SC just begins so abruptly - the bass drum rhythm hits right out of the gate and the song's guitar line comes in immediately after, at least in the versions we've heard. If it's track one, I'll be curious to see if there is any lead up to those parts, which essentially remain in place the entire track.

honestly i think it'd be pretty sick if the album starts with just the kick drum and NOTHING ELSE for 8 beats, then have the guitar kick in...

I can picture it fading in. Would be sick

True, that'd be sick.
For whatever reason, that made me immediately think of the end of "Royal and Desire" and how it would be cool if the albums were played back to back to go from the ITF-like guitar arpeggio of R&D which fades out directly into the fade in of SC... nice transition between the two LPs

Just for the record I never really liked Safer. I agree that it doesn’t fit on SJ but could if they dialed it in as a song a little.
Thanks willie! I’m hoping for a Moonjock-like count-in with the bass drum before the guitars come in.

Can confirm. This was said when they used to post on CA forums. I hear Cobwebs so differently now because of this info. Always has been a favorite though.
Woah, thanks for completely twisting my view on SJ upside down. That is so weird, as WC is pretty much a perfect EP and I can't imagine it any other way. Derek as the third track would be incredibly weird there, but maybe that's because I'm so used to listening to it this way. That's also why I can't see safer at any other place than at the end of SJ, as that's what I've been listening to for over a decade now.
It's kinda awesome though if you go back and listen to Cuckoo Cuckoo with Cobwebs right after, it flows so nicely. I forget why they changed it, I think they said Cobwebs just didn't have as much impact as they had hoped when they recorded it.
It would've followed Derek if it made the album. Actually didn't come up until the AMA they did for Time Skiffs.

I know I (Brian) was really set on Cobwebs being the last song after Derek. I was really upset we never got it sounding up to par initially. Still not over it

Panda's guitar in the second half of "Soul Capturer" is quickly reaching "all time transcendent AC moment" for me, and this is a last-two-days development ... meaning i will suddenly have given myself massive demoitis a few days before it drops if he doesn't go Sterling Morrison on us for the studio version, but i trust that he will
but ya, had to listen to the Blast version to recall what muark what talking about (i only heard them say one word before the song started? is that what you're talking about?) and then ended up having my spirit leave my body and my heart melt into a puddle in the grass after falling heavily into Panda's daydream guitars that occur in the last half... oh boy help me

Yep, only a few words but a nice little nugget of charm. Makes it feel a bit more live which is what I’m hoping for from the album

First sung lyric of the album will be "Soul Capturer, now it is the season..."
Isn't it now? Now it is!

RIP PB opening track. Maybe next time buddy

It makes a lot of sense as an opener to me, very warm and welcoming. Feel like Broke Zodiac would be a good track 2 to get things going.

I feel like defeat is likely the closer. If willie said it wasn’t track 7 (or side c? Can’t remember), and there’s no way they would put in on side b right lol. Unless maybe there’s three songs after it… idk

Magician's from Baltimore by far. Could be one of the greatest Anco tracks ever made.
And what are you looking forward to most??

Real excited for Stride and Broke, though apparently they’re the most different so I’m a lil nervous

^yeah i hope that stride isn't too different. i love a good slow deak jam and I feel like the 2022 tour version was really fucking great. i've never been too hot on broke, i love the intro and the chorus but i don't love the verses

magicians for me. i’ve tried my best to listen to it sparingly because i really think it’s going to be special
i’m really eager to hear gem & i’s chorus in studio quality
now that we know soul is a single I’m curious to hear what they’ve done with it. since it’s newer and relatively skeletal there’s so much they could do with it

Broke, Magicians, then Gem and I, in that order. I need that “hearing angels” to hit like a ton of bricks

Willie said they did….prepare yourself….
---
most excited for:
-- 2nd and 3rd parts of Magicians
-- Chorus of "Gem and I"
-- whatever they did to juice up "Broke Zodiac"
-- Panda's guitar on "Soul Capturer"
"Magicians" is going to sound absolutely MASSIVE, I just know it... it goes so fuckin hard live, I really have faith since they recorded this one live to tape that it'll capture all that incredible energy AND sound impeccable

i've been under the assumption that the songs are gonna sound more or less the same as they did during the 2022 tour, considering they were all recorded in december of 21 and defeat came out sounding basically like a soundboard rip of a particularly clean live performance with some small extra studio touches. possible that the mixing job will make soul capturer come to life for you if you haven't dug the '22 live versions but i wouldn't expect it to have many additional sonic elements

magicians was the most mysterious one to me which is why i'm most excited about it, feel like they're gonna elucidate some things that the live versions were maybe hiding or didn't make obvious on casual listens
also think gem is gonna bang

Stride was best in its original form imo, featuring Harmonizing Woman who called cherokee the sneaky spy song.
I love what they did to R&D with the last album so I'm sure Deakin is gonna nail this one.
