I believe that was an interview tidbit from last year and it's not like we have the demo. The structure and instrumental vibe of it feels that way kinda tho

Car Keys is a weird one to me. I don't really love it but def don't dislike it either. It's a curio basically. I like the call and response at end for sure... And knowing it was a chz demo makes sense. Extended outro is maybe a slight whiff but I like outro as it is and maybe they wanted to focus on prester having a longer outro
I’ve been wanting to hear a CHz version of Car Keys ever since I found this out. I imagine it’d have more straightforward Today’s Supernatural drums but just a frenetic pace. Sounds fun
Expect nothing less from the restless boys to make this set of recordings so distinct in the studio. I know mixing and mastering took a while for this one and I’m glad they took their time

i wonder if that metallic sound/riff it's based around dates back to CHz, it sounds straight out of that era (specifically thinking of monkey riches) and now that i think about it doesn't really resemble anything else going on sonically on skiffs

always felt this connection, even before learning it was from that era

Yeh can definitely see the through line between Car Keys and CHz.
It reminds me of Rosie Oh in particular.

looked at the tracklisting of IIN again, realized that i think all the best songs are clumped together towards the beginning (genie's, broke, magicians, defeat) and got concerned that it's gonna feel like a real fall-off after defeat, then realized that soul capturer came out so good in studio that i probably shouldn't worry about gem and stride not receiving similar glowups

Also Gem and Stride are both kick arse official bangers

There is something interesting where they're not spreading out the epics (magicians, defeat and genies). But I think it's probably perfect, like they're giving us this emotionally varied come-dowm from Defeat. They build up to that quickly and then come down with tracks that are lighter (Gem) and also emotionally similar (stride, kings).
I think it's perfect and side D will probably surprise us with how varied and awesome it is

I’ve actually developed a pretty weird connection to it over the last 24 hours. My daughter broke her arm quite badly (has required a lot of hospital time and surgery over the last couple of days). I’ve been in the hospital a fair bit and walking past a lot of patients with various issues. Just listening to and thinking about SC a lot, lots of hospital time, lyrics that have that whole grim reaper ‘your time could come at any moment’ vibe etc. Some interesting associations emerging!

She’s all good thanks man. It was a bad break but broken bones aren’t life threatening or anything. She’s a pretty sad little egg atm though

I agree with what someone said earlier about Passer-By and PJ fitting better with these songs vibe-wise, whereas Broke and Gem (possibly SC and even Clubs, based on how it's being described) would do better on Skiffs BUT that would make this such a bleak and sludgy album. I think the lighter tunes lift it up and I honestly couldn't be happier with the set of tracks on here.
Purely from a songwriting perspective I personally feel this is without question the superior batch. If you swapped SC for PJ this would be all my favourite songs from the era (I enjoy Skiffs a lot and really like how most of the songs turned out but just talking about the actual songs here).

Agreed! I love Skiffs but there isn't too much there I'd wish to be on this LP-- it's almost like they purposefully picked the songs I like at least a lil more to put on ITT, like all the best avey, panda and Deak songs are on that while skiffs is solid as hell in its own right.
And blessing to your daughter's recovery Foxtrot!

Stride has been one of the tracks I've been looking forward to the most.
I think the only song i'm really not keen on hearing a studio version of is Kings Walk, but maybe that'll turn out great.
anyone concerned about the flow of the album because of Defeat, i think it helps to think of Defeat as not just one track, but multiple movements. think of it as the middle of Feels.
If you take the track lengths of Bees, Banshee Beat, and Daffy Duck, they're 20+mins.
Gem and I will hone it back in afterwards.

Really liking the lyrics to SC. After reading them I feel that the Soul Capturer he's talking about is either a smart phone, social media, or the internet. I def connect Avey's lyrics to that shitty soul suck feeling of falling into an insta-hole or youtube marathon.
"You need a hush, you need a push, you need some tush, it gets you high."
Apps capitalizing on our stimulus desires. I see this line as Avey describing a doom scroll.
"You are its rook, it writes your book and keeps you trying. Soul Capturer always leaves you dry." This sounds like trying to achieve something thru social media but really just being a promoted pawn (rook) that just provides data for the soul capturing developers whose only goal is to keep you using the app.
Like damn dude, spot-fucking-on, brilliant lyrics. Lyrically, this is Screens pt. 2 and I'm super psyched on it. Perhaps it'll motivate me to detox from the phone more.
On that note, THANK ALL OF YOU for this message board where all you guys write full sentences and take some time to express a coherent thought about music. I read almost all the posts and this format is a million times more potent and valuable than an IG page or Reddit where it's a quest to get a quick forgettable reaction. Many heart emojis in a row.

Cool cool man hell yeah. I saw the Soul capturerer as being capitol G god but maybe your thing is better
I mostly lately listen to lyrical female vocalists like Lana del Rey, Caroline Polacheck, billle Elish, Joanna newsom, etc so a band that hits me as hard as them is huge... usually not bands like that like them. I like shins, grizzly bear, gecs and some others almost as much but they're unique as hell. Idk I'm so stoked on SC and the premise of this lp that it really justifies my semi extreme fandom

I've been depressed my whole life, but in a cyclical kinda way where it comes and goes and my anticipation and hyperbrain just force it into becoming really negative-- the soul Capturer. I really like your interpretation too though, the distinct poetry styles of Avey and Panda is what pushes this band above a lot of other indie bands. They're both, like, Michael Stipe tier. But in such distinct ways. Anywho:
"Soul Capturer doesn’t need a reason
Soul Capturer nurtures you then bails
Your life is a ring around its finger, lets you linger
In the light, Soul Capturer, always on the rise"
Marks it in for me. It just comes outta no where, sends you down a spiral, and makes you rethink even your happiest moments. Was it really just a reprieve of those regular thoughts? Is my life just the glitters in the context of all of this heavy negativity? But the thing that just empowers music as advanced poetry... is how affirming the music is. It's like very clearly telling you that, no, the Soul Capturer doesn't have to destroy you, even if it does affect you. I mean Avey's out there making a beautiful ass song about it. Just really love this track. Definitely feels like Avey's Part of the Math lyrically. Hope I don't bum anyone out!!
"Ooh. Don't tempt me. I don't know what I'm gonna do in there"
Almost reads like... not "suicidal" but when you think about death with a bit too much fascination. But I just think this is such an affirming song for the reasons outlined-- feels like Avey is really pouring meaning out to those who need it. Pure bliss.
And Dio the best one is uhhh fucking uhhh Strung?

Just had a listen on the stereo, fucken muy bueno.
I love how urgent and full it sounds, much more of a ‘fuck you here we are’ ante uppage opener than the lowkey Dragon Slayer. Couple of folks have been really spot on with the comparisons too. Someone said it sounded like Feels going for a surf which is totally accurate. Another mentioned how much the last part reminded them of Torch of the Mystics, so fucking true. I adore how they can wear their influences on their sleeves like that and still make it completely their own. Was definitely taken aback at first with how they approached the vocals, especially the harmonies but I’ve come to appreciate it so much in a studio context. Goddamn they nailed this.
P.S. cheeky guiro absolutely fucking makes the mix, well done lads

4. Reset songs like End or Danger
5. Prester John
For me. And half or more of ITT seems better

Oh man that torch of the mystics comparison is so spot on… I feel like thag just unlocked something in my brain as far as understanding this track goes. Magicians is pretty SCG sounding too. It’s their Space Prophet Dogon

blast radio versions of these songs are sharper than ever. i just get lost in the "we should take a long ride" section of magicians, and gem & i with its subtle rhythms is such ear candy. this album cannot come soon enough

Yeah, the song I'm looking forward to the most is magicians, but my most anticipated moment of the whole era is listening to the chorus of studio gem & I for the first time.

6 listens to SC now and I’m thinking I should stop. That’s about how many I gave Defeat and I’ve restrained myself since. So excited but genuinely want to maintain the novelty, sanctity and beauty of that first listen.
