Merriweather Post Pavilion is still the greatest album of all time. It never gets old. I just recently recommended it to a friend and they've really embraced it. As a consequence, I've been regularly listening to it again and just discovering it anew. It just always sounds so fresh and brilliant.

The dexterous and richly harmonic melodies and vocal interplay. The complex rhythms that draw on raw tribal and dubby elements as much as crisp synth pop and electronica. The euphoric, sparkling synth textures that give every song a brilliant glow. The clever use of various nature sounds as both rhythmic and melodic elements. The whole thing is just dazzling. I don't think it will ever get old.

Totally agree. Feels like every other year I’m returning to MPP and hearing things in there I’ve never noticed before. Pure magic.

Has anyone picked up the recent Drops of Sun compilation with the second vinyl-only AC track? Curious to hear that one

Talked to Brian and Doug for a couple minutes at the Detroit show tonight, Doug’s record is not quite finished, family stuff got in the way 😥 as we know Brian’s hurdy gurdy record is complete; it’s sitting w Drag City rn, and he’s meeting with them to discuss whether they’re gonna publish/press it tomorrow(? Or soon) but he’s a little nervous as it’s about 6 min too long for a normal LP (or double, I can’t recall). The new songs Brian is playing on tour are from this unreleased LP, outside of one from Shaw Deal

Slightly too long for one LP would make more sense to me. A hurdy gurdy triple album would be crazy, I doubt that's what he'd be asking them to do.

Strawberry Jam has at least one awkward cut between sides, right? Like Winter Wonder Land to Cuckoo Cuckoo? They did it right with Merriweather though, having all the transitioning tracks on the same sides as each other.

I just got this album "towards the shadow" by Wume from 2018, and Deakin (as Josh Dibb) has a co-recording and mixing credit. The band is from baltimore so it makes sense but pretty crazy coincidence I just picked this thing up at random and had never heard of josh's involvement before

the hurdy gurdy record probably isn't too long for a single CD though! #CDtruther

This is extremely old news but just picked up Tangerine Reef on vinyl today (on sale for only £5!) - it sounds incredible and the packaging is really impressive. Would recommend picking it up if you see it at a similar price near you. A really underrated record that was my closest friend during the lockdown COVID months.

the strawberry jam record does have its one unique cut between wwl and cuckoo since it's a double LP, to this day i don't understand why they didn't just bite the bullet and split up FRG and fireworks and press it on one LP for a lean 21/23 minute split. feels silly to have a second LP with a collective 16 minutes of music on it lol

i know this has certainly been talked about plenty and the answer is likely just "nope!" but has anyone ever asked dave about "sleeper factory" from the 2004 breezeblock set? it's one of my favorite AC songs and it's so shrouded in mystery—only ever played that one time, yet it sounds like a fully realized song (though admittedly it doesn't sound like it took very long to write). was it written specially for that set the way happy singing band is theorized to have been for the other music set? was it a candidate track for prospect hummer (this feels especially likely to me because it was performed the month prospect hummer was recorded)? just so curious about this perfect little ghost of a song. perfectly content with the breezeblock recording being the one and only version because it's a perfect performance in excellent quality, but hungry to spoil the aura and learn a cold hard fact or two about the tune hehe

I have it up on soulseek but didn’t have it up and running, I’ll try to do it in the next hour or so and will leave it running—keep an eye out! U/n deleted5959

I know we've done the complaining about Domino thing to death, but Warp just announced Stereolab's first album in 15 years - and it comes out next month!! Would love to see the boys get this kind of treatment.

Not sure if anyone else already noticed this, but Geo plays hurdy gurdy on a track from this upcoming album by Stephen Vitiello, Brendan Canty (who was the drummer in Fugazi) and Hahn Rowe. He plays on the closing track but the first single out now is really good

https://balmat.bandcamp.com/album/second

Here's a bit from Philip Sherburne's newsletter about how he ended up on the album
wrote:
And then Geologist is on one track.

That was a nice coincidence. We were recording in a studio that Brendan likes in the DC area, Tonal Park, and he said, “Brian from Animal Collective is in the building, if we have a track that’s in”—I think it was C—“and you want hurdy gurdy, he’ll come in.” He didn’t know me or who I was, but he knew Brendan. And he listened to one track, which was “Mrphgtrs1,” which at that point was just me, and pretty much nodded his head, sat down, and played hurdy gurdy for the straight 10 minutes of the raw track, said, “That was cool,” and left. I love these chance encounters. Again, somebody I admire, a group I admire—that was an unexpected gift.

Well that's fucking cute

The real answer re: Strawberry Jam is just not to bother with pressing to vinyl at all if they obviously didn't sequence with it in mind

Although wasn't that one of their only albums that they recorded totally analogue or something? How ironic if so. Between that and Person Pitch, 2007 was kind of a funny year of them demonstrating how much of an afterthought vinyl LPs were for them, when it came to sequencing

My girlfriend thinks Ark is a Beck album. I asked if we could play it in the car and when she saw the case she was like “is that beck?” and of course I said yes. I figured once we put it on she’d realize I was messing with her but she just goes “I remember listening to this forever ago but I never realized it was basically just an animal collective album, like do other ppl make this shit too?” I do not plan on telling her the truth
