Didn't know whether there was a better thread for this. I have a theory:
From what I know (from my vague memory of a conversation I had with Avey last December), the band is interested in creating an archive of the live recordings they have. Avey said they have multitracks since the CHz era, and I assume from 2 Nights and some other official recordings, that they have a smattering of recordings from their whole career. I think Avey mentioned to me that cost for creating/maintaining the database was a factor in why they hadn't done it yet.
As some of you might have seen, AC posted Live at 9:30 and Ballet Slippers to nugs.net, the platform they used to stream ODDSAC. From what I know of nugs.net, other bands use it as a platform to release live recordings at varying qualities for varying price points. To get to the point, I think these two releases are a sign that they're (at the very least) testing out the idea of releasing their live sets on nugs.net, as it's a pre-existing platform where they can simply upload their recordings without having to maintain a database themselves. Thoughts?
Was JUST looking for a place to post the exact same theory. SPOT ON! I think the analytics of streams / purchases for those two releases for the next couple weeks will determine if and how much they will release on nugs.
They must have established a good working relationship with them having streamed their halloween special on nugs too. And coming off of releasing those 2 live shows on bandcamp, they must be trying out different release platforms.
Really hope this is happening but I'd expect something small scale. Maybe they'll follow the White Stripes pattern and release a new show monthly.
Maybe THIS is how they will release the music box material!
We also know Geo/the band went through all of the MPP shows and his transitions episode and the resulting live release wouldn't get in the way of releasing some of these complete shows.
The only deciding factor might be which shows to hold off on and do special releases with. And just how to release an archive little by little too, factoring in mastering/remastering, etc.
Extremely exciting times! I'm just hoping they don't charge too much for each show. I know they can't do the pay-what-you-want thing for every show like they did for the Bandcamp ones, but I wouldn't pay more than $5 a show unless the quality was incredible and the setlist was perfect (i.e. a pristine recording of the 2005 Paradiso show).
