king's walk is an ultimate "its not my favorite, but im glad it exists" track

(i also think its gonna get dragged by the average listener as a cliche/caricature of what people think AC is [but actually isn't])

I’m still gonna try to wait till Sep 29 since it’s too hot for me to enjoy this fall record, but I can’t wait to try and mix Skiffs w/ Now together

I've initially been a little lukewarm on the last 2 songs, but after about 6 listens through the whole album, I've warmed up to them quite a bit. Acab is great for what it is, and such an earworm, but I kinda wish it had another part to it. Feels a bit unfinished in comparison to all the other tracks on IIN, that are imho absolutely perfectly arranged. With the exception of king's walk, which drags a little too much in the middle part. The moment where they all hold the really long note is almost like a joke where I feel they seem to want the listener to say "ooook, get on with it!"
I also thought the tracklist wasn't really ideal, but after repeated listens, it starts to make more and more sense. Again, with one exception: acab completely feels out of place as a penultimate track to me. I think I'll mostly listen to the album like this (track evaluations in parentheses):

Soul Cap (9/10)
Genie's (10/10)
Broke (10/10)
Magicians (10/10, they absolutely nailed this one)
Defeat (10/10)
ACAB (8/10)
Gem & I (10/10)
Stride (9/10)
King's Walk (7/10)

Putting ACAB after Defeat actually sounds pretty cool with the fade in and works much better than the abrupt start of gem & I here. Stride is a stunning song, but sounds just a bit too naked at certain moments, especially when compared to Royal. Deakin doubling himself with backing vocals in the verses sounds great, but it irks me a bit that that's the only time on IIN where that happens (I think). So, I wish he gave that part to avey or panda.
But that's all just minor details. All in all, this is such a great treat and I'm so thankful for every minute! Album of the year for sure!

I'm with this wavelength. The sounds and art match up: like something that's been sitting on grandma's couch since 1976. Warm, earthy, faded film graininess. AC's campiest album. Beautiful. Mushrooms mushrooms mushrooms. Strong incense that makes you cough. Patchouli and or palo santo

This album feels like MPP psychedelia in the woods. I don't know. Shout out to the piano in Magicians. And I go there when I can, many miles haunting me

This is from a few pages ago but this album is really spacey and ethereal to me. Definitely soaring across wide open skies among dancing constellations, a lot of dark blues and purples and greens, with flashes of white. Also Genies Open is like the end of Truman Show to me for some reason. I guess because it's just a stereotypical sailing in a storm visual lol, and weird stakes.

I've been to Baltimore a few times and Magicians is definitely reminiscent of the city, but added ethereal and night time and there are wizards now.

Neighboooooors.

Halloween decorations too. It's also a little hot out though. Also this album is really making me wanna replay Bloodborne so let's add that too I guess

Ok here's my alternate universe fantasy version of how this album could have turned out
Spoiler: show
in 2020 they decide to save more songs for these sessions, and instead opt for a modest EP to be recorded remotely:

Strung with Everything EP
1 Strung
2 Walker
3 WGB
4 Royal

Then they enter the studio with Elevado and lay down a whopping 14 tracks, producing:

TIME SKIFFS (Elevado version)
1 Prester John
2 Dragon Slayer
3 Car Keys
4 Cherokee
5 Gem & I
6 ACAB
7 Genie's
8 Passer-by
9 Stride Rite
10 Magicians
11 Broke Zodiac
12 Defeat

Then include Soul Cap and Kings as b sides somewhere... obviously a bit silly to think about it this hard, but I can't help but dream about what we could have had. Would have been a legitimate masterpiece.

For me, I like to reorder albums so that gives a whole new meaning or vibe to the album. It’s like I’m creating my own story, or like I’m part of the band, but with songs that already exist, since I’m not as musically talented as these guys are.

Somehow, I always have to think of this little girl whenever the "we'll drift on through the night..." section of genie's open comes around.
Also, king's walk kind a sounds like lion king music.

Well folks I love this record. Feels like I’ve been waiting forever to hear some of these and the journey makes it all the sweeter. The production is top notch in almost every song. Grateful they are still putting out albums that move me in a way that few other artists do. Also glad I can share that feeling with all of you.

Sad that it freebirded this early. But will buy it twice now because I feel guilty. Anyway, some initial thoughts:
Spoiler: show
Soul Capturer: Been listening to this so much since it’s release but loved the addition of the chatter at the beginning. I was skeptical with it being the opener but it really does work well. Ending is such classic AC.

Genie's Open: Loved the first half but the switch to the second left a little to be desired. Seeing it live several times left this thirst for it to be more upbeat and louder. Mixing choice is a bit odd but not a bad song by any means.

Broke Zodiac: Wasn’t as high on this track from the Skiffs tour but it turned out lovely. Panda melodies always just end up working.

Magicians From Baltimore: Immediate top tier for me. The saloony pianos near the “I played the theif” piece are the only thing that feels like it shouldn’t be there. But the ending melodies Avey is belting are some of my favorites they’ve ever done. “There is a dreeeeaaammm laaaaaannnd, many miles inside me.” I will happily get hot under these magnolias.

Defeat: Continuously giving me chills for the last five years.

Gem & I: RIP Jimmy Buffett. I’m in the bum bums slap clan. This song just makes me feel good. Cracking open beers and doing it again.

Stride Rite: What a haunting beautiful gut punch of a track. It’s like Deak is always trying to get me to tear up. Really hope he puts out more solo stuff. The keys are so soft and I just want to waltz around the room with my love.

ACAB: Let’s fucking go. Haven’t had that wtf feeling from them in so long. That is what drove me to follow religiously them some 15 years ago. So funky. What time signature is that? Would love to see them try to play this live.

King's Walk: I never saw this one live and avoided boots more or less. Surprisingly I love this as the closer. But I’m a sucker for any time it gets weird. Ending with “This world is tougher than it looks” hits pretty hard in context.

i think with genie's it was way dryer than i expect, very slight case of demoitis that has thankfully passed after a few listens.
I was never sold on broke zodiac but it's perfectly recorded, beautiful melodies throughout and great production.
gem and I kinda got the genie's treatment where i was used to more fx/fullness in the sound, but they stripped it back. once i got used to that sound i fell back in love with it.
defeat / magicians are perfect, full stop. and stride rite is powerful and so beautiful to hear. ACAB is a great addition to the batch.
haven't had *that* moment with kings just yet but i the harmonies came out super pretty, and i love the idea of the song a lot. it's just hard after 8 stone cold fucking classics.

i love all these songs so much. as a fan, i can't imagine a better record of these songs from the dudes. just happy we can all bask in the glow of great sounds this deep into their career.

Kings is a brilliant closer I think. You fall into this slow, droning rhythm, more or less regular, but inconsistent enough to keep you on your toes. ..This world is...tougher than it looks... before /nothing/, the silence, perhaps the flow of air with the pop of a locked groove repeating. It's haunting, and it's HEAVY, imo. It feels like a very heavy album all around and a very apt way to end it.

I’ve got the vibe that a bit of the TS/IIN era material is social commentary or implicitly about climate change. I think Defeat is, (“just a frightened mother” = Mother Earth), Prester John, and Kings. Soul Capturer is about how tech consumes us. Many other songs like Magicians, Cherokee, and Strung seem to be about how human connection is essential. Anyone else get that vibe?
