Very curious about Stride and Broke sounding different, a little worried but cautiously optimistic about Stride in particular. I'm sure they nailed it, but also I really love how it was sounding on the last tour! 2022 Broke I was less attached to, as long as the melody and basic song structure is the same then I'm sure it will be great.

What's the point of keeping the ending transition if you're already cutting off the intro? Makes no sense. Just like it made no sense for them to release Prester John with that outro. Nobody wants to hear that every time. At least we have some kinda single edit this time... but Cmon Domino
Either way, this song is great. Love the tambourine and shaker, and all the little details that they nailed on Defeat as well that reward repeat listens

If you play the song on the radio its weird to start with an intro, people get antsy and turn to another station. But with the outro you can just start talking over it. You try and talk over an intro, songs gonna catch you by surprise, you'll talk over the main somg and other djs will make fun of you, especially if you sound audibly startled by the drum, which you will

Reminds me Geo put the Prester John outro/sux bier passage bit at the end of June's O'brien system. Hope it's somewhere on IIN
Also, "Isn't It Now?" is just tempting fate for a freebird looool

honestly both singles are already better than Prester, which for some reason people think is the best AC song since MPP (I think that honor goes to Royal). I didn't 'get' Prester when it was released, still not my fave, but so psyched that each of these tracks are just creme de la
Correction: I think Royal is the best song since Todays Supernatural

it is interesting to hear soul capturer sounding so bright and alive. It’s hard not to look back on time skiffs as actually quite a dark sounding record

Always kinda thought of Skiffs as a stormy record. Like the threat of a storm or light rain... But then also the middle stretch from SWE, walker and Cherokee are pretty bright. And we go back too.. idk but I think the long outros or intros on some still reinforce this dark stormy thing overall, esp the first three and closer
IIn seems like it'll have an even wider range of very sad or dark vibes mixed with super peppy vibes in the panda tracks, clubs and soul

Yes!! The entire second half is amazing.
I really want to pick apart every little detail but I'm desperately trying to hold off on any further listens.
RE: Skiffs v IIN vibes:
I see Skiffs as light rain falling on a lake. it's rainy where you are but the sun is bursting through in other areas nearby. You know that raining but still sunny kinda thing?
IIN so far feels much more like being among trees, in fall/autumn, at night.

I was literally gonna say skiffs is fox's wedding rain (rain when the sun's out still)
And ya maybe IIN is just dusky tree shade. (Magnolia shade)

finally had a chance to listen on great headphones and wow... didn't notice all those acoustic guitars throughout the whole thing. so lush.

its probably closer to the 'acoustic MBV' idea than Sung Tongs ever got!

My headphones listen revealed whatever the hell is going on the left channel starting around 2:15. Its cool as hell. This is what I love about this band. I can’t tell if it’s a heavily manipulated vocal, heavily manipulated guitar, sample, or something else entirely. And the first few times I listened I had no idea it existed. Similar moment happened when I finally noticed the very quiet string instrument (presumably violin???) tremolos that are basically throughout all of the last section of defeat, or the amazing panning effects in the build up to the climax of cherokee. And that’s not including the endless goodies i’ve heard buried in the mix of pretty much every song on MPP or Sung Tongs. Animal collective songs have this amazing habit of revealing more and more with every single listen if your ears are open enough.

it's a great song recorded great, 4.5/5
at some point leading up to the outro it begins to seem like the entire song was just a prelude to this cacophony of vocal drones and amorphous sampling that makes up the last minute

that's a huge part of what sold me on it. i wasn't a huge fan of the main song on the boots. that has since grown on me a lot too. but a big part of what initially sold me on the studio version was the whole opening track/prologue aspect of this song that seems to set the scene purely in order to envelope it in this thick psychedelic folk haze of bizarro vocals.

I think it could be an effects drenched hurdy-gurdy part. agree that its super cool and very hard to tell. a classic 'I wonder how they made THAT sound?' AC moment!
Fuck I loved listening to that again. Really struggling to limit myself. The fact that its the opening track is making it even harder. It's like peaking through the door but not being allowed in.

Someone just posted this on the chan:
“My phone appears to be downloading the full album on Apple Music. The unreleased tracks are greyed out but I could see Magicians taking longer to download than Broke Zodiac. Any chance they're accessible in my phone somewhere or are they behind 7 layers of Apple encryption?”
Any tech geniuses here know if accessing it is possible? Or am I just too excited?

For those who aren't big fans of Soul Capturer - did you enjoy Painting With as a whole?

i like but don't love soul capturer. i kinda dug the live versions and the studio versions is definitely a huge improvement but overall i don't think the song is for me. despite that, i genuinely enjoy listening to it because of how great it sounds and i think it'll be a nice tone setter for the record
as for painting with, the floridada single release was an incredible time for me haha. i listened hundreds of times when it dropped. same with the album tbh, and i definitely played those amazon snippets to death. i think a big part of that was the novelty of getting so many ac songs that hadnt even been played live. with this era i already know most of these songs and while the studio versions do offer a ton of little surprises etc. i think that the prolonged wait time has damaged my want to have soul cap or defeat on repeat. i definitely don't enjoy painting with like i did in 2016 but i still throw it on once or twice a year and have fun with it. golden gal is up there with my favorite avey songs too

Has anyone here ever listened to In the Land of Grey and Pink by Caravan? I have no understanding of its popularity (or lack thereof) but feel like some of the classic psych heads/deadheads may know. Anyway the title track has this recurring moment (first one at 2:50) where there's a mixture of what sounds like someone really quickly picking a low guitar string and the singer quickly flicking his lips with his fingers. That shit is what the vocal drone at the end of SC has always reminded me of.
Bonus: if you haven't heard it and like that old psych/Dead shit you should listen to that same band's 23 min epic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sls_QCMG2Y - you can see where MGMT's Siberian Breaks came from.

SC giving me No More Runnin' vibes, with the catchy drawn out vocals and the somewhat tribal-esque beat.

Barring ITT songs, what is the greatest ac song of the last 5 years? Bridge to Nowhere? A 7s or Reset track? Cherokee or prester??? Something else??
Sorry to derail again, but this is an exciting prompt.
If we’re talkin recorded and released…
Overall: 1) Cherokee; 2) Car Keys; 3) Thanksgiving (from The Inspection soundtrack)
Panda: 1) Master; 2) Danger; 3) Never Ending Game (Panda Bear Remix)
Avey: 1) Invisible Darlings; 2) HORS_; 3) Lips at Night
If we’re talkin unreleased or live versions…
Overall: 1) Broke Zodiac; 2) Cherokee; 3) live version of Car Keys
Panda: 1) live Madrid version of Danger; 2) Religious Bop from the same set; 3) Master
Avey: 1) live version of Invisible Darlings; 2) HORS_; 3) Lips at Night

Some interesting choices there howsoever.
First ever mention of a ‘The Inspection’ track among a list of AC favourites?!
Crazy that you’d pick that over all of the incredible songs they’ve released in the last 5 years.

I thought it was a really funny choice mainly but I do have a special appreciation for the closest thing to Hollindagain they’ve released in 20 years!
Also just have to note that I think Master is just perfect songwriting. It took me a while to fall in love with it (I’d preferred I Know I Don’t Know for a long while), but a revisit made me realize how patient and evocative it is. To me it’s a song about your life flashing before your eyes at old age, and all the advice you wish you could give your younger self.

YES love me some Master. Was always my fav track off Buoys but there's just something so special to me about the "mmmmto the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeend" part of Dolphin that changed my mind over time.

Another sort of off-topic comment... When I think about or listen to Painting With, it truly blows my mind that it's the same band. It's not that I don't like PW but... it just feels so bizarre compared to the rest of their discography. The same guys that made Golden Gal made Defeat just wigs me out.
sure but like you could say this about Danse and MPP. two different bands. and there's about the same amount of distance between Danse and MPP as there is between MPP and PW. and 1 year less between PW and Time Skiffs.

Exactly which is why it’s so incredible that the sinister grift live version stretched out every bar to twice as long
e: oops, i was thinking of inner monologue. master's not a good song :/
