Found it, had a listen, love it!
I find this murky, bassy and deep that compliments Skiffs' airy vibes in a nice way. Dragon Slayer/Walker feels like a fresh glass of water after IIN's rich coffee vibes.

i gotta say "someone 'found it sitting on soulseek' a month prior to deciding to drop it on /mu/" is the weirdest freebird we've gotten since i've started listening to this band
great record. against all odds, the run from gem & i to all the clubs is maybe my favorite stretch of the album on first listen. stride rite is perfecto

Waking up to this and feeling like life is better now...
I can't believe the shorter songs which im looping back thru before second full plunge. Clubs is so fucking insane. I'm just Scooby Doo gang exploring some haunted ass vampire castle and getting bamboozled at every turn. But then it's also like NOT that Halloween-y cuz its vibe is almost too hard to fully pin down. I mean someone else said christmas-y.
Some people are saying medieval, some are saying ABBA, some are saying funky and I honestly don't really get that one the most, but I love that it's hard to even describe.
So like Avey has 3 shorter songs on this if you include Kings, 2 of which tho are poppy little bursts. And Panda has 2 shorter ones. Then 3 Epic Song Suites in early middle. And a Deakin ballad.
I mean I love it. And honestly the only thing on Skiffs that fully sits with this imo is probably Dragon. Prester John doesn't really fit to me that much, besides seeming "medieval" in terms of its title's reference. But like that 2nd part especially seems to fit better on the um uh, idk whatever Skiffs vibe is more.
And I mean just keep the good times flowing then, after Kings play Challenge or go strait into Dragon which guides u out of the medieval dank dungeon psych zone of IIN into the like. Um idk, more normal-song-length but adjacent sound world of Skiffs. That's 2 hours of high quality AC

Interested now in which parts of Skiffs fully do NOT fit with IIN. Like I'd say SWE for instance does NOT fit with IIN. WGB also probably definitely not. WGB and Cherokee I think are symbolic the most of what doesn't.
Do I still kinda wanna hear a re-deux of Cherokee and maybe Passer-by from this albums recording session, just in case they're somehow better? Yeah maybe. But I'm at peace. Cuz this thing is in my life now.
Im so pleased with the structure and pacing. You get these tidy and often quite short songs that you could play on the radio for fuggin grandma if you wanted, and then you get the loooooong sprawls of those middle 3. Those middle 3 epics feel like the deepest, crunchiest, munchiest, dankest AC stretch of all time. Like it doesn't get better. Just think how much ground and vibes you cover b/w Genies, Magicians and Defeat. I mean those 3 alone probably could been an album on their own. But they're surrounded by all their favorite shiny balloon animal friends.

Excited for someone like r_o_s_s to listen to the album since he hasn’t even heard the live versions
—
6 listens in. Classic AC. SJ and Feels had great drum sound but this is by far the best drums on any AC album…makes sense with who was behind the boards. Can’t get enough of those drums…such a warm and wooly album, it will be so fun to hear on vinyl.
All the tracks have hit at least once… album ending with “this world is harder than it looks” is pretty stunning way to end it.

The Skiffs song that kept coming to me the most while listening to this was Passer-by, feel like it would have fit in very well with these songs. But if I'm being honest I just wish they would have saved all of them for these sessions, I think I'll never stop being haunted by the idea of an Elevado produced Cherokee that will never be.

wait wait wait wait. Um. Why did I think Broke Zodiac was track 2. Um. that's vaguely annoying. Ignore one of my posts on like page 222 or something. Hmmmmm. Ok weird. Fuck iTunes. Or like multiple, I mean I was just talking again about thinking the 3 long songs all went together lol Jesus.
Nah this honestly makes more sense.

I know we’re all hardcore fans here, but wouldn’t it be more respectful to listen on release day and not from a freebird?

I'm realizing TS and IIN? have a pretty similar dynamic to Feels and SJ. Skiffs and Feels are very cohesive but also leave a lot of breathing room in their more atmospheric passages, and IIN? and SJ are more "miscellaneous" and raw. The sequence of Magicians/Defeat/Gem even reminds me of the sequence of FRG/Fireworks/#1 a little bit. Two behemoths and a curveball.

Magicians is the new Fireworks in terms of emotional depth and purity and perfection.
And yeah Feels ; Time Skiffs :: SJ ; IIN is a cool way to think about, even if only in that Skiffs is a little smeary-er-ily produced than this which is so fuckin bold and "raw"/live-ish or something maybe.. It takes the boldness and high-mixed vocals that Skiffs hinted at but sometimes dodges, and pushes it all up front

Magicians back half is like. Idk going camping or something and then there's a Fourth of July fireworks show or just a shindig out in the woods and its a party and you're a kid and like. maybe even for a second you wanted to go home (first half) but then you're like no yeah ok this is fine, they're playing ZZ Top over the camp's PA system, I guess cub scouts isn't THAT bad.
Also the very end still reminds me of Vampire Weekend in a way but not in a lame where its like, o they're ripping off an inferior band, but just like, captures something beautiful that Ive heard VW do but in a fully AC way

I'm flattered by your estimation of how much will power you think we have lol. It was over the second someone posted "it's out there"
Anybody think this album works a lot better on speakers than on headphones?

Polarbear, I think listening to a freebird or not only matters when it's not full quality honestly... I mean we can call still stream this a bunch on day 1 on mute while playing higher quality versions or the vinyls/cd we all bought if it counts to the label, but yeah I mean I bought this, and I spent literal hundreds on the band last year seeing them live.
I just love having long AC songs. I feel like, yknow... past 17 years or so it's like. An official record comes out and it's like, whelp. That's nice and all but Where the Long Songs? Is this It? (the strokes). And whereas with IIN it's like, yeah Isn't it Now time for Longer Songs? And the answer is finally finally yes after so long. But also 3 of their shortest songs ever

Oh for sure, the way Avey's voice sounds so wide in the mix is amazing. Really it's such an exceptionally produced album that I think it sounds great either way, I think mainly I've just found that the second half of Magicians hits a lot harder on speakers.

Yea I don't even wanna think about the amount of money I've spent alone on the shows that got cornpilled (the worst part is at this point i've had plans to see anco fall through more than i've actually seen them :/, most of them nonrefunded as well. fuck pitchfork festival to hell )
And like, we've devoted hours of our lives to this band. If you are someone who has a registered account on a website made for a single band then I think that it's okay to listen to freebirds

Kings walk is an amazing closer
there's a little guitar strum or some noise at the end and it's like the perfect way to close the album. This one feels more than any anco album like you're in the room with them

I can't find it on mu or soul seek, would really appreciate a PM! I've been waiting to hear some of these songs since I saw them at Desert Daze in 2019 and I preordered the vinyl.
Update: Got it, thanks!

okay, i like king's walk, i do. but they could've moved defeat to its spot on the album, and move it to the b-side of the defeat 12" instead of the challenge, and i wouldn't have minded

For anyone listening to the freebird, is the broke zodiac on the album the really pretty ballad version they played live 2022 or is it the weird glitchy version where they fuck with the synth melody thats on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDAxXKA7d9Y

the former. Pretty much all the songs are very faithful to how they sounded on the 2022 tour.
