Yeh, I can’t imagine not loving Clubs really. Unless you for some reason feel strongly that it should have been a ‘proper’ song. I see it like College or maybe even Fitter Happier or something like that. It’s an interlude type piece but a highly entertaining and well executed one.

I love Clubs . . . I've just had a hard time loving it within the context of this album.

Placing Clubs in between Stride and Kings at the end of this album is one of the funniest things they've done

IIN virgin here (well, virgin if you don't count my one night stands with soul cap, defeat, and gem)
i decided to have my first listen while walking through the park, which was a good choice because, well, first of all, i hadn't been out of the house in a while so spending more than an hour outside was really good for my mood, but second of all, being surrounded by nature (or as close to nature as i can get in suburbia) really elevated the whole experience. i'm kinda burnt out on describing songs and what i like about them so all i'm gonna say is i'm very happy with this album, it just about lived up to the hype, and i can't wait to spin it again
okay fine here's a couple of scattered thoughts while i still have them in my brain:

okay fine here's a couple of scattered thoughts while i still have them in my brain:
- the first half of genie's open kinda has mgmt vibes
- defeat sounds a lot better when i'm walking around looking at stuff and listening to it with the expectation that it's just gonna be "pretty good" than it did on my first listen, where i just laid in bed with my eyes closed expecting to be blown away by the next "impossible soul"
- lol genius of love synth on ACAB
- okay but seriously the next album needs to be more stuff like ACAB

Defeat is truly a thing of wonder. What other band could pull off a song like this? I love the description in the p4k review that pegs it as halfway between narrative and an atmospheric piece. That's kinda what I love about it, it's a suite of conventional songs that are slowed down to such a severe degree that it also forces you to slow down to follow it.

When I saw them debute Kings Walk at desert daze 2019 I was like holy shit, this might be the most animal collective song ever, but in a good way!

Yah I love Painting With and Centipede, always been two of my favorite AC records and always felt like the panning of them was some kind of weird groupthink bullshit lol. Anyways loving this album listened last night through and really impressed with the studio version of Defeat on this listen through. Genies still might be my fave on the record though.
saying these two records got panned is revisionist history
Metacritic:
IIN - 79
TS - 76
PW - 69
CH - 75
They did.
I'm not only referring to metacritic but the general narrative, you don't have to look far to see what I mean, even Geo referred to it in that interview someone quoted somewhere above which is what I was responding to.

I dont know if it's cause i was high, but this album sounds completely different on vinyl.
I was staring at my carpet (which I noticed looked like it had eyes). The lights were dim. Once that transition between Soul to Genies started going I started shaking a little bit, it sounded that good. Ill try re listening to the vinyl to make sure, but so far vinyl waaaaayyyy better.

Okay “final” thoughts after several listens by someone who didn’t listen to boots aside from Defeat. Overall, the album is a little underwhelming for me. However, the criterion I’m basing that against is the incredible amount of hype these songs have received over the past few years. Yes, I’m pointing fingers.
I don’t really love Broke Zodiac, and the back half feels pretty light despite the quality of Stride Rite. ACAB is fun, I really like it, but it is obviously short and has that interlude/half-formed feeling. Kings is just a bit meh. Gem and I is decent but also on the meh scale. Like I said before, Defeat is just a bit boring relative to the Music Box version that I loved.
Soul Capturer is great, but I was hoping the other songs would surpass it. Genies Open is the one true bright spark on this album - it’s great. Magicians is the interesting one… holy dooley it has been hyped but I found the first half pretty boring in terms of melody and sound. Reminds me of Today’s Supernatural in that way, although also Avey’s vocals on it remind me of Centipede Hz era. I think the last couple of mins are really cool, and I get that it has the feel of an epic, meandering song, but otherwise I’d love to hear why people are obsessed with it so much. Maybe I’ll change my mind with more listens.
I like the album, but for me it doesn’t beat Time Skiffs. Other posters on here will act like that’s an impossible take, but whatevs. I thought it would be fun to write a long, critical post given I’m generally a bit of a “gusher” on here. I still like the album and, being a superfan, will play it to death.

Crazy to me that there's any hate for Zodiac. It's such an obvious and clear home run to my ears

I do wish Broke Zodiac had a proper bridge or something, but yeah, I adore it. I've considered Magicians my favorite just because of how powerful it is, but I'm much more addicted to Broke, so it might be my favorite

There’s nothing technically wrong with Zodiac, but the melody is just really boring and unsatisfying for me. Particularly the chorus. Unsure why

I do think the album's biggest issue is the way it ends. Kings and ACAB are both good songs and Kings is a great closer, but they're both very slight and it makes the last stretch of the album feel underdeveloped as a result.

I can't really explain the magic that Magicians has on me. I think just the sonic landscape of it is perfect. Part one's chorus is bewilderingly beautiful, pulled straight from an expansive dream. And by the end of part 3 I'm just gone in joyous wonder. I love how you can really tell what each guy is doing in the outro compared to part one. Each playing a part that stands out and is so uniquely "them", combining into something greater than the sum of it's parts
Deaks sort of meandering loose piano style is truly at home in the same room with the other guys. The way he plays off Panda's swung-out-of-their-mind drums really shines.

Pretty good album. A nice follow up to Time Skiffs.
Beginning of Defeat gives me Fall Be Kind vibes, which is excellent.

Amazed that anyone could be anything but totally captivated by the melodic heft of Broke Zodiac’s chorus.

Broke chorus is honestly one of their defining moments as a band. Tremendously good.
