Not to stir the pot any more than it already has been, but the next album thread has got me thinking about how much a lot of deakin's lyrics, particularly on royal and stride, have helped me get through some of the hardest times ive had to go through. Anco is of course a pretty uplifting band a lot of the time (brother sport being probably the most obvious example but that's far from the only one), soo i thought it would be cool to make a thread for people to share some anco lyrics that have helped them get through hard times. We could all use a little positivity right? Pretty sure this hasn't been done yet.
"Song shuts my eyes
Reminds me of my fight
To know the way"
In the Bonefish pod about skiffs they mention this line but I remember them saying "my fight to go away", i always thought it was that too but i looked it up and you can hear it a little more clearly in those new boots. My mishearing of the line always stuck with me, as someone who often does feel like i am fighting to go away, whether it be struggling with suicidal feelings or just using drugs and other distractions to get away from all of the hard stuff. Knowing it's actually "know the way" feels a little more hopeful but just as relatable. Sometimes you're stuck in a rut and you just don't know which way you're supposed to go. Sometimes when I am basking in the sun and I close my eyes and I can see the light through my eyelids
i get a feeling that though i don't know what that way is just yet it can't be too far from reach.
iin came out around the time i found out that my mom had a brain tumor and my grandmother had lung cancer, there are obviously two major lines that correspond with that stuff and though it makes it hard to listen to sometimes, the rest of the song feels like a gentle reminder that there is life after grief.
not to get too personal in the first post of this thread lol, i just wanted to share some love for deakin after the mess that is the next album board..

Untitled 3 off young prayer makes me smile always, though it has no lyrics. Sorry about all you have going on mate. I hope good news and better times are just ahead. Take care

Here's a little tip
How to look at what is really living
Treating every day
As an image of a moment that's passed
For some reason I was really touched by this one. I guess I always got indirect life advice from AC lyrics. So now it's phrased directly as a tip, I guess I better take it. Too bad I'm not 100% sure on what it even means. But I try anyway

because you taught me to stand / and that splinters will rise
coolness is having courage / courage to do what’s right
also, asking CA 8 years ago what AC song should be the first I play for my newborn son and getting the obviously correct recommendation of “winters love” — I pulled the boy out of the box / and made that boy a man
also, singing him “Derek” for the next few years as a kind of lullaby — I like how it marks the dog and baby’s life and needs as distinct experiences without making too much of a value statement about them
also, when the “step by step” SoundCloud rip first showed up I listened to it while running up the final steep hill on the way to my parents’ house and now I do it every time to mark that I’m nearly done (hill is long enough for most of the EP if I skip the second half of creative source)

Thank you so much, that really means a lot. I also love Untitled 3, possibly the most bittersweet sounding song ive ever heard.

Amen. Nice post. Didn’t want to jump into that toxic mess, but I’ll say it again here: “Stride Rite” is, after “Defeat,” my favorite thing about Isn’t It Now?.
Have to also go with a Young Prayer lyric from “Untitled 06,” the repeating “Iiiiii will not give up on you-ou.”

I love the delivery of that line, it feels completely different than when he sings it on Loch Raven. On Untitled 06 it almost has a tinge of bargaining to it, where on Loch Raven it sounds more resolute and assured.
A couple years ago I read someone on rym talking about the line (on raven) in the context of an unhealthy relationship they were in, the feeling of not wanting to give up on someone despite all they put you through. It can be discouraging when everyone else around you is very openly disapproving of that person, even if it's because they care about you, and I think the line in that specific context (even though it's likely not about that at all) that song, for me anyway, helps to reframe the situation in a more objective and positive light.
This doesn't really have anything to do with all dat but i also love the little "and im gonna chase youuu". i didn't even notice that for several years but now its one of my favorite parts of the song. the delivery adds a nice flavor to the song.

If you fill up your heart, it spills outside
You'll find everything inside the heart on top of the hive
And you'll fight like a dog, you won't go wild
Even all the impossible places you'll go in your life

As someone who struggles with mental illness and particularly intrusive thoughts/OCD:
“(thinking bout) Torture
Don’t let it get you down
There’s other ways to fight torture
I hope it gets you round
Shake it off with me, torture
…
Now don’t get too freaky on me!”
Also happens to be my favourite AC song.
