still waiting for my vinyl to arrive from rough trade, argh

tough seeing it at record stores == every time i go in i will at least pick up a copy just to be able to hold it and i admire the artwork and then sadly put it down knowing i've got to wait for my copy

in a way i think of the "main album" sides A/B/C and D as the epilogue/accompanying EP -- something in the way those last 4 songs are laid out in comparison to how the album flows from songs 1-5

still in love/awe of this record, a definite career peak (of many peaks) for the band

I was definitely baffled by ATCAB on my first dozen listens. But I'm starting to find it to be a spiritual cousin of the middle section of Defeat. Outta left field; a bit over the top; playful. Likewise, the twinkly riffs in Stride have started evoking some of Geo's soundscapes in part three of Defeat. So those two tracks, which I'd been having a hard time incorporating into my experience of the album as a whole, are starting to click a lot more. And . . . this just accentuates, for me, how much Defeat kinda unites everything else.

really like this analysis

Still find Stride to be a bit of an outlier. Great song but it really does just feel like a Deakin song shoved onto the album. Really think it could've done with Panda harmonies instead. Only song on the album with one vocalist...

Isn’t that PB doing background vox beginning at 2:04 and again at 3:49 in “Stride”? I swear I hear Dave in there too.

Deak, in one of his recent interviews, mentions “Clubs” as one of the products of Dave’s explorations into 14th and 15th century music. I’m starting to hear it—the repetition, Panda’s harmonies, the keyboard melody. Take away the percussion, slow it down a bit and drench it in cavernous cathedral reverb: you have yourself a little taste of what sounds to me like medieval plainchant, about which I know absolutely nothing.

Deakin was messaged about stride, he said that Avey did the verse harmonies in studio but I just don’t hear it at all. It’s clearly Deakin with himself, with panda in the chorus, and Avey doing his falsetto part

Not sure what you all are on about. I did no harmonizing with myself. The harmonies in the verses are Dave. Just like he does live. Noah and Dave both sing on the chorus. No self harmonies.

Cheers Josh! Thx for clearing that up. Are the vox overdubbed?

Anyone done some cover art staring? This thing looks like a panda’s face to me.

Other members on there? The green eyes make a face with the album title of course too. That would theoretically be Avey I guess since he wrote the lyric so it would be coming out of his mouth

cool idea but kinda doubt since that whole mosaic-y part of the cover is a fabric from joanns ha. prolly not intentional id guess

Lol I love Josh jumping in specifically to clarify that. What's up man

This album's only hitting harder as fall progresses. it's got such an autumnal sound. The opening piano on stride rite makes my heart hurt every time.

Lots of amazing music this fall... I've been listening to the new Kristen Hayter album, new Jane Remover, OPN, Mitski, a bunch of others. Isn't It Now seems to float weirdly apart from everything else, like it's on its own timeline. Probably in large part because the songs have lived with me already for four entire years, through several chapters of my life. It's hard to even think of it on the same terms as other music because it feels like an album I'm already close friends with

Holy shit that is Dave. You can hear it clearer on the 'so we'd know' bit. That's crazy, never would've guessed

Gotta admit, I was 99% sure it was Deakin lol. Surprised how much Dave's timbre sounds like Deakin during that part . Either way, it's a sick song

That’s the part that sounds so much like Deakin to me! I guess Im just not meant to hear it. Even the ai a capella version on YouTube I cannot hear Avey in the verses and I’m usually good at distinguishing voices. Guess its time to just accept that I’m wrong and that’s ok

The only thing more hilarious than being that wrong is how sure some people were.

Stride Rite is probably the best song on the fucking album though.

Deakin, if you see this, thank you.

Fairly sure it’s Deakin doing the high harmony in the first part of Genie’s Open (top of the heap, going to sleep, etc.) based on him doing those parts live, too—have seen some people say that’s Avey but I think Avey only does the low harmony in the first part (you can’t buy it etc.)

he is totally chameleonic.

Truly. Is it because the melody he’s singing is so much a Josh melody, so different from his usual delivery and style?

Side note: I remember a moment on Dave’s solo Cows tour with Josh and Jeremy, maybe during “KC Yours,” when he turned into Frans Hals’ jester lute player. (He was playing his bass.) He kinda leaned back, like cheeya, and this look of pure mischief came over him. I remember thinking, “This man is not human—he’s a sprite.” It was beautiful. He was beautiful. The whole shebang was beautiful.

After some weeks away from this album. Magicians from Baltimore is so beyond good, standing shoulder to shoulder with Alvin Row, Winters Love, Fireworks, In the Flowers, brother sport. Truly one of their monumental impossible Godhead achievements. The utter JOY of the GENIUS makes my eyes water every time

Was thinking this exact same thing last night after a considerable break from listening. Unbelievable song, just fucking blows me away every goddamn time.

Any Japanese fans here? Apparently Domino included an “Animal Collective Guidebook” with the Isn’t It Now? LP in Japan. It looks rad—an interview, notes about each record, each solo record, etc. Feel like this would go over so well stateside too. Why don’t labels do this more often?
