'd done before that was life-changing for me. I've already accepted that I may be 'over' the band, and I'm a bit sad about that, they meant almost everything to me at one point. I guess I'll never feel that again about them but hey, I have the memories, it was wonderful and I still love most of their music.
CHz is a fairly weak (for them) collection of songs produced in a way that smothers them in ephemera. It's as hard to get past the production as it is to enjoy the melodies and energy as much as Feels or Strawberry Jam or HCTI. They just aren't there to the same degree! Reducing it to 'just chill out and enjoy it' doesn't help because, well, some things move you more than others. None of the production stuff would really matter if the songs were stronger. Hey, I think the MPP production is equally destructively maximalist (compared to the absolute life-changing wonder of the pre-album boots) but the songs are about one imperial fuck tonne better than CHz, so it seldom bothers me, unless I listen to any boots and imagine what could have been.
