haha you're right. i think it's some kind of wires crossed from inner monologue -> sabbath -> black sabbath -> metal -> master of puppets i think??? but yeah i got all the other buoys songs mixed up too

[Also just have to note that I think Master is just perfect songwriting. It took me a while to fall in love with it (I’d preferred I Know I Don’t Know for a long while), but a revisit made me realize how patient and evocative it is. To me it’s a song about your life flashing before your eyes at old age, and all the advice you wish you could give your younger self.
YES love me some Master. Was always my fav track off Buoys but there's just something so special to me about the "mmmmto the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeend" part of Dolphin that changed my mind over time.
Hell yes Master gang rise up
Dolphin is one of the more unique productions in the AnCo pantheon, so I’m willing to concede that it deserves a spot up there
It kind of annoys me that they forgot to turn off the faucet all the way while recording dolphin, and so if you listen closely you can hear a "drip, drip" noise thru the whole track. How come they didn't catch that! Imo studios shouldn't even HAVE sinks in the recording area

"'Daily Routine' starts with this little arpeggiated synth thing and the sound of a water drop. The guys had this really specific idea about what they wanted to do and so we cut up the [Juno] arpeggiation into individual notes and just put a mic up and recorded Dave making water drops happen in the sink. Then we cut those into individual samples and I went into Logic and wrote a tempo map that just accelerated over the course of 30 to 60 seconds. So the song starts and you hear one little note of the arpeggiation and one little water drop and they slowly speed up until it goes into the song.”
Has anyone here ever listened to In the Land of Grey and Pink by Caravan? I have no understanding of its popularity (or lack thereof) but feel like some of the classic psych heads/deadheads may know. Anyway the title track has this recurring moment (first one at 2:50) where there's a mixture of what sounds like someone really quickly picking a low guitar string and the singer quickly flicking his lips with his fingers. That shit is what the vocal drone at the end of SC has always reminded me of.
Bonus: if you haven't heard it and like that old psych/Dead shit you should listen to that same band's 23 min epic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sls_QCMG2Y - you can see where MGMT's Siberian Breaks came from.
Good suggestion here, feels like the Canterbury scene stuff is a good reference point for this era
Wait so were IIN songs written and/or recorded before TS was made?
I’m outta da loop
Would someone bring me up to speed on the chronology ?
So basically all the songs were written around the same time from 2018-2019, except for Soul Capturer which I think was a later addition. Time Skiffs was just the batch that they felt they could record remotely to a click track, and INN contains the rest of the songs that they saved to record live in a studio in December 2021 once COVID restrictions had eased a bit.
I can't believe how good soul capturer is....I'm blown away every time I listen. it's the fucking best. it's like on the level of leaf house or derek. instant all-time classic AC. that outro is so freaky. it's so catchy. and it sounds incredible, this bodes so well for the album. prob my favorite animal collective song since uhhhh the jimmy mack cover
If we're talking studio gems, that's kind of tough since there aren't many imo.
Part of the Math, but I prefer the vinyl mix and that's just over five years now.
Uncle Donut for sure.
Maybe Cherokee? Idk if I can say anything from Skiffs is a gem. I like Hair Cutter but does that count as a studio recording?
I like Strung pretty dang good. I think the stop-and-start shouty chorus towards end tho is something that ages as you hear it more. Like it's a song you can over-play. Because of how epic and heart-on-sleevy the vibes of the ending are. Slaps ass live tho.
Cherokee climax is mayyyybe similar but idk I haven't really gotten sick of that one.
I think avey had great songs on Skiffs like those and 2nd half of prester, pandas were slightly mid (in a fine way imo, I like walker pretty good) and I think Stride >> Royal.
And then like aveys songs on IIN are also just strait up undeniably more epic and maybe "better" than his skiffs songs even tho dragon, wgb, passer and esp Cherokee and SWE are great. They just aren't quite Magicians or def not Defeat tier. Aren't even trying to be maybe. Hell, might not even be SC level. Also I stopped listening to SC like a good boy
TBF, homies came out 5 and a half years ago (Jan 2018 on vinyl). Digital was within 5 years.
If the rule is 5 years from skiffs back (most recent full band release excluding IIN), you could get Eucalyptus in there, but then I guess 7s doesn’t fit into the rule. Highly under rated is playing the long game, has some great low end.

I had it on repeat last night and I agree. I went from not really caring about this album to being excited for it to drop.

So ya my idea is IIN songs are just straight better for all three songwriters. Barring whatever your 3-4 fave skiffs songs, all three seemed to mostly save their best for this one. For Dave it's obvious that Defeat and Magicians and defeat and half of Genies is more lit. Than maybe his peaks on skiffs like Cherokee. And then Genies, Broke and Genies seems >>>>> walker/car keys. To me. And also objectively.
Maybe the real question is the song that is BOTH avey + panda written like Prester and Genies. Like which one do you prefer. Prester clearly strong as hell but Genies is just fuggin huge.
So ya I proved IIN has to be better than even Skiffs even if you like skiffs. Scientifically. Boom. IIN is a strong 11 and skiffs is a light light 9. They'd have to make some seriously bad changes and choices for IIN not to triumph.
Also a lot of people seemed to love Royal a whole lot where for me it's just a good cool closer but isn't Stride tier. Anyway. Ya. Perfect album coming.

Yeah - it's just the length of the second half that gets to me. . . . Cherokee could go on forever and I wouldn't mind. lol
For me it's Sunset, some of panda features like Passed Tense and Wow!, Cherokee, sorta SWE, Saturdays, HORS_, Our Little Chapter and about half of 7s.. Danger and End of the End or whatever that ones called. And I'm gonna listen to Crestone and Inspection ost more which might add to that
Sunset is a fave huh, I and cheyrou knew immediately it was special when vinyl dropped. Vinyl does maybe (sadly?) >>> Digital but that's fine. Big big great song, melody, lyrics And composition there
I remember spinning it in mere days after the music box show weekend on Nola, like literally for cheyrou on the night of night 2 cuz I missed the after-party show where geo did whipits in the marigny and he had been out of town in Houston and he was like wow what is this. I was like ikr damn. And then I loved playing it on acoustic guitar
