Is The Challenge anything we've heard??

yeah as an intro to SWE in august 2022. a few recordings out there, idk if anyone has a favorite but here's one https://archive.org/details/acollective ... llenge.mp3

2. Any albums to spin that sounds like soul capturer in particular? Everyone's saying grateful dead but that discography is so vast. Trooges and 50 hose are cool too but maybe something densier messier. White album? Sun city girls??

Very cool, sounds almost like it could be an intro to Cherokee in an alternate universe. Thanks for the link

I wonder how they're going to do SC live now (if they even tour with this setup again).

If they kept playing SC the way they always have fans who aren't familiar with the boots would be pretty disappointed, I think. The drum fills add so much life to the song. The only way I can imagine them being able to pull it off live while still having everyone at their respective instruments is to have Geo just play the fills as samples, but that'd be a little lame

Soul Capturer sooo cozy! More than anything, this has me hyped for the overall sound/texture/vibe of the album. I'm predicting it's going to be a lot more cohesive than TS and with better flow.

Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are widely considered the best studio dead.

One of my favourite AC anecdotes is Stevie Wonder's manager being like "absolutely fucking not, I won't even waste Stevie's time with this shit" when they asked to include the I Just Called To Say I Love You snippet on the studio version of TPB. I don't see the Silver Jews reps acting the same way but I also don't see AC going for it a second time. Stand to be corrected though (cough Willie cough).

Lyricss not showing up on here

no 'i wouldn't of shouldn't of walked in it carefully' or whatever at the end of the genie's lyrics? like that bit and hope it wasn't cut but not a big deal i guess

And definitely check out Aoxomoxoa. Not much of a dead head myself but that's a pretty great album. Very psychedelic, and one that I think Avey has singled out as a favorite before.

i don’t hear it as an accidental mess up but rather purposeful. he’s playing with and into the ouroboros that’s creating a whirlpool between its tail, he’s paddling to stay afloat…

Ah ok. Maybe the SWE just has a connection to this song for me in that it's the only Skiffs song with guitar.

And yeah Deaks got his own lil bass style different from avey. I mean aveys is usually mixed louder (or is in Skiffs and Defeat at least), but he must be playing like Doug yule or Cale cuz beyond avey sounding a lil lou reedish (a la the "so-and-so says" songs/lullaby style vu songs) I think the bass is supplying that early VU sound

re: ouroboros

i love that the ending vocals (“ooo don’t tempt me… ”) sink from being “outside” in the stereo field, getting submerged into a wall of sound toward the aural center, before rising again “inside” that center with delicate high frequencies. sublime, mytho-logical, ouroboric

Is the Soul Capturer the Chaos Jester of DMT trip fàme?

Avey sounding like an ecstatic mystic preacher is really great.

Also can there be an ep of another single b side and it's just og Passer by. I feel like passer by at least the first half, fits this woodsy vibe. And then they can give us the early version of the ending "you can read the bottle guy" in Fever Ray vocal filter that was all want

I can picture deakin doing his twirly guitar dance to this even tho I don't think he did really.

Remember when we thought it was Soul Capture. I mean he's def saying it that way but makes less sense. It totally could have been Soul Captor but maybe Card Captor Sakura would have sued them

Magicians is gonna be the day of single, calling it. Also SC gives me American Beauty vibes overall for the guy who asked. Gonna do a poetry analysis soon once I have the lyrics laid out eventually cuz I've always been struck by the lyrics of this one.

Im tryna think of what Skiffs songs will even fully fit with the ITT vibe and it's like... Sorta Passer by, Prester and Royal? And that's it? Something like We Go Back in particular seems to loudly not fit.

I mean someone has also pointed out that all these songs are kinda different..like each one is a different sub genre of AC vibes with this vague throughline of "medieval" but if we're honest like. Does it. Genies DEF has some kind of Zelda ocarina of time ocarina music energy. And the lyrics seems to circle back to this medieval vibe, or like evokes tarot and/or Jungian archetypes. Anyway not a critique. But yeah an album that's varied like this will def benefit from transitions like how Skiffs benefited from long intros/outros

^that would be weird but I'll mentally brace myself for it now.

I've been revisiting Grizzly Bears discog for first time in years this month and I feel like I could playlist into Grizz bear from skiffs/ITT songs in this weird way. And 7s. Reset less so

Thank god. I might be a lone voice in saying this but 99% of the time I don’t think the videos match the music and as such I’m left after watching them with the song stained in its imagery.

Yeh, I’ve never been a big fan of ACs videos. I find the cover art often reflects the music effectively but the videos rarely do.

if time skiffs or isn't it now do have their own coherent themes or vibes that separate them from each other, i don't think it's intentional. like, if isn't it now was the medieval psych album then it would have dragon slayer and prester john on it, and if time skiffs was the light hearted loungey album then it would have gem and i and broke zodiac on it

True but the cover art definitely gives the impression that they’ve deliberately leaned into the medieval Halloween renaissance thing for this one.

Maybe DS and PJ simply ended up on Skiffs because they were easier to record remotely. Their sound is definitely more loungey and syrupy than the IIN tracks as a consequence. Maybe that means Gem and Broke have been recorded with more of the medieval/live/psych renaissance fair thingo in mind and will come across a little different as a consequence?

yeah i definitely agree they have more similar ranges of themes. like with skiffs, I think IIN will have hints of that medieval vibe here and there but never be fully defined by it like the original performances were. if anything i could see this album being more proggy, but that makes sense knowing they considered this batch of songs to be more performative
