Geo posted this on the GvB takeover today, sounds to me like some of the vocals sampled in Stretching Songs

you guys, i like "tape player chants for winter" more than all of PW. ):
I actually really love that some of their best stuff (for me) falls into some strange lost gems category a la the unreleased avey solo tour stuff, glasslands..etc, amazing.

i'm sad that the unreleased avey tour stuff is so rough and difficult to hear/listen to. i've really tried recently, but it's hard to get too much out of it. it's nice, but it's hard to really want to go back to very often for me.

avey just told ethmin on the ama that he "probably will not record" the dt tour songs but might put a practice recording from before that tour on the site so thats pretty cool

yep: "I probably will never record those songs but I do have a practice session from right before the tour which I've thought about mastering and just putting up on the website. Eric is the man."
that practice session sounds sweet though!!
(great question Ethmin!!)

Just bought the Talk Talk single "Such a Shame" off of their It's My Life record and realized Avey copped the album art for his "Tape Player Chants for Winter" track on New Psycho Actives, Vol. 1! Groovy.

oh sick find. adding a garbage pail kid to another sleeve (and a candle) is a nice way of re-purposing that cover
i actually thought of this release for the first time in a while since the weather is finally changing. sick track. "let's hear it for winter"

Yeah this release is really something else. I like how it sorta feels like they made this without any regard for being able to recreate it live, like it was just something each of them recorded at home for fun and decided to release after the fact. I also love how Avey's side in particular feels like it's telling a story by stringing together all these little vignettes.
I've probably posted about this before but does anyone else have vivid imagery associated with Tape Player Chants for Winter? I imagine it as this cartoon character navigating through all these snowy scenes. The beginning is just him playing in the snow, but when it transitions to the third section I imagine the character tumbling into a snow bank and it's like a blizzard is starting up. Or like the part halfway through, I like to imagine he's going into a cave with a bunch of bats in it to escape the snow. The slow reggae section is like him plodding through the snow and getting stuck again, and the ending with Bobby's loop is sort of like the sun coming out and melting the snow
The whole thing has to be my favorite use of samples by Avey, it's so weird and funny and evocative. I love Geo's side a lot too, but Tape Player Chants never gets old for me

I'll be honest I enjoyed listening to this a couple times when it came out, but I wasn't really captivated by it

It's been a bit maddening that these all don't live in one place (soundcloud be damned). ACs essentially released an album over the course of the past decade but it's a pain in the ass to actually experience them together in one sitting. I may not have time to listen to it today myself but I've found a relatively simple way to assemble this as a continuous group of tunes.
Open Bug Mall first since it won't come up through search. Pause it, click the next up icon in the lower right-hand corner<turn off autoplay station<search for the prior song<click the 'more icon' and 'add to next up<etc. The next up feature will let you drag and drop the songs in the proper order
Tape Player Chants for Winter
Stretching Songs for Spring
Summer Blaze
Autumn Rites
Bug Mall
I think Summer Blaze and Autumn Rites in particular scratch the Defeat-itch!

Oh Stan I think you'd really dig Summer and Autumn. Return to primal form for the guys during a weird period of their work.

Nothing against 'em but Tape Player is more of a demo to me and Stretching Songs feels more like a Tickley Feather song than AC. Real strength of what follows is it's Avey and Geo together. Really deserves at least as much attention as Bridge to Quiet and Meeting of the Waters.
