Noah’s harmonic sensibility = more John
Noah’s melodic sensibility = more Paul
Noah’s timbre = definitely more Paul
Noah’s drumming = obvs Ringo, understatement as the statement
Noah’s sense of humor = dry George all the way

In conclusion Noah is actually all of the Beatles in the band.

Dave is Lindsey Buckingham.
Josh is actually also George.
Brian is Patrick Star a la “is mayonnaise an instrument.”

Can some legend link me to the video or recording of Beach Boys' All I Wanna Do with Panda's Guy's Eyes vocals over it. That blend was beautiful. Saw it on youtube hella years back but can't find it now.

I’ve noticed that in Sinister Grift’s lyrics, certain images and phrases recur across different songs. I find this really fascinating, and I believe I read in an interview that this was a deliberate choice — almost like an Easter egg approach, or perhaps simply a way to create a consistent atmosphere, mood, or narrative setting.

But more than that, I think these repeated lines are often used in contrast, to emphasize how the main character’s perspective shifts throughout the album. Here are a few examples I noticed — not sure if you’ve spotted any others:

“My heart, it bends before it breaks” – Praise
“Come and try to bend, I'll break it” – Ferry Lady

“And in a place close by I'll occupy” – Anywhere
“This place I can't occupy” – Defence

“Engine's running, I can feel the miles” – 50mg
“And when my motor stalls / Get the engines” – Ends Meets

“Looking to blame, naming the name” – 50mg
“I'm getting tired of saying the name” – Venom In

“Stiff wind on the street, pull the jacket in” – Ferry Lady
“Wind at my back, keep it on track” – 50mg

“Wind at my back, keep it on track” – 50mg
“Looking but I can't find my track” – Ferry Lady

What do you think?

What do you think?

I remember when I saw the interview Deakin and Panda did a while back where Panda said that he didn't include Virginia Tech on the album because he didn't want to change the track list. This is likely why. I think other people have said this, but Ferry Lady is the bridge between the sunnier first half and the darker second half and I think that's why you see all of those callbacks in that song.

I don't think this is the first time he's done this sort of thing, although this is definitely the most developed it's gotten. For example,

"This dog got bit on a leg" - Mr. Noah
"My God, my God that dogs got a broken leg" - Butcher Baker

Yeah, just got it today. Its really beautiful. I'm usually good with voices, but it seems that Cass' and Noah's voice sound super close. It could be that its just me being confused, but I think Cass sings the main vocals on the demo and Noah comes in to harmonize on the chorus. The singing is softer and the chorus is sung higher, more choir-like. I'll try to rip it onto youtube if no one else does.

Edit: Actually met Cass today and asked him about Venom's In 7" demo. Its indeed him singing the song with Noah backing up on the chorus.

I wonder if the Defense lyrics "Nothing left to do, but to hang my head and cry" is an ode to S.E. Rogie's "My Lovely Elizabeth" lyric "Now I scarcely do know what to do, but to hang my head and cry"
I think it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDO_o-w9vj0&t=29s

marmoacolazionereloaded, cool post. I definitely picked up on the repeated phrases on the album and have been trying to make sense of it. I like that lyrical style, makes the whole album feel like a more cohesive statement/mood/energy.

Thanks, man.
Great reference — the S.E. Rogie one. I really love him, and I got to know his music thanks to Noah.
A guy on Reddit also pointed out this comparison:

“Looking at the steps untaken” — Ferry Lady
“Steps that are taken, rules that are breaking” — Venom In

Which I think is ultra cool — especially if it somehow connects with Step by Step too.
I remember reading an interview with Noah where he said that he originally thought the lyrics were about COVID, but later realized they were actually about the changes happening in his life. (A divorce, maybe?)

Wonderful set. I adore this album.

Probably no surprise to anyone here that I've been diagnosed with autism and ADHD as an old c*** (44) but I think it'd influenced my relationship with AC over the years, in terms of rigidity and fulfilled/unfulfilled expectations and stuff. I love this band so much, and this forum, and the opportunity to discuss/proselytise how I feel about the band. Then Internet is changing, it's changed so much, and I'll be forever grateful for what we've been able to share here in such an open and intimate venue.

Sending lots of love to you all. I didn't tell anyone else about this shit apart from my wife and best mates because...well, because...

It is a completely different song at this point. Guys' Eyes doesn't have that "almost got me" part or that faster and louder "let go, if I can stop it" part and (the new version of) Song For Ariel is missing the "and I use my hand" part. Both songs start the same way but go in completely different directions.

<3 thanks for sharing and trusting us, you are valued in the community :) your post sounds like you're doing some self-reflecting, hope you're not taking the diagnosis as any change to you as a person. you're still you and that's great, the "label" only serves to frame and assist with self-understanding and self-love

The email they sent about the performance describes Song for Ariel as "unreleased" instead of identifying it as an alternate version of Guys Eyes. It would be cool if this means we finally get a studio version of it, but regardless it's a very funny thing to read about a song that's existed for 18 years

The idea of an ep with Song for Ariel along with what was basically confirmed as a studio re-record of Never Ending Game is so exciting to me. Those might be my favorite solo tracks Noah has ever made.

But even if Song for Ariel never gets the studio record, I really love how it’s been a song he’s played for nearly 20 years now. It’s ever evolving and perfect. Guys Eyes is my all time favorite from the band too and I feel so lucky that I have heard so many iterations of it.

gosh that would be SO cool. Would love an EP full of studio, alternative versions of existing songs that he plays live with the SG treatment

Something like

NEG
Virginia Tech
Song for Ariel
Inner Monologue
Tomboy
Preakness 3.0 (4.0 if you count the motorik demo, which is kind of a combo of Tomboy + Crosswords versions)

Take Pills, Slow Motion, Buoys, Sequential Circuits, Selfish Gene, Shepard Tone, and Jetty are other options but I feel like none of these are remarkably different in their SG tour versions... but all would slap with studio versions.

ugh, now I want this for, like, all AC-related records. The radio recordings are great, keep playing on the radio, guys

the tiny desk was really cool. hearing noah sing totally raw is such an unusual treat, and I loved hearing him climb to those high notes in ferry lady with such ease. the BVs really shined too. Tome and Tim are rock solid in the rhythm section. pb's guitar tone is kind of a lot in this context of more gentle renditions of the songs lol. defense is cool to hear, but suffers a little without the studio-fullness and Cindy lee's solo. Song for Ariel really shines, the rise into the loud section is really good, the sample rivka plays into that part is almost like and edm riser which made me laugh but it sounds sick. and the fall back to the quiet groove is so sweet and is the most effective place for the raw vocals, very intimate and cozy feeling.

just three songs is such a tease, I would have loved to hear Praise, 50mg, Just as Well... I guess every song they didn't play would've been sick lol so pointless to say
