yesiree

2xLP -- don't know how long the album is -- not even a single shared yet... guessing there's more than a few surprises in sound or features

L'Rain doesn't come out until October (still exciting news tho!)

There will also be some essential music from Equipment Point Ankh (aoty), Darius Jones, and JOBS on sept 29. Very stacked day!

That edit is such a tease! It would have been so awesome if they'd stuck a live version of strung with everything on there. Still cool, though. Most exciting for me is that they're sitting on a whole bunch of nice sounding live recordings of the last tours. Hopefully we'll see a few Bandcamp live albums like the ones they dropped for PW.

The Challenge is super cool but I'm starving over here. Thought this wait would feel short but it has not lol. Keep thinking it's right around the corner only to realize there's over a month left. Just need more promo or something. I guess the next single will tide me over. Normally I am actually a fan of the whole concept of releasing singles and building up hype before an album and all that but in times like these where it's just a single and then a month of silence it makes me realize how pointless this is.

Today, been drivin round with the top down listening to:

- The still wonderful DJ Shadow - Endtroducing - from my youth, pure atmospheric drum programming genius, while I am far more aware of the seams and techniques now, it hasn't aged a day for me, it's remarkably alive and fresh and unsequenced.

- Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda - which I owe to our very own IkoOvo/treesandflowers couple of years back when I used Twitter, miss our chats and recs, buddy, this is the best of the best old school psychedelic Brazilian music, wistful and carefree and soulful and full of life.

- Etienne de Crecy - Super Discount - the best French house album ever, perhaps. I can still remember the day I bought it, my mate recommended after Daft Punk Essential Mix 97 turned my world upside down and I was dubious about the bright yellow cover but got home and listened to it back to back about twelve times that evening and night until it got light again and I had to go to school and I was in a euphoric daze. And that was me forever, French House til I die. It still feels like its own cool and carefree world, and even with the enormous influence it had (along with Motorbass - Pansoul by EdC and Philippe Zdar from Cassius) nothing else sounds quite like it. For years, this and Endtroducing were my favourite 'electronic' albums and twenty five years on, they're still just as glorious and life-affirming.

Stan I also have been listening to that DJ Shadow album quite a bit recently, though in my case I've been listening to it for the first time. Really amazing album, the "student and a teacher" beat drop on Building Steam gave me chills the first time I heard it. Beautiful snapshot of a particular moment in time in hip hop/sample based music.

Other recent listens that have been blowing me away and easing the wait for IIN?
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Technodelic
Judee Sill's first album
Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency!
The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention (which has also just led to me revisiting a bunch of Radiohead stuff for the first time in years. Has anybody ever talked about how good these guys are before?)

Great selections, I love those Jorge Ben and Tony Williams albums!

I remember back in the days of peak obsession, it was difficult to consider much else when a new album was looming. Wish we had something like the mixes that led up to the release of chz!

I feel you but at the same time my hype level is nowhere near where it was with Time Skiffs. 0 promo, 0 videos, 0 interviews so far. With time skiffs it was on my mind constantly, I couldn't stop playing the singles, etc... not the case here

The upside is I might actually have the willpower to skip the next single.

Damn I feel the opposite--I was not excited by Time Skiffs singles at all, and was expecting a bummer, but now....NOW it isn't it that I am expecting a good album, but a GREAT one. Based on song writing and production on the singles, I have not been more excited since CHz (which I was hyped on mostly because every AC release to that point was a great album). So excited I am not listening to other music until sept 29th...AC makes one lose one's mind

This reminds me of an exchange I had years ago with, er, someone by e-mail. I've removed identifying information even though I can't imagine this person would mind this out there. Need to give myself a good smack on the head for never making good on checking these out bc it's sure to be a treasure trove. Actually thought I had shared this already but can't seem to find a trace, better late than never

I took a look at the tracklisting of the soul jazz tropicalia comp. Some of the heavy hitters are on there but there is more. Plus you can expand beyond that label if you're interested in other adjacent Brazilian music that might not totally fit under that genre name. Here is a list of some of my faves (some repeats from what you already have been exposed to)

Os Mutantes (their first three are what got me into it all)
Rita Lee (singer from Mutantes. she has solo albums but I'm partial to a project she did called Cilibrinas Do Eden)
Caetano Veloso - i think he was heavy on the soul jazz comp so you've probably heard his stuff
Jorge Ben (I dig a lot of the 70's ones)
Milton Nascimento - Clube da Esquina
Nelson Angelo e Joyce (they both have their own discographies but the album they did together rules. Check the song Communhao)
Arthur Verocai (check the first self titled)
Hyldon - Na Rua, Na Chuva, Na Fazenda
Marconi Notaro - No Sub Reino Do Metazoarios
Marinho Castellar & Banda Disrritimia
Lula e Lailson - Satwa
Lula Cortes e Ze Ramalho - Paebiru
Gal Costa - Gal
Marcos Valle - Previsao Do Tempo
Alceu Valenca & Geraldo Azevedo

Those are some of the most played in my library. See how those do you.

great list but it’s wild to me that it’s missing my favorite brazilian/mpb albums (and one of my fave albums ever) — acabou chorare by novos baianos. just banger after banger after banger, an absolute perfect 10/10 album. one of my most played of the last few years. anyone who hasn’t heard this — doo so immediately!!

YES that Novos Baianos album is incredible, big favorite of mine as well. Will definitely be checking out some stuff from that list. I mentioned this in the music you've been listening to thread, but everyone here should check out the first track on Native Dancer, a collaborative album from Wayne Shorter and Milton Nascimento. Just beautiful.

It’s weird cause I’m 99% sure I’ll enjoy it more than TS. Just baffled by the single choices here and radio silence haha

Echoing sentiment of wanting more interviews, they're always so fun and I usually forget they're even a thing until they start coming out. Luckily the 2 recent PB ones were great so check them out if you're jonesing for that kinda thing

Tbh the wait is flying by for me, foxtrot's 5 song thread is helping a lot because I keep running out of time to write anything

And thanks for all the above recs, lots to check out!

it really is ashame the lack of promo IIN has. Probably one of the their best LPs in the last 10 years and it's almost as if theybare just tossing it out there just to move on from this Era already. Idk who's fault that is? Even the whole Defeat EP stil doesn't make a lot of sense to me? It almost would've been cooler to have released it after the LP and maybe a Live or different version of the song? I really hope things start heating up soon bc this LP deserves a ton of attention and not just from the indi music universe. and I get they like being low key but they deserve so much more attention and credit as these guys have continued to make new and fresh music over a 20 year span. There is a very very small list of artist that have achieved such thing. and yet still they are somehow unknown to so many people. it's like no offense to bands like King Gizzard or tame impala but AC Smokes them musically but yet more people know them than AC? fucking insane. Or even Arcade Fire before they went to shit. how the fuck were they selling out 20k plus a show while AC avg show is like 300? given theybare more poppy but im sure how they were advertised had a ton to do with it. and I get that most people have short attention spans and want that instant straight to the point kinda music. the very conventional song structures it just kills me that how unappreciated their work of art is and how relatively unknown they are while there's the likes of Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish and the worst Harry Styles. ... it's sickening. that's my rant and I'm sticking to it.

If they wanted to gain as wide an audience as possible, they could have done MPP2 then MPP3 and so on. They earned their opportunity to do that but it's not what drives them as musicians or as people. I really can't blame the audience for not taking to Honeycomb/Gotham or Today's Supernatural after BroSport, My Girls and Summertime Clothes, let alone Lying In The Grass. I did think Floridada might have done better but I think the moment had already gone. To the present day, as much as we buzz off Defeat, nobody is listening to that and with good reason.

Given how the subsequent fourteen years have gone from my perspective, I would not have begrudged them a more commercial approach as a band and I possibly would have preferred it, as long as they're kept the solo work as they have done.
