Same as all of us.

also, please tell me they are the two songs you would swap out from centipede, don't know why i need validation from you you beautiful scouse bastard but somehow you are the oracle of animal collective, the biggest fan who can wholesomely harbour the most hate for them

I agree that Applesauce and Amanita should make way for Crimson and Gotham, according to their original guiding concept for the album. I would extend the idea and say Father Time and Rosie Oh can both fuck off with them and make some bouncy weirdo pop EP and bring Honeycomb onto the album for a bit of extra desert junkyard.

The main problem with the album is they talked a lot about 'the concept' but they really had two distinct ideas that don't complement the other very well. Alien radio broadcast and desert rock are two very different creative touch points. They really wrote two good EPs worth, plus a few duds.

I shared this track list in the CHz thread and I reckon it captures the desert rock vibe reasonably well (all the live boot tracks included and all the new/studio ones removed):

Honeycomb
Today's Supernatural
Gotham
Mercury Man
New Town
Monkey Riches
Father Time
Wide Eyed
Rosie Oh
Crimson

i actually think the order they were played in in 2011 was perfect, if Rosie Oh was downgraded back to its earlier/more simplistic version and Wide Eyed got that drone intro back

Wide Eyed
Today's Supernatural
Father Time
New Town Burnout
Monkey Riches
Mercury Man
Gotham
Honeycomb
Rosie Oh
Crimson

still a shame Gotham and Honeycomb weren't on the album, those are two next best from that era

Your top three are all non-boot tracks. That’s crazy.

I think for me, having boots of Centipede tracks is more of a liability bc most of them ended up being a bit disappointing in comparison to how they sounded pre album release. I seriously loved most of the 2011 boots and was extremely excited for the album, but Applesauce is by far my favorite song on that release.

I reckon you might be. The only live song I’ve been more excited for in the last 10 years (than those two) is Defeat. And I think I’m probably with the majority on that.

New Town Burnout is my favorite, Applesauce and Today's Supernatural probably next up. I heard TS when I was in middle school after Doin it Right came out and I was like "I need more of this Panda Bear guy in my life. what else has he made?" and I looked up animal collective on YouTube and TS just came out and I was only 12 and it was honestly terrifying and it was definitely the 'weirdest' art I'd seen til that point. I did NOT know music had the right to sound like that and I was convinced it was just trying to hurt me. But that intrigue is what drew me to listen to MPP a few years later. So that song will always have a ridiculous soft spot for me because of that. I do also just love it. Pandas vocals go so hard at the end.

And yes I wish there were decent CHz boots. They really all sound like shit and it's the only era I haven't spent much time with because it's too low quality. And not in the way were it aids the experience in the slightest. So I honestly don't even know anything about CHz before it was recorded like I do the rest of their stuff... I've probably listened to over 2 dozen boots from each respective era but there's probably only 1 or 2 from CHz I've actually finished.

Magicians is the most excited I've ever been for a studio release so yeah you might be correctly using a DAE here

Ha I was listening to Broke when I posted this. Gem is great but I feel like they botched it a bit in studio. Hard to pick out specifics without listening but it feels like what happened to Car Keys. Broke leveled up to me and I think he gets close with it but time will be the true test.

I think the CHz CD, if you put it in a DVD player actually has some hidden stuff iirc. There's a live version of Taste in Prospect Park from 2011 that absolutely rips and sounds dubby. Is this the one you're referring to? I swear there was a good quality one on CHz. Can't remember if the deluxe version had a DVD or if I put the CD in a DVD player and found the hidden menu stuff...

That's dub Taste (i.e the version they played on the 2011 tour) but yeah there are no great quality versions that I'm aware of. Even the Pitchfork show was muddy af.

totally agree, though i still love it a lot. i'll be completely honest when i am smoking to a boot and we tigers comes sometimes it gets to be too much for me and i think that's kinda of tainted my perspective on it a bit.

I know for a fact there was a version on the CHz deluxe CD/DVD or whatever it may have come with. Really wish more people knew about that hidden feature. I remember finding and uploading this after finding the hidden content. It's a sound collage from the CHz era with Danny Perez's visuals.

If I'm remembering correctly there was a soundboard recorded version of Taste from that exact show. Really wish I could find it but I don't even have the CD/DVD any longer.

To access on the DVD, go to the live Brooklyn Prospect Park shows, go to play all, but instead of pressing OK press the left button. Boom.

hey so I tested it out, and all I could find was the chz samples/visuals collage linked above, so you might be falsely remembering a live recording of taste? It's a shame, the four tracks on here are easily the best documents of the chz live era, it would be great to have more from that show in this quality.

hello stan, sorry i missed that you asked me this question, my username is actually from some proper army lad at my school who was called corrie and for some reason when i made my account a decade ago his name was in my head, nowt to do with gail or the rest at all...

speaking of these more rock-ish songs, magicians is right in there now with that sound and tbh it's maybe my favourite mode of the band really, can't agree on father time i really love that one although i still hear the live pre album version in my head when i listen to it, the 'A LONG TIME AGO' really hit different live, and tbh mercury man was my favourite in the lead up to the album but ended up being kinda middle of the road for me, NTB was the real star of this album.. i agree with you that amanita is a bit coldplay though, too obvious although on first listen i was elated to be fair

Hi everyone, loving the board and the new album x
OK, deep breath...
Sung Tongs is when they started to get good
Down There doesn't do much for me
Neither does Slasher Flicks
Bees is one of their top 5 songs
So is Also Frightened
Water Curses is the best EP
Eucalyptus is Avey's best solo record
Brothersport is the worst song on Merriweather
Summertime Clothes is also overrated
Painting With is ace, especially Lying In The Grass
Tangerine Reef is not very good
That Bridge To Quiet video is the band's crowning moment of self-actualisation
Royal & Desire is a bit corny
Defeat is too short
