I think their homepage is bugged, i’m still seeing stuff from yesterday and if you go to the news section, there’s a bunch of stuff that would be on the front page rather than Jack Whites auction

Yeah it's there if you check the news page and scroll down a touch

that's pretty awesome, the ambient transitions such a huge part of the live show.

must have been very entertaining for willie to see so many of us predicting kings as opener and soul as closer knowing that it was the exact opposite

^true haha. Soul Capturer works really well as an opener I think

I'm loving it, so glad they kept the "rehhhhrrrrhehhehrhhrhhrrrrr" (non-Bees version) at the end

I'm hoping this album maintains their live transitions between songs. I know we say that every time but THIS time it feels RIGHT.

seems like a lot of love for SC today (which is great!) but it seemed like the board was lukewarm on the tune. did i miss something? haven't heard it yet, waiting for my proper cans listen after work.

first thing i did when i woke up was grab my phone and listen to this song while the morning light came in. utter perfection, even with my crappy apple earbuds. going to listen on some nice headphones in a bit so i can soak up the details

i knew soul cap had single potential but the band and russ and heba truly elevated this one. we'll have time to dissect every second of this song until the next single, so i'll leave it at that.

i'm so thrilled with today's announcement. it's such a relief to not only have the official confirmation out there in the world, but also to see all the pieces falling into place. track lengths are what we'd hoped for, soul capturer has an intro on the album (my heart literally leapt when i read that!), and presumably a transition into genie's.

most importantly, the exultant tone of the press release from domino is exactly what i wanted them to focus on. no mention of the pandemic or any suggestion that these songs were meant for anything other than this album. just their musical philosophy, their influences, the values that make them our favorite band. it sounds like the label knows they have not only a classic on their hands but a true culmination of many, many years of artistry hard work.

gonna relisten to SC again now and then hopefully try to abstain for a while (if only a few hours)
roopn wrote:
Imo happy the domino version is purple. These songs have felt deep dark ocean blue and shadowy purple to me since forever. The orange/green in the art is working for me too, but glad the purple vibe stuck somewhere

big agree here. i love the album art (especially on a textural level), and it captures some of the palette i associated with these songs, but i think the purple/orange contrast is beautiful (and perfectly halloween appropriate!). the green gatefold accent is really interesting, i wasn't expecting that but i'm pleasantly surprised. orange, purple, green -- i dig it

I had a dream last night that I went to an Avey concert but showed up late, and he stopped playing early because of weather so I didn't get to hear any music (I think my brain is reluctant to play music). But when I woke up I was granted my wish of Avey music!

one of those cases of a song truly coming alive in studio, along with there being some really well picked extra elements it just overall sounds so fantastically vivid

What's really exciting is that even though I love how Soul Cap turned out, I'm still anticipating it to be one of my least favs compared to the rest. This is going to be an insane album.

I know I’m late to the topic but on the subject of memories with spouses and animal collective. My wife can’t stand most animal collective records, but one time I forced her to listen to Tangerine Reef and we ended up having sex to Buxom. Apparently Tangerine Reef is the only AC record she enjoys lmfao

Tangerine seems like it might be the wider retail/indie exclusive option so maybe I’ll go with Domino for now and double dip if stores get copies in before the mart exclusive ships.

from a production standpoint this has to be the best the band has ever sounded. of course defeat sounded amazing, but that was *the* one they had to get right. now that soul capturer is out too, it's like a proof of concept: this whole album is going to sound extraordinary

i wonder what the album intro will sound like, how it will lead into the song. i doubt they would do this, but it would be fun if it opened with some studio chatter or warm-ups and noodles to reinforce the live-ness of the recording, the way documentaries will show their subjects getting mic'd up before an interview

Well, kind of. Genie’s Open was Sea of Light and Broke Zodiac was Strangers once. And defeat was once (a not suite) as well

It's perfect, something about the mix of vocal levels and lyrics and delivery makes me think I could play this around my family without them demanding I be burned at the stake. Like my boomer mom would probably be like oh is this a weirder Fleetwood Mac song.

Accessibility isn't even that important or anything but I do like how clearly these are being mixed. And a lot of the songs kind of lend themselves to that (high strong vocal harmonies, pretty catchy structures). I mean I still love TS but I guess that will be IITs murkier lil bro who is into shorter, shadier-lit songs (tho idk something like prester john or kiiinda walker is pretty close to this vibe. Cherokee. So nvrm they're all the same vibe lol)

Also cool that somehow no one really got close to tracklist prediction but I think there were multiple people saying things like "it wouldnt just be Isnt It Now? Would it? Or Defeat, nah

okay the one thing that is stressing me the fuck out about this single is what sounds like a freaking fire alarm buried in the mix towards the end of each verse has anyone else noticed this

lol i think i hear what you're talking about. to my ears it sounds like a harmonic or overtone -- either from the guitars, the hurdy-gurdy (?), or maybe those swirling geo sounds -- accentuated by the flanger effects

SC seems like an odd single choice, being such a sonic outlier
not totally in love with it, but it does sound great

so delicious on the ears, they more than nailed it. On the "SOUL..." bridge i love that they changed the beep to a weird squiggly one. bass goes crazy toward the end of the song too... soul capturer lures you in then genies gets the adventure going ! beyond stoked

Those little snare fills at the end of a few measures add so much! Kinda reminds me of the ones in the purple bottle. I wonder how they're going to do SC live now (if they even tour with this setup again).

Do we think they’ll tour with this setup again? I honestly really doubt it …. It would seem pretty contrary to their career of changing setups. I also feel like (at least noah but realistically) all of them would probably be bored with the setup by now lol

Is this country?

It's velvet underground meets grateful dead hybrid. East coast meets west coast meets Nashville

I think I will abuse this song somewhat but I'll stop listening to defeat (and already kind of had) until it's with whole album.

Wonder if Gem is next month and then what might release on day of. Stride, Broke or Clubs maybe

Great track, never heard AC sound so 60's before (not including tracks with samples). SC was one of my favorites from the live material, and it sounds waaayyy better recorded. The bass notes add really cool melodies to the verse parts and the outro has that AC magic where you're entering a new sonic landscape and it shouldn't fit with the rest of the song but does so well. This song feels like I found it searching for lesser known 60s psych records. The Troggs and 50 Foot Hose vibes. Beautifully recorded.
BoomCheese wrote:
Something about the song’s tempo and soundscape bleeds nostalgia for me.

Yes! I hear that, it has that classic deep heart beat tom/kick sound that so many great AC songs have (kids on holiday, grass, rev green, also frightened)
dio wrote:

Hahaha. This comment reminds me of that video of that old man who was hella feeling Leaf House, like it reminded him of acid trips.

Slicing off the intro is so perfect for this single-as-opener. Now we get to spin this, then when the album comes out we also get fresh juice from the first squeeze

Fresh Juice is a great way to phrase it!

Yeah there's some great lines in here

"Your life is a ring around it's finger/lets you linger/in the light" is such a great image. And I love how the last verse suddenly gets a bit darker before it hits the final section. Soul Capturer leads to your demise...

glad to see that Magicians and Genie's Open are still longer songs. i remember feeling kind of gutted that Car Keys was significantly shorter than some of the live boots. I enjoy the extended intro.

I think I understand why they chose SC as the opener--Avey here sounds almost like a preacher/barker trying to get people into his tent to see the rest of his show--like 'I know what has been ailing you and I am here to show you a new way....'

I think it will likely fit very well into the whole medieval chamber music carnival vibe these songs have, as they unfold after we have bought the ticket to the show.

So excite

It's funny... before the studio version, people were making comparisons to Velvet Underground with Soul Capturer and (as a big VU fan) I simply didn't see it.

But now, it's so clear to me. And I LOVE it.

Based upon the boots of Genie's Open, which all seem to sit around 8:10 in length (before the inserted cover jam versions), I'm reckoning the song will open from SC with that wooden ripply sound and into the arpeggio (i.e., no intro drums or bass), since the album version is 7:50.
