I'm finding Invisible Darlings and Sweeper's Grin to be the most immediate songs on here, and Cloud Stop Rest Start the hardest to love. I do like the general vibe of the album though, and I think it will probably grow on me with repeated listens.

I'm close to burnt out on Sweeper's Grin, everyone. It's my fault. I listened too it too much. It slaps hard when going for an afternoon run though. When the drums kick in I start running faster and it feels like all the people I'm running past are looking at me, impressed at my speed.

I still hate cloud stop rest start, probably my least favorite AC related song ever released. It’s not too abrasive or experimental it’s just lazy, any of us with any musical talent could’ve come up with that instrumental in 10 minutes drunk fucking around with a microkorg
However the rest of the album is starting to grow on me, especially neurons. Album was a 3/10 for me on launch and now I’d say it’s around a 5 or 6

Lol good question. Wastered definitely has a more creative atmosphere and sounds completely alien to the rest of the feels era so I think it has its place. I just wish they didn’t make it last 11 minutes for no reason but I mean you can just edit that out in an audio editor and bring it down to the length they would play it live at

I always loved how avey could take innocuous and simple instrumentals and build a hearty song out of them. we go back's bass line as an example

I was recently thinking how the synth loop in Cloud feels different depending on which melody is happening. When it comes in at the end for the "wind blows.." all the droning feels justified to me

So interesting to me how divisive Cloud Stop Rest Start has been. I’m so in love with that song and listened to it so much as this point that I’m starting to feel myself get sick of it. I don’t really know anything about the process of making music or music production, but I couldn’t really care less if an instrumental is “lazy” or super easy to make. It sounds incredible, that’s the important thing. Brings to mind recent discussions over Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood.

yeah, the ”lazy” argument is dumb and doesn’t make sense. there’s plenty of amazing music that required very little effort to create (Clint Eastwood is a good example). There’s plenty of shitty music that took a ton of effort to create. I get what dusty means in a general sense - I like when musicians are thoughtful and intentional about creating their songs, and that usually takes effort to do so. But ultimately the effort simply does not directly correlate with song quality.
Sometimes I hear a simple song and I think it would be better if it had X or Y, etc but sometimes you just gotta learn to appreciate the simplicity and what it offers. I found 7s to be kind of “simple” or poppy on first listen but the more I listen the more emotional depths are revealed. a song like Cloud Stop Rest Start might seem boring at first but I think it creates a powerful mood and emotion out of simple elements. you gotta let go of your preconceived notions about the music and just try and appreciate it for what it is…my two cents…

CSRS is second only to Sweeper's. What is happening to this fanbase

eh, if a song doesn't fundamentally feel particularly great or inspired it's totally natural to be bothered by perceived laziness. it can create the impression that the artist isn't all that invested in their art, or worse that they think it's far better than it is and they don't even have to try in order to make something great
feels similar/synonymous to arguments about simplicity. some simple music is like "damn i could've done that, but i never would've thought to, and it's genius" but sometimes it's "i could've done that and it would have fallen just as flat"

i suppose it's the distinction between "lazy" and "effortless." they seem like they should mean the same thing but the connotations are polar opposites, what makes a song one instead of the other is whether it's actually good or not

CSRS to my ears is breaking new ground. Haven't really heard an AC song like it. It's very interesting. I'd sooner call something like Invisible Darlings lazy as it sounds like a retread of Slasher Flicks (I do like it though and wouldn't actually call it lazy)
