has it ever been determined/confirmed if Maya from DJ sets is just remixed from the From a Beach BBC session? or do they have something unreleased (recorded in studio) that they used to make that?

(i guess you'd think if they had something recorded in studio in '08 in the archives it would've been released as part of the 15th anniversary, idk)

hope My Girls b/w From a Beach and Brother Sport b/w Bleed (live) make it to streaming one day. Off the top of my head its strange they're the only things not on streaming aside from Animal Crack Box?

…is it separate? The vocals sound identical. Is it not probably that the BBC multitrack recorded the session and gave Dave the stems?

It's funny how I've only heard like 5 minutes of that preview so far and I'm already thinking "ah, maybe all those people comparing AC to the Beach Boys had a point" lol

I guess I should listen to Smiley Smile at some point.

This! Would love to hear it, but feel like paying for an interview is kinda sleazy.

Shameless self promotion time, but I am the owner of this forum, so I can get away with it: I have a music podcast and I only made it to the 2nd episode before getting into something AC related. I talk about this very cool new music and start trying to compare it to Terrestrial Tones, but then I realize that the comparison really does not hold up at all. It's a fun time! You can listen to it here https://endaural.com/blog/454901.html

How many years since 2000 have passed without at least an EPs-worth of new material being released by the band or one of its members? 2024 seems like it'll be one.

The only thing that came out in 2013 was Doin It Right by Daft Punk. That's the only year that didn't have a real Animal Collective original material release under one of the band members' (or the band's) name (I don't count remix EPs like Monkey Been to Burntown)

Yep, 2013 was the only year without AC+ music. Incredible really.

Half an EP/10 mins of music just barely makes 2024 count, so I get where andthephantom is coming from.

It's looking like Sung Tongs live + Mariachi Reset will be the only AC projects this year. Unless that AC + mystery collab artist EP is coming out this year still?

This has been the first year in a long time where I haven't been impatient for AC music, I must say.

Isn't It Now? was and is still so satisfying, such a brilliant relief of anticipation and everything I could've asked for it to be. It still stuns me how that record ended up sounding, how they nailed each and every song. It's easily my favorite post-00s AC project and one that keeps on giving. I'm in awe of it. Treasure it deeply. It'll always hold a really significant place in my heart; they are a band who means so much to me but I doubted if one of their new records would ever impact me in the same way as their older records... I've found appreciation and fascination in each of their releases, but that genuine authentic passionate love for one of their records hadn't existed since 2009... there were more than enough reasons to believe they'd never capture me like THAT again. And yet they did last year. I'm stlil a bit shaken by the event of it, how it all unfolded. What a painful wait but an incredible goldmine at the end of the journey.

Ever since 2019, there was this impatience in me to hear studio versions of the music they'd debuted, and the pay-off was sweet, getting back to back AC LPs, Panda coming out with a stunner with Pete in 2022 as well, Avey staying solid. 2024 has been the year of appreciation for all that has come -- from an AC standpoint -- as well as of course enjoying the 10s of awesome records coming out by other artists. 2024 has been a great year for music.

But ya, I'm feeling really fine with the idea we might not get another AC album for a few more years. Sinister Grift is going to be right down my alley, based on Deakin's description of how it will sound and based on the songs Noah's debuted live. I'm guessing as soon as AC tours again (maybe fall 2025?) and debuts new material I'll start to get that itch to hear their next record, but even then I might be able to ride the bootlegs for a bit before impatience kicks in. So really, I might not feel the impatience for AC studio releases until mid 2026. Great place to be in.

Where’s it available outside a cassette or a cap’n crunch digitized recording? I still haven’t heard it and i’ve been anxiously waiting too. I respect the cassette aesthetic but calling it a release when computers don’t even come with cd drives and there’s no digital “release?” Idk if you were being coy or not with your comment but it hit me in the sensitive bits! I’m still waiting for “from a beach” to hit somewhere too other than me buying a third vinyl box set of MPP for one track.

Yeah that really sums it up nicely, man. It's a little miracle of a record, can't believe how it syncs up with the AC live experience in my mind, and how high the songwriting quality is. it's a stunner

not to be a downer but isn't it now faded pretty quickly for me. It's a beautiful record to listen to but the songs haven't really stayed with me. maybe because it's such a slow-burn record it just isn't the type of thing I'm dying to put on all the time.
the sequencing is sort of awkward - whenever I look at that tracklist I find myself wanting cherokee and dragon slayer and prester john to be in there. all the skiffs tracks really would've been better had they been able to record them the same way and if they had all been recorded together I think a much more satisfying record would have come from it. but obviously I will never be happy dwelling on what-ifs.
I suppose at the moment I can't separate the sadness and frustration of covid times from these pieces of art that should've been able to flourish but instead are now inextricably linked to those challenges.

I’m not coming back to it a lot either. Aside from the sequencing which is definitely baffling I feel that my qualms with the album are birthed solely from my own silliness.
I went so hard on those bootlegs man, and for two years was so enamoured with these cuts that I just kind of ignored the fact that the final product I had pictured in my mind could never be realised. Lesson learned though, I feel like every AC fan needs to get demoitis at least once… right? (copium)
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great album, and I enjoy most of it when I throw it on, I just don’t throw it on much. Defeat still rocks the sock off my cock though.

Seconding this. It’s probably a core reason I couldn’t help myself re: bootlegs/demos. It was such a tonic for that time.

Obviously, it's subjective. If Fast Lea felt fully formed and worthy of his catalog but were only released on cassette, I'd probably still count them. To me, Fast Lea seems way underdone and were only released on cassette because they shouldn't be considered part of his official oeuvre. Dunno.

I don't think Skiffs and IIN quite fall into the same category as the golden era stuff for me.

They're truly special (yes, both of them!) and the best stuff they've made since 09 for sure.

But where the golden era stuff just stunned me and thrilled me with its innovation and originality I think looking back at the Skiffs era, my love for these albums runs just as deep but for different reasons. Be it COVID, the long wait for studio releases or just middle age for me personally, I think Skiffs era is more about patience, mindfulness, comfort, contentment, authenticity etc. These albums are special because they sit so comfortably and safely in my heart.

I agree that IIN hasn't aged the best, EXCEPT for Defeat. Still feels like they nailed that one, it hits an emotional register that's similar to a lot of their best stuff, albeit maybe more melancholic than ever.

still think IIN should've cut Gem -> Clubs for an EP and just followed Defeat with Kings, but the rest of the tracks make for a perfect album. I don't revisit it too often but it sounds better each time I do

Making weird leaps tonight between Feels and an eccentric classisict, Dr. Ammon Hillman, whose research centers around drug use in Roman antiquity. He talks about ancient people, including the biblical Mary, whose lips were “stained with the purple” and others—Jesus’s “children”—whose fingers were “stained with the purple.” At any rate, looking at the Feels cover art… the children puking a purple substance, a young girl bleeding purple from the eyes and mouth… now this Hillman guy talking about the purple drugs, people with the purple… Weird, occult stuff. There is also, of course, the saying, “born in the purple.” What am I saying? Not sure. What do you think the Feels art is communicating?

And, yes, have to agree with Hellomark. “Defeat” makes Isn’t It Now? Had a moment with “Prester John” yesterday—incredible. I like “Stride Rite,” but not revisiting much on IIN? at the moment. In due time, probably…

interesting connection - doubt that was intended since Avey just found the children's book on the street and collaged it but it's fun to find additional meaning when the art takes on a life of its own

I always thought the puking was meant to evoke lovesickness, since Feels is an album full of queasy love songs. it also reminds me of that feeling of coming up on hallucinogenics, the visceral discomfort in the pit of your stomach but also the experience of everything being disorienting and confusing as if you're seeing the world from a child's eyes again. both just raw, new emotional reactions that you don't really know what to do with

The first volume of "The National Park Album" launches August 20th, 2024, featuring an extraordinary collection of original songs by legendary artists Ry Cooder, Animal Collective, and Rising Appalachia. This ambitious project, spearheaded by writer Fredrik Colting, aims to create a unique musical tribute for each of America's national parks, celebrating the natural beauty and shared experiences they inspire.

Colting, deeply moved by the concept of national parks as wild, beautiful spaces that connect us to nature and ourselves, initiated this cultural mission to capture the essence of these iconic landscapes. "Two things that unite us as humans are our love for music and nature," Colting stated. "I wanted to be part of creating an album that celebrated this connection in a time when we should be reminded of what unites us, rather than what divides us."

Volume I: A Journey Through America's National Parks out on August 20

Volume I of "The National Park Album" features 15 original songs, each recounting a unique story from various national parks. From the visual spectacle of Yosemite's Firefall to the mysterious disappearances in Olympic National Park, the album explores the rich histories and legends of these natural wonders.

Featured Tracks Include:

“Congaree” by Animal Collective – An ode to the biodiversity of Congaree National Park.

"The National Park Album" is available for streaming on all platforms starting August 20th. 100% of the profits will go to support the national parks. Limited edition vinyl sets can be purchased at Urban Outfitters, Huckberry, The Parks Project, REI, and thenationalparkalbum.com.
