Funny how we all remember interviews about the record differently

IIRC, the band wasn't contented with the first mix. They consequently mixed the record again, which is probably why Safer sounds so different (and much more in the vein of Feels, i.e., "dry") when it comes to the mix. The final SJ mix uses spatial effects in a way that's unique from the Feels/People/Safer mixes, in addition to the vocals and overall mix sounding clearer and yet harsher. I've attributed the contradiction in the mixing aesthetic to the album theme; both organic and fluid, artificial and abrupt.

IIRC again, the band was also having personal/interpersonal issues. I think Josh spoke in recent years about challenges with identity in the band (or something to that effect). I'd imagine that a close group of friends who make money together being creative are bound to run into issues with one another time and again, so who knows besides them what might have been going on.

Anyhow. I sense that they like the songs? Or most of them? Would be odd to play them live over the years if they didn't.

Good take, agreed

His was arguably more inexcusable, right next to each other on the same album and there's even "what's happening?" in the dialogue at the beginning of What's Going On!

Thanks for bringing him up, I hadn't thought about him in a while. I should listen to his music again.

fhjkaskjh it reminds me of a playlist i saw on spotify of a bunch of his songs whose titles were questions with the title "marvin gaye's clueless ass" gdaklgjg

Lolll this sounds great

Edit: found it

SJ 20th anniversary tour would be bad. I mean it would be good but bad, not the kind of thing I think any of us on this forum want from this band.

at face value it seems like something that would be so amazing but like the day after isn't it now dropped last year everybody was ready for new shit, not more old shit.

(though what do i know everybody, myself included, was geeked about the sung tongs shiz)

Yeah it just is not what I and most of us like about this band and feels inauthentic. I'd be there but it would be hard to shake this feeling. Most album tours with any band kind of sit wrong with me these days.

Sung Tongs always felt like the only one they could really get away with because it's so equipment/duo specific there's really nothing else like it in their catalog. It was very exciting not having been old enough to have seen them the first time around for those songs in their original forms.

Album tours are fine if they are what a band needs to make a profit. I’d prefer new material but would never complain about another anniversary show. While I’m not a big fan of Good News for people who love bad news, I really liked that MM toured that and encored with the EP of material that was written around that time. AC obviously did that too with Sung Tongs and Prospect Hummer. If an SJ tour meant the return of Safer live I can’t imagine anyone here being upset about it.

the sung tongs tour wasn't even for an anniversary they just randomly felt like doing it (maybe because only Avey and Panda had capacity to tour in that moment)

would see a SJ show but doubt it'll happen, seems like the band members are in full solo & side project mode right now

Also, aside from the personal reasons behind that tour and the excellent live record, and the beauty of Noah singing Vashti's parts, as a celebration of that album, I feel that the ultra-epic Pitchfork show could have been a single event.

I agree. (Selfishly cuz that was the only one I went to. I have regret now not going to one of the tour shows for another run through.)

One of my favorite AC-related artworks is Abby’s cover image of Cows on Hourglass Pond. Looking at it tonight, never really made the connection before that the dude on the horse is Dave. But the bucket hat—Ah, there he is.

I remember there was a one sheet press release thing that Dave wrote for that album that had a short story type of prose to it. It mentioned Waylon Jennings and old country music. I wish he included that as an insert to the record, but whatevs.

I'm reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, and there's a bar scene where the main character is chatting away about Russian literature, and then just abruptly shifts:

"Oh, wow, listen, they're playing 'Comfy in Nautica,' do you hear that? Panda Bear! I totally forgot that album. Anyway."

And then it keeps going.

Listening to the Blast Radio Sessions at work this afternoon. I never listened at the time because I didn't want to spoil myself on upcoming tunes. What a treat. There's some really nice dissonance on some of these tracks that I wish carried over to the album-versions. Especially some of the Skiffs tracks. Fun listening regardless though.

From Avey’s stories on Instagram.
Avey will be on the radio station
103.3 Asheville FM at 1 pm today.
Ellicott Hooligan (Avey Tare & members of Sham) will play new releases from various projects of theirs and talk about their many upcoming shows and tours and also will be playing with sounds and stuff on the air, live improv radio performance art.

They haven’t played any music yet, just vibing rn

But they might release an album together. I think Avey said they’ve recorded 7 hours of music together so far

I think they’re playing a track right now actually

Now they’re playing some Geologist

Now they’re doing some improv

Love the laidback glitched version of Broke Zodiac from the Blast sessions

In the show linked on the Shaw Deal thread, they mention that ellicot hooligan has an album coming out. No deets. But it sounded like soonish to me.

In the interview above, the radio host says, “You’re going to Iceland because you’re going to be releasing an album.” Dave just says, “No,” and laughs. But he does say, “We’re putting together a CD for [Iceland]… just to have a first release.” Shane says they recorded like 7 hours of jams.
