Not sure if this has been said already but does anyone else get serious Crimson vibes from Laughing Hieroglyphic?
On DT in general, it really didn't click with me at all when it first came out so I basically shelved it. Came back every few years to see if it made sense and nothing really. Then last night I went on an evening walk in the drizzle and oh man... The eagle has landed. So emotionally potent. So raw in places and murky in others. But easily some of his best writing. To me it also just sounds so different to anything else he had done leading up to it and anything else since (apart from tiny bits of CHz-iness and Slasher Flickiness here and there).
Anyway sorry I know I'm probably stating the blindly obvious to most here but... wow. Didn't expect to find a new AC facet that I'd love all these years later.

We've been getting our first real tastes of fall where we live. The wind is chilly and the leaves crunchy. So naturally yesterday I decided to give this a listen during a drive, as this album will always be linked to cool October air for me. While most of it was as good as ever, the surprise knock out this time was Cemeteries. WOW. Somehow in the 12 years this has been out, that song has never hit me like that until now. It's placement is incredible, after the sort of hyperactive Ghost of Books and the other more rhythmically driven tracks before it, here is this ghostly wisp of a song that takes you to a whole other world; a deeper layer of the swamp. Hard to put into words the exact feeling this song gives me now, it's just so dark and mysterious, and perfectly evokes the feeling of slowly passing by a cemetery at night and letting your mood become pensive, or even morbid. Might be my second favorite next to Laughing Hieroglyphic now.

Yeah, definitely have to revisit that next. I remember at the time thinking it was even better than the studio version.

Totally! I always thought Crimson and Monkey Riches sounded like full band evolutions of the DT sound. Crimson def could've closed an album opening with Laughing Hieroglyphic in an alternate reality imo.

i have a playlist with some random anco stuff on it, mercury man crimson and ghost of books are all on it, they fit so well together. absolutely adore ghost of books, the really water mix works super well on that track. love when the delayed vocals overlap with the end of the chorus. sounds like classic anco in a weird way

I remember when this album was first announced...man I was so excited, I had always wanted to hear an album with this kind of atmosphere. When Avey talked about how this swampworld he was making is his interpretation of his own personal hell, it really resonated with me and I knew before it even came out that I was going to love it. It did not disappoint.
Laughing Hieroglyphics is a masterpiece, the first time I heard that squishy beat it blew my mind...and that melody that pops in when he sings "Now I'd trade in all I'd saved..." is so perfect. 3 Umbrellas makes me insanely giddy (those arpeggios in the chorus, mmmm), great vocal melody too. I absolutely love that synth(?) tone that Avey uses on Oliver Twist, how it kind of sounds like the wind...it sounds dark but beautiful. The way Ghost of Books changes constantly while still remaining in the same "place" is genius, kind of reminds me of what Panda Bear was saying about J Dilla's Donuts when he was doing interviews for Tomboy. Love how it ties in to the whole "changing light" motif in the lyrics. Cemeteries is the most underrated song on here in my opinion, seems like he really nailed the atmosphere he was going for on this song and I love those background vocals that come in during the second half. Heads Hammock is perhaps my least favorite but I still like it a lot, the oscillating tones sound too cool and I love the pitch-shifted vocals in the second half. It has great lyrics as well. Heather in the Hospital makes me tear up a bit, enough said. And Lucky 1 is a great way to end the album, optimistic but in this kind of weird bittersweet way. I'm not sure why but I really love that synth thats backing up Avey's vocal melody when he sings "there have been days you feel so sad", just sounds so perfect.
To top it all off I think this album has some of the best production in any of their albums. It makes me wonder why they aren't willing to produce/mix the Animal Collective albums on their own, but oh well.
Sorry for the long write-up but I can't help but gush over this album. I think its extremely underrated, and though its not my favorite AC-related release its probably the one I connect to most on a personal level.
Gotta go listen to this now.
I love Down There I always felt its sonic atmosphere was the anthesis to MPP's , like Imagine MPPs atmosphere being a beautiful blue pool or a gorgeous blue lake that is left uncared for and eventually turned into a green algae filled swamp or pool which is what i imagine Down There's sonic atmosphere to be , it's ugly looking but theres some real beauty underneath

And if I have some kind of need
Maybe the thing I need is the thing I've got
And if I look inside of me
I find the thing that can't be took or bought
And I know that there are needy
Some are good, yeah, but some are rotten
Why should I motivate my needs
When I know my greed should be forgotten
Maybe the thing I need is the thing I've got
And if I look inside of me
I find the thing that can't be took or bought
And I know that there are needy
Some are good, yeah, but some are rotten
Why should I motivate my needs
When I know my greed should be forgotten
