Another person mentioned this earlier, but The Challenge coming after this on the single is actually kind of a sick transition in its own right

But yeah, this is still so transportive, every section is its own world but flows so naturally from one to the next. Like once I'm through to the "coming of age" section, I need to hear the "defeat" section because of how inevitably the arrangement leads to it - I guess because Avey managed to keep the bare structure of the song intact, while still stretching and evolving it to its utmost limits with the band

in addition i took two photos of as much of each pattern as i could fit in frame so you can see how the full pattern melds together.

I finally got a copy of the deafeat 12", so I've now listened to the challenge live edit, I gotta say its pretty sick! more than anything I'm blown away by the fidelity of the live recordings, everything just sounds exquisite. vocals are stunning, the drums are pristine. further case in point we need a full live release from the skiffs/now era.

Quick thought about Defeat as a possible album closer … I seem to recall people reporting that ?Deakin? thought Defeat ended too down/sad to close the album. Am I remembering that right? If so, it seems kinda funny that they chose Kings instead. I love it as a closer. But it’s bleak!!

I have to admit something to fellow fans that will likely be an unpopular opinion. I am so close to loving this recording of this song, but I am hung up on a superficial detail. It drives me crazy how Dave doesn’t enunciate the last consonants of the phrases in the verses during the first section. With his voice so front and center, and the content so clearly emotional, it feels like the intention is to pay extra close attention to his voice. And don’t get me wrong, he is singing beautifully, but to me the lack of enunciation just takes me out of it. I can’t seem to find aesthetic justification for it so it just reads as a mistake to me.

Anyways just had to get that off my chest. I really want to get past this hang up because I think otherwise this is an incredible song and I really want to fully love it
