Here's one of the big ones: Glasslands! Sorry it has taken so long. I have been sidetracked with a Ween remastering project I'm now part of, as well as just some life event stuff too. Hope you guys appreciate the remix of this classic standalone performance. Lots of gooey and tender moments colliding, and I did my best to try and minimize the audience noise, while doing the normal things like making a nice stereo field and balancing instruments. Enjoy!

just checking this thread out in full, WOW

i'm not sure if this helps but i did record Angeleno Jam when it was played live, should be in the all live recordings thread - not sure if this other version can be matrixed with that one, or if it even should be?

also, i noticed you had notes for mixing down ODDSAC on your own but they seem to have disappeared? or am i losing it

Thanks ya'll ✌️

@meys: I'm now finding out that I might have mixed from some other remix of that specific recording, so if that's the case, thank you for documenting that night! I might take another whack at it eventually, but they throw so many sounds at the wall, I'd have to remix each "song", so it's really a question if it's really worth it for me.

Also yeah, I decided to clean up that portion of the post to make it more presentable. The main thing for ODDSAC is that there are these fake back channels that are too loud for normal fold down procedure (AKA converting a surround sound file to stereo), and a fake center channel that is just a mono fold down of the stereo mix as well. If not taken into consideration, a homemade copy could have a lot of clipping and because of these back channels, and with the center channel track, slightly askew phase alignment.

Thanks for the ODDSAC tips!!! Been looking to rip my own proper copy from the DVD so this will certainly help

Np, and here's how it should look in Audacity. Make sure to stereo link the first two and last two audio channels (even though you're just gonna bring the second pair down in the end), mute the first mono track, bring down the bass channel somewhere between 3 to 6 decibles to taste, mute the last stereo track, and then you can basically just render this as a stereo file and you should be good

Just finished this one. It's fairly similar to the original as there wasn't much to be done, but now it's a more consistent volume, and it's a bit clearer. Peace!

This is kind of weird, but I'm thinking of contacting Deakin about if they want to use any of these recordings for something.

The idea came up when I was talking to my brother the other week, and he knows fans do a lot of legwork for things they enjoy, and that it goes unrecognized to a large degree. He actually suggested the idea of talking to one of them. Normally I'd think this is kind of over the line, but I've seen similar things with the Ween remastering community, and AC is pretty nice to their fans, right?

I dunno, is it crossing some sort of line? I'd make sure to remove any of the B-side stuff I accidentally included in the original assorted collections (and include the updated mixes and retrieved tracks for y'all).

Thoughts?

I think this could be worth it. I don’t see anything to lose. I agree that Josh would be a good guy to contact. Maybe even Dave, he’s also expressed interest in releasing archival recordings if I remember correctly.

Think of which recording(s) you might send as an example of the kind of work you’ve been doing, and maybe provide the original mix/master you were working from for comparison.

I have no idea about the guys’ finances but based on the cancellation of the European tour I would not expect to be gainfully employed as a result of this, but who knows, they may give you access to recordings to work with. Anyways, I think you’re doing great work and I wish you luck!

Oh that's totally right, Dave probably has a sizeable collection awaiting digitization. Maybe I'll send it his way then...

But yes I agree with both points. I'm going to make a YT channel with some of the updated mixes so it's easier to accesses (definitely don't wanna make them have to pull up FLACs from Mediafire xD). I'll probably link to another YT video of the same recording that's in it's un-mastered state for comparison.

And absolutely, I'm not even going to ask for money. This is mostly for the community, and since I'm on disability, I couldn't even accept much money anyways. Buuuuut, if they do offer some, that might be cool too. I mainly just want to propagate love for the band!

Finally listening to this and you are a wizard! I can’t believe you were able to get rid of so much of the crowd noise it’s seriously magic. And the bits that are left sound kinda like they could be snippets of Geo samples or something so it works - this new version is such a revelation!

Hey I'm glad you appreciate it! It really is insane what these new AI demixing tools can afford us, and at this point I've been going back through a lot of the remixes I've done before and redoing them with the new tools. It even makes frequency restoration easier since I can use multiple approaches based on each steam, thus reducing overall artifacting. I honestly wish I had these tools a decade ago when I was really into sampling and plunderphonics

Here's another big one. I think I'm going to use this as an example to show Avey once I finally upload stuff to YT: Chocolate Girl from BBC Radio 6

You know how it goes. Added harmonics, improved EQ, added stereo width, restored dynamics, side-chained the bass to the kick so it sounds more thumping, re-balanced instruments, and added a little magic dust to the ending. Enjoy!

I probably listen to this boot more than any other and have long bemoaned not having a copy with greater articulation of the highs/lows. I love the spatial depth created here. Good work as always!

Will do.

Also, I was thinking about what old remixes would benefit from the demixing technology and I remembered Panda & Rusty's one-off: it has just vocals, guitar and samples, so isolating everything was easy and with barley any bleed. The mix I've got going so far is WAY clearer and more spacious than the first. Just trying to figure out what to do with the burst of drums in the middle because it's such a clatter, but then it's going to sound pretty incredible.

The update to Panda Bear & Rusty Santos' collaboration for the NY fashion show for United Bamboo. Separated the instruments which allowed much better positioning and denoising results. Restored frequencies, evened out volume, enhanced stereo feel, etc. I'm still not totally sure I love how the drum-heavy part turned out, so if it doesn't sound good to y'all, I might make one more fix. Hope you dig it

Sounds great! The guitars and bass/kick drum in the drum-heavy part are a little muted relative to the other parts, with the cymbal coming through more loudly, but it wasn’t horrible, still sounded good.

Is this a different performance from the Together-Bamboo Falls performance from Rusty and Noah that’s in your list, or an update to that one like your post suggests?

Yeah it's the same batch of songs, I just left it all as one file now since it's such a connected performance. And I re-titled it because of the Bonefish podcast with Rusty where he made it sound like it was more of a live thing they did to soundtrack a fashion show(?) Could be totally off the mark as I've been foggy in the mind lately. And yeah that percussion part is rough. I'm still trying to figure out how to salvage it.

Another post to say that version of Chocolate Girl is god tier. I didn't start listening to AC until after MPP so discovering those era bootlegs and this version of Chocolate Girl is one of my special AC moments like hearing Safer for the first time.

Thanks, A(ngelic) C(haos)!

And definitely contact someone from the band. They couldn't help but appreciate your work, I'm sure!

Awesome, glad you got so much out of it. It really is one of their best performances to me, so I'm glad people are digging it. I'm thinking it will be the example that I send to them showing what I can and have done.

Speaking of which, I am planning to send out that message in the upcoming week. My last hold up is what to actually call this project tagging-wise so it doesn't cause confusion down the line? Should I just call the YouTube page I'm gonna create the AnCo Archive in line with the work being down for Ween and it's Ween Archive? I don't really want to call it Angelic Chaos remasters or something because it's just a silly username based on an anagram for Nicholas Cage, and I don't wanna create any "AC Remaster" confusion.

Maybe hold off on using the band's name as part of your page name unless they endorse the project, out of respect for any plans they may have. Absolutely ask if they're cool with the name. Could definitely use Collected Animals Remaster Archive or something like that as an alternative, I'd imagine. And instead of a youtube link, send them a lossless file ;)

Hmm, it feels slightly less approachable to send a download link. Plus it's like another chore, but also I've seen old musician people like wetransfer for whatever reason. Maybe a Google drive link is less suspicious. Ugh the details of this stress me out :(

If you're wigging about sending a link, just ask if they have interest and if so, you're happy to send a link? Or just use Youtube, I was only concerned about audio quality and compression misrepresenting your work (does YT play back audio in lossless?)

Sorry it's been so long y'all. The disability and trying to fix my housing situation while also finding odd jobs has kinda consumed my life. Hopefully I can figure things out better soon, but in the meantime I've been uploading some stuff YouTube. It was nice Rusty actually posted on one of the videos saying it sounded good. I haven't shown anything to Avey or Deakin yet because I've been having a huge crisis of identity as an audio engineer, and communication has been a big part of that. Anyways I don't wanna pout too much here, so here's the Geo/Deakin performance for Prince Achmed that I can't even find the original recording of anymore, so it's fairly rare at this point:

Oh I’m really excited to check this out. I never got into the boots from this era so maybe this will be my way in. Thanks for doing this Angelic Chaos this is such a cool project. I love getting in there and messing with the boys music from time to time. I’ve been having lots of fun with stem splitters recently. Nice to hear another audio nerd messing with the boys music at such an advanced level.

@hewasbeingstinky: Yeah it's crazy what this technology can do these days. With the proper programs and models you can separate just about anything. Never thought it would be possible. Anyways thanks for the kind words :)

@muark You and me both. I've only seen AC twice in 14 years of loving them. Saw Slasher Flicks at least. Which I should revist live shows of honestly. I remember the one in Seattle, and Avey was doing like jazz guitar noodling in between songs which was really interesting.

Also

Think I'm going to upload The Unitarian Church show onto YouTube pretty soon, and I think it's time to finally update the assorted collections. Some of the mixes have been further improved, and in general there are more songs. Haven't included some of the new stuff that's clearly going on future albums just for my sanity, lol

If anyone can go over these, I think I left out anything that's easily available on CD or download. If so I'll upload them.
