Man, I'm so excited for r_o_s_s to hear these songs finally haha.
Believe me - I'm pretty excited too! I had a moment of weakness the other night and almost caved but my gf managed to deter me. Distracted myself with that new Sprain record (which is the best thing I've heard all year).
Just a few more weeks! The idea of finally hearing Defeat is so wild that it almost doesn't even feel real haha.
Big with the solid crowd
But he did it
Gave into the overdraft
now it's callin'
We got into a holy sound
and we all hit it
Sucked up and we got the shaft
and now we're fallin'
Sea in the sun
Changin' the name (Me and them, me and them, me and them)
Stayin' the same (Me and them, me and them, me and them)
I'm breaking the game (Me and them, me and them, me and them)
Comin' back to that oooo-oooooh
Back in the lane (Me and them, me and them, me and them)
Playin' the game
Quick with the compliment, there's nothin' in it
Took a sip from a saggin' dream, let's take a minute
Crack open another beer, let's get in it
Another tip to the golden year, we're probably in it
This is the one
I also can’t wait to see your reactions. We’ve probably built Defeat up too much. And a bunch of others! Hope you’re able to manage your expectations and just enjoy. Can’t wait to here your thoughts as you get to know it.

Playing the waht? The game? Playing the long game?
As much as I enjoyed following along these songs through bootlegs, live videos, blast radio recordings, this forum, and so on, I'd like to be able to just wipe my memory of IIN and TS and listen to them with a complete fresh pair of ears. But I'm not sure if this would enhance or actually reduce my appreciation for these songs. Probably the latter, the more that I think about it. It has been like watching my niece grow or something, who is coincidently just a bit older than these songs...
I usually don't suffer a lot from demoitis and agree with most of the decisions the band takes for the studio versions, so at least for me, I wouldn't want to miss being along for the ride with each album cycle. Still, I'm really impressed by your restraint, r_o_s_s. That takes some mad will power and I'm looking forward to your thoughts on IIN.
interested by the chatter about how TS and IIN would have been compiled as a more traditional AC release, LP + EP. but it feels like these records are more a kin to american beauty and workingman's dead. two distinct records from the same era/sessions released pretty close together.
still hoping they release some soundboards this fall once all the songs are officially released.
Yeh I’ve always listened to boots. It’s a pretty unique opportunity. The way AC work is unusual and for me a really special part of why I love them.
Agree. When new boots drop for the first time it really does feel like they've 'released' new music. That said I won't be partaking anymore. Really enjoyed Buoys for having avoided most of the boots. Loved 7s and Reset. And this era they've mostly nailed in terms of capturing that live feel imo and I feel confident they will again going forward. Good time to step away from the game
broke zodiac and gem and i sound sooooo pbvsgr to me. has the pbvsgrness of these songs been discussed.
i'll take it a step further and say these are the two best panda bear songs since pbvsgr and its a very crowded field of contenders IMO i fuckin' love these two songs so much easy album highlights for me, followed by stride and cap.
I really love live music - and I love listening to AC bootlegs. But at the end of the day, I value the studio album experience waaaay too much to ruin it for myself with live performances. It’s the same way as I feel when I’m excited for a video game. The feeling of discovery is the most important thing, and I wouldn’t wanna ruin that by watching trailers and such.
Really excited to dig into all their performances over the last 4/5 years once I’ve heard IIN. I haven’t even really heard much Skiffs stuff live either, aside from the odd song here and there.
I kinda thought the same about defeat being a standalone track, but honestly it works really well there. Te album feels like it's just starting on Broke Zodiac, like it doesn't feel that much time has passed. Then Magicians does it's thing. Defeat works, you come down from the height of joy Magicians is into a magical and breathtaking song. As another point, the album feels empty without those 20 minutes. Like it doesn't have much going on.
sorry to beat a dead horse about this but.......... ok i know it's freebirded and we're all enjoying it and whatnot, but it's still very WEIRD to me that there is still no promo whatsoever
out in 3 weeks and ZERO interviews....... wtf i wanna hear what they have to say about these jams what's goin on??
I wanted Genies with that Trains Across the Sea insert from that siriusxm video because I now can't unhear it. Also, not sure why exactly, but it keeps making me think of NES Star Tropics... maybe that bass is midi-like to me.
When Genie's Open changes up with about 2 minutes left - was it that abrupt in live performances of it?
It is an interesting song and that part is kind of like a coda/reprise. Wondering if there is a world where this album is actually called Sea of Light - it opens with Genie's and after Defeat (at the end) it goes into the little section to close out the album.
Long time listener, first time caller. Didn't listen to any of the boots bit I did see the band play a few of these last year. Can't speak to any demoitis but I can say I'm very happy with this as a new Animal Collective album. Need to see official lyrics for everything to make any firm statements (seriously what is going on on Clubs) but 5 listens in and this thing feels really thoughtfully assembled and constructed, a real powerhouse of a statement from a band that's been around for so long. Can't wait to live a lifetime with this record.
i think the thing that's really striking me about the sea of light section is just how loud the vocals are in the mix (not to mention how dry they are). i guess we already knew they'd moved firmly beyond their once-defining "vocals should just be one relatively un-emphasized component of a broader soundworld" ethos at this point, but i don't think the absence of that philosophy has yet been felt as strongly as it is here. sometimes the lack of mystery and obfuscation in this era has been compelling and even refreshing, but for the purposes of this song, i really do think the contrasting sections would've clicked fully if they'd just given the vocals the classic dreamy AC treatment
i want to balance out that criticism to say that instrumentally speaking, they absolutely fucking nailed the churning, ominous storm-at-sea vibe of the first two sections of genie's. i feel like i understand something deeper about the song that i never quite got from the live versions

The change to part 2 was one of my favorite parts of the song live, its one they can really jam on in the first section, similar to live Car Keys or Cherokee. On record it's more restrained actually.
I don't understand the "bum bums" on Gem. I still like the song but like why did they do that
Love ross edging blueballs king. When you finally listen, you're gonna blow a nuclear megaton load through your speakers and the wall of your living room because it's very good.

This right here…very very good. Hope you will share your thoughts with us when the time comes

I pretty heavily disliked this third section in the shows and boots. But I’m really coming around to it on the record… at first it felt sluggish to me but now the word that comes to mind is “hypnotic.” Those first two sections are churning and churning and then the bottom falls out and that third section just kind of floats on through with this mantra. It’s the sort of thing that would be hard to nail live but I get why it is the way it is here, and I think the reason it works so well is because of the fromt and center vocals. A bonus for me about the length of this section is that you have a lot of time to focus on all the various layers and smaller elements going on in the background.
Just kind of shocked at how fast I pulled a complete 180 on this one. And even though we weren’t talking about quite the same thing, the sentiment of “understanding something deeper” about this song through the recording is so spot on. This whole record is a future classic IMO
Isn't music weird. Like those bum bums in Gem either register as fully neutral or at least just like not bad at ALL and yet here we are. Not saying people who don't like it are wrong, just pointing out um. the beauty of subjectivity.
Also man I just don't have a problem with the pacing. Said this before so won't belabor, but it does seem to willfully go between vibes erratically where there's def a version that has like, Defeat ---> Stride ---> Kings a la a Feels style ambient side, but idk. I'm down for the back n forth. I mean I think we expect something different from AC cuz they're such a big transition-heavy band, live at least that we don't really expect these drastic shifts in mood/tempo. But like.... rock/pop records throughout the years have been known to do it on the reg so..... eh
All I want is Cherokee from this sesh... Now when I listen to Cherokee... I kinda just hear the ways in which it would sound different from this session. We don't NOT know they didn't re-record a few songs like that. But I also guess studio sessions are relatively specific and professional and you can't just use booked time willy-nilly and they might have really moved on from the Skiffs songs by then. Oh well its cool, I'll live, love this record, still KINDA love Skiffs
The Rolling Stones released a new single yesterday with some accompanying music video smut. Cue Sunset Blvd, cue big-tits Barbie, cue nostalgia overload. Garbage unit mover. They’re cartoons stuck in 1965. Dave, Noah, Josh and Brian are artists. I don’t expect to like everything they do or understand every decision they make. They make art, not commerce. Fun to discuss our expectations and disappointments—still haven’t heard the record yet—but everything put in and everything left out was intended. I am willing to bet the idiosyncrasies and outta-left-field decisions they made for Isn’t It Now? will be, for some of the critics, the very aspects that kept them interested, kept them listening, kept them wide-eyed in yet another magical dream the band has conjured for us.

i mean i think they're kinda bad, but i still like the song

I went back and watched a live performance of Gem from March of 2022 and to my surprise, very softly, Deakin does the bum bums live. They're just barely audible.
the BEST thing of this era is the level of genius in the DRY way the drums an the bass play together, with the aparent simplicity of the beat (panda doing great tricks of dinamic) being collapsed with the ALWAYS WONDERER basslines of avey. his aproach to playing bass is as always like discovering the instrument and at the same time instantanialy giving his touch.
this groovy mix, with deakin going nuts on the keys and geo being geo (hes also a keyboardist now, so...)
and i fucking love ACAB, its on repeat on my mind all the time. its PURE anco, a bliss from their old nuclear old tv showszy sound
