So cool thanks for sharing! Where'd you find this? Didn't realize that the bassoon sounding part was something they recorded and not just a sample. I know we got a personnel list for Time Skiffs about everything that the 4 dudes did, wonder if we'll get more info again like we did there and for defeat

and russell did mix it, he just had some assistants ig

A truly fantastic interview, thank you for finding and posting it!!

plentiful humors, psychological insights, many unique passages about the natures of the band, and just a really unique flow to the conversation!!

First impressions with music are super powerful. And that’s where the whole demo-itis thing comes from, right? There’s a lot of times when fans of a band, especially a band like ours where we’ll play stuff live before we record, are disappointed by studio versions. I just think that first impressions are really sticky in a way where it’s hard to match the power of the first go-around.

...

Also, at least in our case, there are a ton of people taping shows and even the recording of a show can be the definitive version of a song for them forever. And it’s cool, I don’t mind. I feel like the recorded version is always sort of what we’re aiming at the whole time, but somebody else having a different perspective on it is only a positive thing. I like the idea that a song is never done, that it’s always growing into something else. That means it has all these snapshots all along the way during its lifespan, and different snapshots resonate with different people. It’s sort of like how with skate videos, the things get fused. I imagine people’s experience with a song fuses with what’s going on with their life at the time, the relationships they’re having and all that. It gets tied together in a way that’s really lasting and powerful.

From the interview: “…you see how certain guys quit, and there are people who get upset at each other. All of that is really fascinating to me.”

See I told you guys Panda wants to quit and is upset with everyone in the band!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently with how listening to all the 2018 boots significantly impacted this whole 5 year era for me. Especially trying to decide if i should listen to the new Avey boots, but Noah just gave me all the validation I need lmao

Not sure why. But I’m called to avoid all their solo boots and to way over listen to their full band boots.

think we'll be seeing a number of reviews that read a point more positively than the score attached to them, which is to be expected with indie rock veterans putting out solid albums in the 2020s. i find it useful to take these reviews as saying "this album is great for what it is" without actually saying the "...for what it is" part out loud. i think that part gets left out partially because that sort of contextual relevance/vitality based criticism can be genuinely difficult to articulate properly, but i chalk it up mostly to the general trend towards niceness in music criticism lately

i'll say that unless pitchfork or fandango either totally trash IIN out of nowhere or declare it a modern masterpiece, it truly doesn't matter what sort of reviews the record gets; AC's cultural stock is pretty impossible to budge one way or the other at this point. the diehards are the target audience and that's okay

So Strawberry Jam is not just Avey's but several bandmembers' least favorite album... How scandalous considering it's viewed as one of their all-time best now

not too uncommon that a volatile environment has resulted in a great record

tho it’s prob more common that it’s resulted in a bad record

lol how is P4k going to handle oneohtrix, wilco, and animal collective all coming out on the same day? My guess is Wilco gets top bill as it seems their new album might actually be good, and then either AC or oneohtrix get their review on Saturday, and whoever loses out gets Monday? Maybe best album wins Friday? I hope its IIN

yeah the distinction for me is if it's a solo set of almost entirely new material with just a couple old songs i'll def be listening to that a lot, but if it's a set with only 1-3 new songs i'll hold off (eg mothlight and ATP and tomboy boots were all too good to pass up, but haven't listened to the newest avey tracks from the 7s tour)

that interview with noah is one of the best.

something cool/coincidental i noticed...that newspaper clipping he sent with his old basketball team shows that his jersey number was 24. 24 was the placeholder title for Car Keys. Probably coincidence, but kind of a cool easter egg.

Was there any information about why the album was recorded to tape? Was it Elevado’s decision? Which were the restrictions — like the maximum number of tracks per song, was every track recorded from the beginning to the end of a song, etc? It’d be interesting to know about it in the forthcoming interviews.
There’s a lot of tape hiss on the record.

Also, it’s interesting which of the two albums guys prefer themselves.

Wow, beautiful review, really captures the record--perfectly describes Stride ('twinkles with cascades of piano'), and acknowledges that Genies and Magicians are top tier...

The Chicago listening party was a little more last minute so it was basically just the record being played on a hifi system at a restaurant but even with all the people talking over it the album sounded amazing. Definitely looking forward to getting the vinyl after i get my turntable set up again.

One day til release day! I’ve listened a hundred times already but still pumped for it to be out there. Another masterpiece from the GOAT. Also gonna be nice to hold a physical copy in my hands. I’m unreasonably excited.

that's not his jersey being #24, that's him dropping 24 points in the game (baller)

really excited for this and honestly really thankful for the AnCo boys for keeping up such a steady stream of engaging content for so many years. I'm in the minority that isn't really too into Defeat but hopefully it grows on me in the context of the rest of the album. I only heard these songs in the live shows I attended and haven't been checking out the boots or singles so it will be really fresh for me!!

This is the grossest thing to speculate on but im bored at work and...

I bet AC will also get a 7.1 like Wilco from The Fork. I think they're honestly very self conscious about embracing bands they initially championed or are known for championing and so approach those bands with a self conscious weariness.

Now they also used to hype Oneohtrix a lot but something about him feels different, like he's still somehow ascending, so idk, Oneohtrix will be 9.5 and IIN with by 6.9, and we will feel very grossed out and confused by that, but whatever, calling it now
