Yeah Golden Gal has easily some of the worst lyrics Avey has ever written, it's a testament to how great the melody and groove of the song is that I still consider it one of the stronger tracks on the album. Generally I'm not a big fan of Panda's songs on this album and kinda feels like Natural Selection and Summing could be cut, but I have a soft spot for Spilling Guts. That song just works, a quick little burst of energy with a super satisfying payoff melodically. I've been appreciating this album more overall as time goes on, may even prefer it to Skiffs in some ways. Burglers/On Delay/Recycling are forever on top.

Recycling is one of Panda's best songs. I stand firmly on the hill that it is easily one of their best closers. I do love summing too tho

golden gal is very 2016, just trying super hard to be understanding of the tons of issues women have to face in their lives due to the patriarchy and our shitty societal attitudes towards women, but missing the overall point pretty hard and there's just a lot that bums me out a little. C for effort
but i do really love this album. for a long time i didn't dig the middle as much, it starts so strong which i think i most agree with. but i've been loving Natural Selection recently, it has this super weird like late 70s techno pop vibe that feels great. love the way Panda sings it's basically a flight on the conchords melody/cover. lying in the grass is best when its sparse, it would be better sounding without the sax sample i think and just the weird vocals throughout.
i've always had a huge soft spot for Spilling Guts and Summing the Wretch, they just feel like these perfect tiny bursts of sound that are so huge in the moment and then they are gone. "Watch it watch you watching wretch" is also one of the GOAT panda lines. they feel like the album's best point towards its thesis of caveman future-rock.
honestly bagels is the only one that still annoys me. it's because the little chorus part is so catchy and pretty that the rest of the song doesn't feel like it earns it.
still a really fun listen on a pretty day. i live in the country now and my landlord makes me cut this giant fucking piece of land for a discount on my rent and i will use this to get me motivated in the early going

also agree that the burglars and on delay need to be 7 minutes long minimum

idk i get what you all are saying about golden gal but i feel like the lyrics are open to interpretation enough that people could choose to have a more charitable interpretation of its intention/message, even if some of the lyricism might be clunky, never really bothered me/let it detract from the song cause i'm sure there's nothing poorly intentioned in there

definitely i think the intentions are in the right place. but it does strike me as a bit infantilizing in certain lines, or at the very least, there are certain lines that feel weird or just a little goofy in the context of what its trying to say. it's nothing too horrible

yeah definitely agree, it's this weird thing where it has this naiveté that results in it simultaneously having a number of uncomfortable lines that miss the mark while also feeling wholesome in its earnestness lol

Yeah golden gal's lyrics are just too much. Shame cuz the song is wonderful and the melody is top notch. Amazing performances of it from the PW tour too, but it's sorta fitting that it's so sincere and kinda flat, considering most of Panda's best lyrical content is not up front in that regard and way more subtle. Also true on Bagels. I love the lyrics for that one and again the live versions really tune up the verses but the recorded verses just sorta fall flat to me. I think those might be my only true criticisms though, maybe sometimes I skip Lying in the Grass (even though lyrically it's one of my favorite PB songs).

The "some kind of tube she'd never seen" lyric in Golden Gal always reminds me of a particular Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode, where Bob Dole gets captured by a UFO and says "hey what the hell is this some kinda tube?". Wonder if it was intentional considering the other AC-Simpsons connections (Winters Love being featured in an episode + the boys sampling a Homer line in the live trance version of Bees)

Oh my god, that's a Homer sample? I thought it was Avey doing a weird voice haha. Anyone know what it says? I can't make it out.

i fucking love the melody on the bridge of golden gal. also the chorus on goalkeeper is a crazy one. i got mad thoughts about this album. but i think it came out a bit half baked. it needed a live drummer like jeremy provides on the tour to give the songs the oomph they deserve. when you listen to them live the performances are so ridiculously precise its like theyre flexing

Someone on here said it's from a clip of him saying "never fear, the cosmic fool is here." Pretty awesome rendition

Yeah I'm in the camp of Golden Gal lyrics are a bit off-putting but the melody and rhythm are superb, I love it anyway
