The more I think about it, I feel like this has to be the closer. It's a weird and emotionally heavy way to end it, but I'm not sure it can really go any other way. The idea makes a lot more sense hearing the studio version.

I have to imagine that’s intentional to add some levity. This is the same song as “yup” and Avey’s quite silly delivery of “the spruce” after all

I thought the "yup" was entirely gone but I'm so grateful Avey threw it in at least once. This recording also somehow sounds even more "live" than Time Skiffs. So stoked for this album. I wonder how much will reveal itself in this song once it officially releases.

How good is this batch of songs compared to Time Skiffs? Like, is there a chance this album will suffer without any of those songs on it or will it be better without them?

i won't lie and tell you there aren't a number of songs on time skiffs i really wish could have been on this record instead. but that's to be expected i think; they had relatively little choice when it came to what songs would go on which album. what i will say is that the best songs on this album are better than the best songs on skiffs, and the worst songs on this one are also better than the worst songs on skiffs. but alsooooo i think this batch of songs feels like a bit more of a stylistic mish-mash than the skiffs ones did (they are ultimately the leftovers at the end of the day), and the decision to put them all on one record together seems to me like a bit of a "fuck it" decision, which is exciting and admirable, but i do wonder how it will all come off as an album. idk, you have a lot to look forward to basically lmao

actually to elaborate on that a bit, i think this batch of tracks faces a sort of inherent challenge, which is that it contains what feel like the three biggest, most important songs of this entire era, and then five others that don't seem to even come close in terms of scope and weight (except for maybe stride rite but eh i don't really think so). of course, i haven't heard the album, i don't know how these songs work together or how they'll come off in a studio setting, but i do think that if i were making this album i'd really wish i had a couple medium caliber tracks like cherokee or prester john at my disposal to bridge that gap

Word. It's gonna be hard not to wonder what could have been, but at least we're getting some dope recordings of their best songs.

Goddamn they nailed the first and third section. FINALLY MAGIC.
I knew i was never going to fully love the middle section because I was one of those people that couldn’t stop talking about the Music Box Village middle section—but having said that, they actually didn’t butcher it as much as I thought they would.
Still a pitty, because it should’ve been the best section of the three and now it’s the only part that isn’t top tier for me. Still the best song they’ve put out since FBK/ODDSAC by a mile. Could’ve reached Banshee Beat levels though.

I’ve only ever listened to the Music Box version once or twice and I was curious about it again after listening to the studio cut and while I completely understand why a lot of people prefer it (the instrumentation especially), I think the Defeat we got is better in almost every way. Every section received a significant improvement. The only thing I might miss is how baroque the lead up to the middle is but I like it as a smoother transition in the studio (the little ay-AYs! are so cute and infectious, a little bit of the old boys in that). Biggest improvement is the middle section melody and lyrics. Don’t quite underStan d the love for it.

Also what is the go with this? Didn't see an asnwer on previous pages. Did they just randomly send the single to people? Was it related to those who ordered Spirit? Will this single be released in stores?

I would love one too. Haven’t had any luck in a few other comments I’ve made asking for it. Thanks

This is the beautiful and redemptive saga of the Animal Collective condensed into one unforgettable suite, a song for holding fast even as the world spins ahead, ever faster.
Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Russell Elevado, the 22-minute epic is an unapologetic ode to perseverance and hope, to “staying grounded like the spruce” when the very land seems to shift beneath us. “Defeat” features guest musicians Samara Lubelski (violin), Leila Bordreuil (cello), and Ben Chapoteau-Katz (saxophone). The artwork is by Lauren Luloff, Backwards Question, 2023.

So trying to catch up here, got the email and it says its a 12" with a B side!
Cant find anything official that says its also going to be on the next album which I am reading a lot here. Looks like it's its own standalone thing with The Challenge(live) as a B side?

I was listening in my room digging it and as soon as I closed my eyes and felt like 30 seconds of the real emotion of the song I started crying lol
Extremely happy with the production and single art. I feel like I’ve always wanted or known AC would go with this Arizona Kokopelli vibe. Some serious crystal store coyote in the moonlight type shit here. Pure magic

Nah it's been confirmed to be on the album, both by Avey and CA user willie dustice who apparently has heard the album early.

There’s no reason why it wouldn’t be on the album really. It’s not like they’ve never released an album cut as a standalone single before. I have faith.

production couldn't be better. lots of little details i wasn't really getting on the rip. love the shimmery drums in the 3rd section during "just a frightened mother", cool geo flourishes during "isn't it now", the scratchy strings at the end, what a soundscape they made here. dense and sparse at the same time.

i definitely recognized samara lubelski's name (cello), i'm not sure i've heard any of her solo albums but she's on the living bridge + keep me smiling compilations. really made me happy to see that

Middle section is sooo fucking cool, better than any live version i remember. It sounds like fucking Rusted Root lol. It sounds like one of those oval braided rugs warmed by sunlight in your hippie aunts house, gimme a break. Skiffs was definitely a return to form but this song is a true return to Magic

Took a bath and listened to this with some coffee. Struck me as closest they've come to The Incredible String Band

I'm glad there's no video, and I hope it stays that way. This is a song to listen to with eyes closed, alone.

I was thinking this! It progresses in a way that feels very similar to some like A Very Cellular Song. Funny I never really made the connection with the boots.
